EP# 277: Beyond Lotions and Potions: The Science of Beautiful Skin with Vanities By Jay Beauty & Aesthetics
What makes Jamisha Turner with Vanities By Jay Beauty & Aesthetics a good neighbor?
Ever wondered what truly separates exceptional skincare from empty promises? Master esthetician Jamisha Turner pulls back the curtain on the beauty industry with refreshing honesty and scientific expertise.
With a background in biology and chemistry from VCU, Jamisha brings a unique perspective to her work at Vanity by Jay Beauty and Aesthetics in Richmond, Virginia. Her journey from curious client to specialized practitioner offers valuable insights for anyone interested in skin transformation or considering a career in esthetics. As a self-described "corrective skincare esthetician," she focuses on delivering visible results rather than superficial experiences.
Jamisha specializes in treatments many estheticians don't offer, particularly DPN removal - addressing those mole-like lesions common in people of African and Asian descent. Through chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and other advanced techniques, she helps clients achieve lasting improvements rather than temporary fixes. But her most passionate message might surprise you: "Sunscreen is your most important product. You can throw everything else away if you're not using it." She explains how sun damage accelerates virtually all skin concerns, making protection non-negotiable.
What truly sets Jamisha apart is her partnership approach with clients. "You are 80% of the work, and what I do is 20%," she explains, dispelling the myth that professional treatments alone create perfect skin. This honest assessment extends to aspiring estheticians as well, as she cautions that building a clientele requires patience and persistence - contrary to what beauty schools often suggest.

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Susan Pascal.
Speaker 2:Well, hello everyone and welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. So I'm Skip Monty, I'm filling in for Susan today in the studio and I'm very excited to have a very interesting guest with us here in the studio. And I'm sure you'll be just as excited as I am to learn all about them and their business, because today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, ms Jamisha Turner, who is the owner operator of Vanity by Jay Beauty and Aesthetics.
Speaker 3:Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2:Well, we're thrilled to have you and, like I said, excited to learn all about you and your business. So, if you don't mind, why don't you kick us off by telling us what you do?
Speaker 3:So I am a master esthetician here at Vanities by Jay. I'm located on 7520 Brook Road here in Richmond, virginia, and I specialize in corrective skincare. In corrective skincare, my main niche is DPN removal, which is mold-like lesions that people mistake for molds, but it's really just texturized skin that sits on the surface. It's usually prevalent in people of African and Asian descent, so it looks like moles but it's not moles. And then I do other skincare services as well. As far as chemical peel, facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning and wet microdermabrasion. Those are some of the treatments that I offer, but my main treatment is the DPM removal and chemical peels.
Speaker 2:Very interesting. How did you get started in this business, Jamisha?
Speaker 3:So actually an esthetician of mine. I had been going to her for almost 20 years and I was always curious about it, so this was a career change for me. I graduated from VCU with my bachelor's degree in biology and a minor in chemistry and my path just didn't go the way I wanted it to be and I used to always go in there and ask her a bunch of questions and she was like she thought I would be a great esthetician. So I toured american spirit, fell in love with it, got my basic aesthetics and then I wanted to advance with more advanced treatments so I went back and got my masters and that's how I got in this field. So it was basically just a fellow esthetician referred me here, never thought I would be here, and then once I got here I kind of like totally fell in love with it that's awesome if you, if if you do what you love or love what you do, then you don't work a day.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it definitely doesn't feel like work awesome.
Speaker 2:Well, what are some myths or misconceptions in the esthetician industry?
Speaker 3:Misconception is you're going to you have to be patient in this field. With my experience, I think people go thinking that they're going to come out and have like a massive clientele and that's just not the reality. So school makes you think you're going to go and become this esthetician and just boom, you're going to just be booming and build your own business and making a whole lot of money, and that's just not the reality. So I feel like with this field it has to be something that you, if you're going in for the money, this is not the field for you yet Not saying that you won't get there. You just have to be patient. Like one week it might be amazing, the next week you might not touch a face at all, but that's just more so. If you're a small entrepreneur starting out as a solo esthetician, then definitely be patient with it. Like it's slow and steady and it grows, but it doesn't grow like you just think like, boom, I'm gonna be out of school and have 50 million one clients on my table. It's just not the reality. It hasn't been a reality for me. It hasn't been any reality for other estheticians that I've talked to. And then another misconception is that you are booked all the time. Like you got to kind of balance out your schedules, I guess for the seasons, because summer is slow just because everybody's on vacation, and then everybody kind of do their rebuilding in the wintertime. So it's a great feel.
Speaker 3:I love it, though, and another misconception is that you can get one facial and that you're one and done. That's on the client side. The other side was on an aesthetic side, but as the client side, it's like they are not willing to put in the work at home. So for me it's like I want you to realize you got to help me, help you. So, basically, you are 80% of the work and what I do in here is 20%. So if you're going to spend the money to come see me, you have to do your part at home. As far as making sure you are consistent with your skincare routine and definitely wear sunscreen, if you don't wear sunscreen, that is like a deal breaker for me, because it's no purpose in cleansing, treating, hydrating if you're not going to protect your skin. You can literally throw everything else away if you're not going to use sunscreen, because sunscreen is your most important product out of literally all of your products.
Speaker 2:Wow, wow, and that's that's interesting. So tanning beds are right out, yes.
Speaker 3:Tanning beds is a no. No, causing skin cancer over time and it's an accumulative effect. It's not something that you boom, you wake's an accumulative effect. It's not something that boom, you wake up and you have it. It's just something that you've just been doing over the years, damaging your skin to the point where your immune system can't keep up and you eventually develop cancer. So tanning beds, tanning all the time, with no sunscreen outside, is a no. For me, it's a no go. And if you don't use sunscreen, then I really don't prefer you as a client, because you're doing all the work to reverse all the work. Basically because there's no protection from the sun and majority of any type of skin imperfection that you have is accelerated from the sun. Any type of damage you're experiencing, it's coming from the sun.
Speaker 2:Wow. Well, I'm going to make sure and share this with my wife.
Speaker 3:Yeah, sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. I can't say it enough.
Speaker 2:Good to know, good to know. Well, outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:Outside of work. I am a mom's mom, so when I am not working I love spending time with my family. I have two boys and a girl. My oldest two are teenagers now, so I don't get to spend as much time with them because they are out doing their own thing. So it's mostly me, my daughter and my husband. For the most part, we try to spend as much family time as possible because I feel like work school during the week, so on the weekend it's a must. We have to do something as a family, so anything she wants to do basically.
Speaker 2:That's a good answer Time with family. Absolutely, and I've got five kids so I can relate. So If you could think of one thing you would like our listeners to remember about you and about your business, what would that be?
Speaker 3:One thing I would like people to know about my business is that I am passionate about what I do. It's not something that I do for profit, even though the money will come. It's something I love to do. My most enjoyable thing is to see like the smiles on my client's face or just them texting me saying like the skin looks amazing. I love transformation, so I'm not a lotions and potions. I am a corrective skincare esthetician, so I am a results driven esthetician and that's what sets me apart from the rest. I'm going to always give you what you need. I'm never going to force anything on you. I always try to have integrity within this business. I'm never going to recommend something just because I'm always going to recommend only what you need, and that's just me. I love having integrity. I love seeing results. I'm a result driven esthetician and that's what you're going to get out of me.
Speaker 2:Not, what'd you say? Potions and lotions and potions.
Speaker 3:Lotions and potions. I'm not a lotions and potions as a tissue. I'm not gonna bog you down with 50 million and one products. I'm only gonna give you what products I feel like is best for your skin type. I've done extra um curriculums within my career where I wanted to specialize in ingredients so I can know exactly what ingredients work for what skin type, and I feel like that's what sets me apart. I'm always in somebody's online course, a beacon of information. I feel like if I'm not learning, I'm not growing. So I try to stay with current um far as treatments and things, so that I can bring them things back to my clients um far as new treatments, new advances, new products, um, and I never stop learning, because if I stop learning, I'll be snagged it within what I can offer my clients. So that's what sets me apart. I'm always a student of the craft. I always learn more and whatever I learn I share.
Speaker 2:Awesome, very good thing to remember. Well, for those of us who are interested and like what they hear and would love to come see or maybe get a consultation, how can they learn more about you?
Speaker 3:So if anyone wants to book a consultation or wants to come see me, they can go on my website at vanitiesbyjcom. All one word Hit book. I also have a gallery on there where you can see before and after pictures. It's also a tab dedicated to dpn. If you're someone who have the more like lesions or just wants the literature and more information you can read upon um read up on that page. I also have some frequently asked question page for um other treatments that I offer. If you have any questions or want to know you know what those treatments are before booking, you can go up under the frequently asked questions and read about that too. I also do virtual consultations. If you just someone did just want a routine and don't want a facial, then you can also just click the one that says skincare products only consultation and you can look that for only 50 bucks.
Speaker 2:Awesome, very good, all right. Well, jamisha, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to spend some time with me and our listeners.
Speaker 3:And yes, absolutely.
Speaker 2:Well, we appreciate it and it's been fascinating, and wish you and your family and your clients all the best moving forward.
Speaker 3:Thank you so much. I want to say thank you for having me. This has been a great experience and I really appreciate the opportunity.
Speaker 2:Absolutely. Maybe we can have you back sometime.
Speaker 3:Absolutely All right, sounds good.
Speaker 2:Thanks so much. Thank you, all right Sounds good. Thanks so much.
Speaker 1:Thank you.
