Welcome And Podcast Purpose

Well, welcome to Moments of Worship. I'm Keith McMinn, worship pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, Virginia. This podcast seeks to encourage you in the worship of Almighty God each weekday. Back in May of my final year of college, I was able to study abroad in the UK. It was fantastic. It was such a rich learning experience, and one of the things I enjoyed was seeing the great historical sights. The final week of our time was spent in Ireland. If you've ever been to Ireland, but it is so beautiful. We toured a lot of the old castles, and they always seemed to have a certain patina, if you will, with moss on the stone facade. These old fortresses had such great strength as they kept things out and stood strong for many decades. One of my heroes of the faith of the Reformation is Martin Luther, as he was so courageous in standing up for the faith, the Word of God, he wrote the hymn A Mighty Fortress, and the first line of that hymn states, A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. In this context, a bulwark refers to a defensive wall or strong fortification, and the phrase never failing emphasizes that this defense is unfailing or reliable in every circumstance. We see here in this hymn that Luther sought to really illustrate God as a fortress and a bulwark, symbolizing his protection and strength against spiritual adversaries. And this imagery does reflect biblical themes of God's invincibility and steadfastness. The psalmist states in Psalm twenty four eight, Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Martin Lord Jones states this about God's invincibility. God is all powerful, God is almighty, no power in heaven, no power in hell, no power on earth, can frustrate him, can stop him, can defeat him. Amen. Love that quote. We read in Isaiah forty-five five I am the Lord, and there is no other besides me. There is no God. In Job forty-two, two, he says, I know that you can do all things, and that no power of yours can be thwarted. I love that scripture, and if you're around me a lot, you probably have heard me quote that. No purpose of his can be thwarted. We serve a sovereign, invincible God. The late theologian RC Sproull says this about God's sovereignty. God's sovereignty is his exercise of rule over his creation. Just as earthly kings rule over their kingdoms, so God rules over his creation. While earthly kings may be defeated or overthrown, no one can thwart God's reign or overturn his will. Praise be to God. We serve an invincible, glorious God. Today, friend, may we rest in his power, in his might, that he is a mighty fortress. Hear this word of benediction from first Chronicles twenty nine, eleven. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Well, friend, thank you so much for joining me today on Moments of Worship. I'm grateful for the opportunity. I would love to hear from you. Send me a text and click that button on your app or send me an email at Doxology at BBC Yorktown.org. I would love to hear from you. Well, today and until next time, may we worship our invincible God. Thanks for listening.
