SPEAKER_02

Hey, welcome to the Satchels Pizza Audio Tour. My name is Satchel. My name is Brian. And we are standing at the host station, which is a good place to start your audio tour. Hopefully you have headphones on. This is our this is our second um audio tour.

SPEAKER_00

It's the second edition.

SPEAKER_02

It's the second edition. Yeah. We did one at one time and it was good. It was great. People were loving it. Yeah, what even it's great. I was gonna say, you said good, and I was about to say, yeah. It was great. It was better than good. It was great. Yeah, but this one might not even be as good as that one, but we just try to change things up around here and give you another edition of the audio tour.

SPEAKER_00

It'll be fun to just uh you know do it again.

SPEAKER_02

Brian and I have a podcast actually. It's called Number One Podcast for People, the number, number sign, number one podcast for people available at uh whatever you get your podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, every place that has podcasts.

SPEAKER_02

And we have uh Alter Egos. I go by Gator. Yeah, I go by Sliceberg. He's Sliceberg, I'm Gator. And so we're gonna treat this as a little bit of a mini podcast episode. Um, if you want to hear the old uh audio tour, it's on our podcast feed. You can go back and look for audio tour, and it's still gonna be in our feed.

SPEAKER_00

It'll be there for posterity. Yes, for posterity for for all eternity.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And our podcast comes out every week. Um, we are always looking for new listeners. Since we are for people, we do like you to uh write in. But that's not what we're about here. What we're about here is Satchel's Pizza Audio Tour. You're standing at the host station. I want you to look at the building, and then over to your left, just take a few steps over that way to look around the left side of the building there, the west side left side of the building. We have some tables and we also have a little playground over there for kids. Um, and that playground was we built that the first year we opened in 2003. So it's uh and it's got a seesaw because it's hard to find a seesaw anymore. Yeah, you can't find a good seesaw nowadays. I was just thinking that. I love to watch watch people play on the seesaw. It's usually kids, but sometimes it's adults. Um and so we're gonna walk back now towards the van. And uh so as we as we go toward this van, this van I bought in the 90s, and it was actually I traded it for a pickup truck I had. My buddy had a uh a tangerine grove, and I had a um that's that uh thank you. My my buddy had a tangerine grove and I and I had a pickup truck, and he had this old van, but it needed some work. So he said, Hey, I need a truck. I said, I love this van, it's so cool. So we traded. Anyway, drove the van for a long time, and now it's a uh it's a 1965 Ford Falcon van. Nice. Uh Sliceberg and I are up here on a Monday, and it's a lot of traffic going by this time of day. Maybe it's like rush hour. Rush hour or something. So uh and anyway, we're gonna walk towards the we're gonna walk through the parking lot here by the um with the porch on our left and the stained glass windows. Right. You'll see the stained glass on your left. That's how you'll know you're in the right you're in the right place. Yeah. And um, I when I was uh I'm I've been married for 28 years. I got married in 1998.

SPEAKER_00

And wait, isn't today your wedding anniversary?

SPEAKER_02

It was it was a couple days ago. A couple days ago, yeah. Well, happy anniversary. But this is sp this, but if you're listening to this, it might have been a long time ago. Right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's just timeless like that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So we're but the but we're we're still we're gonna keep walking until we get to the trophies. So, and we're gonna we're gonna stop quickly at the trophies while I tell you about the stained glass. So when we had first got married, one of the things I said to my wife was I wanted to learn to do stained glass. And and what I meant was, which I guess I didn't say was like eventually when I retire, I want to do stained glass. You didn't mean like this very minute because she went and like got me a uh community ed uh class to make stained glass. Yeah, and I was like, I don't need I don't have time to do this now. But it was too late. Should we go? I learned to do it, and then I um I I kind of I didn't do it for at least uh a couple decade or two. And then a restaurant opened, I did all that stuff, and then eventually I got to that point where I was like, I have time now, and I decided to uh make the stained glass for that porch, which took a year and a half. Yeah. So now we're at the wall where there's a little um corkboard with uh events and stuff.

SPEAKER_00

This is one of my favorite uh I have a lot of things I like about satchels, but this this um bulletin board is one of my favorites. It looks like we need more pins right now. You know why I like it so much? Because it's it's analog, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. This is how we used to do it. Gen Xers like us, we used to do it like this, you know? Yeah. So it's it kind of has that nostalgia factor, you know. Yeah. Uh where you come in, you post your your flyer or whatever, you know. It's a physical piece of paper.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like it too. So we're gonna take a left, we're gonna, we're gonna, we're we're gonna take a left through this little alleyway or a little breezeway here, right?

SPEAKER_00

So if you're walking the uh the Coca-Cola machine, you'll see an old Coke machine. Walk towards the Coke Cach.

SPEAKER_02

You're gonna walk towards the Coke machine and uh we're gonna go through this little breezeway. You might even be a breeze. And then we're gonna stop here um in this area where there's air conditioning, so it's a little louder. There's uh walk-in compressor and things of that nature. Uh, my friend John Orth that I grew up with uh did most of this wall. I started it with a few little uh computer keyboard pieces right in the middle at eye level that say satchels, pizza, lightning salvage enterprises. Right. And then I he kind of took over after that, and he made this beautiful wall of it's like a collage uh sculpture. Like what do you call like mosaic?

SPEAKER_00

Like I feel like collage is like a is like 2D, but this is 3D, you know what I mean? It's like but it's mosaic, but in mosaics are usually 2D as well. Yeah, is there a portmanteau of mosaic and collage? Or there should be because this is what it is, like anyway.

SPEAKER_02

It's um it's that's pretty cool. And then, you know, these tiles, I'm making them at home. I have a little uh studio and I'm making tiles. I decided to try to make a face, and then we ended up making more faces, but for the most part, I just want it to be patterns, so I just like the patterns the best. Yeah, yeah. So then we're gonna walk towards this soda machine here, uh, which somebody gave me a long time ago. And uh speaking of nostalgia, yeah, and then to our left, you see the playground we talked about with the seesaw. Um great place for kids. Watch watch your kids. And then we're gonna take a right and we're gonna walk through this little uh the backside of Light and Salvage. Lightning and Salvage is our gift shop, live music venue, bar, toy store, yeah, experimental performance space or something, correct?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you call it that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so we're walking through this little um playground here. There's a place for kids to you know play drums with old pots and pans. Right. And we have um really great uh gardeners here, and they make beautiful, beautiful displays. Our gardens are always beautiful. And um the chalkboard here on your right, we're gonna keep going until we get to a door on our right. This is what we call the back door of Lightning Salvage, which is our gift shop. Gift shop, our live music menu. Toy store. It's it is it it's closed, it's locked because um we're closed, but but I had a key. Uh I I keep a key. So you come in the back door, and now you see our um this is uh open seating. So this is like you don't you're not seated by a hostess. If there's a table open, you just grab it. Yeah, and you know, we like people to share here. So if a long table, just sit down and meet somebody. Hey, what's up? Can I sit here? Yeah, rub elbows. I mean, literally rub elbows. If you look over to your right, you'll see restrooms over there. There's actually two restrooms. Um, you can grab a beer here, you can take it anywhere on the property. There's soda, you can buy a soda, we make our own sodas here, and there's there's puzzles and toys and games and home goods and all kinds of fun stuff. Like this is a great place for shopping. So now that you're here, we're gonna let we're gonna let you get a beer, look around, go to the bathroom, pause your um episode, your audio tour. Pause pause your audio tour, and then we'll tell you when to when then when you come back, meet us back at this back door and we'll keep going. So how's that sound? Sounds like do you need to reiterate anything?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, there's a stage there, right? Yeah, you see the stage, and depending on what time of day you're listening to this audio tour, there might be a lot of people.

SPEAKER_02

There might be a live there might be a band, there might be um open mic, there could be uh trivia trivia trivia, they do that once a month or twice a month? Twice a month. Twice a month, twice a month is trivia. Yeah. So anyway, enjoy this little gift shop, and we're gonna we're gonna go out the about we're gonna keep going out the back door where we started. Um, and and you just um come right back and you can pause and then okay. But you're not gonna pause it. No, I was thinking I was gonna pause it, and I'm like, wait, they're gonna pause it. Okay, ready? We're back. Welcome back, and we're back, and we're back. We just went out the back door. Yep. Um, lots of theater seating on your right, lots of seating. Right. So you're gonna take a right after you come out the back door. You come out, you take a right, and we're gonna go into to this greenhouse here straight ahead. So more outdoor seating, more places for kids to play. This area, uh, you you with your kid, you can you can play the the ground is lava, and you you drop them off on this orange climbing structure and let them go all the way to all the other structures and come back here without touching the ground. The ground, like ironically, does resemble lava. It's like you know, red mulch. Red mulch, right? So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, if I was you know three years old, I might actually think that was lava.

SPEAKER_02

We're gonna we're gonna walk into the greenhouse and um it it can it can be crowded in here, it's not where there's not a lot of space to walk. So we want you to walk all the way through the greenhouse to the next area into where you'll see four round tables. But um, you might it might take a minute because it does get crowded. Uh we have some we have two gardeners, they do a great job to keeping the plants look so beautiful. Look how good it all looks right now. They've gone through after the winter and they've just really tightened it up, you know. We ask that you don't touch and you know mess with them because people do break them and things do get lost and stolen. So we ask that you don't do any of that stuff.

SPEAKER_00

But this um this greenhouse wasn't always a greenhouse. I remember a long time ago. It was a bocce court. It was famously a bocce court. That's that's the uh trivia factoid about the greenhouse is that originally it was a bocce court.

SPEAKER_02

And actually, it started as a bocce court with a greenhouse over there, and then later the bocce court ibocee court moved. It was also over here. Oh, okay. On the on the on the back side, right, but then that was on the neighbor's property, and they didn't want us having it there. The neighbor came over and said, Hey, get that bocce court off our floor. Well, we did, but then we put a greenhouse on their property, and they're like, You have the greenhouse in there. I'm bad about that. They don't really use that property, so I thought I could use so you would think they would be thanking you. We're we're we're looking at all these four, these four round mosaic tables and benches, really beautiful. Yeah. Uh, this is a really nice area. I mean, in some ways, this is kind of my favorite place to sit in some corner. Well, I mean, I like this corner, I like the greenhouse, and I like the stained glass port. I like all the places, but this is like really a great place to hang out. Yeah, this is the this is the sweet spot. And this is still open seating back here. And so if you look over to your right, you can step over to your right a little bit, and there's a little party booth there, we call it. It looks like you're inside of a piano or what is like what it like the uh you know, the whale uh belly of a whale. Belly of a whale, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, whale ribs.

SPEAKER_02

Um a lot of the all of this wood was from an old um furniture, furniture place, right? It was uh Mallard's old Mallard's Upholstery. Upholstery.

SPEAKER_00

It was a fixture in East Gainesville.

SPEAKER_02

And they and they when they they went out of business, but they had all of these pieces of old chairs, and so I got all these pieces of old chairs to to make this around here. And uh I didn't even put a dent in how many they had. They had thousands and thousands of pieces of wood like that. Yeah, big time. So uh we this the glass you see on these round tables is scraps from the stained glass, and we have scraps, we end up using them when we can to make these um tables, and then we're gonna keep walking. We looked right, but we're gonna walk through the round tables. We're gonna walk over and take a right, and you should see stairs right in front of you.

SPEAKER_00

Where do those stairs lead?

SPEAKER_02

Those go to a little uh deck with an airplane up there. Um, you know, uh a little thing to for people to see, check out. You might we're not gonna go up there right now, but you should go up there on your leisure. And so there's a there's a deck and then there's a plane. You can get inside the plane, you go on the wing, especially the kids.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I've been in there, but usually it's but we don't want to discourage adults from it's you know, kids and adults, kids and kids of any age.

SPEAKER_02

When you get to the stairs, we want you to take a left and go and and go into this little alleyway next to this trailer on your left.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_02

This is my favorite part of the tour. Slice. I think it was my favorite part of the tour the last time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I clearly remember you saying that.

SPEAKER_02

I like that part because it's like, is this supposed are we supposed to be in here? Like, is there a legit? Like play like that was I I really like to create spaces that have secret, like little passageway passage. Like that one that we went through with the breezeway. Yeah, like I love that I we could have connected the buildings, but I wanted to have these little places where you can it makes them more fun, you know, like a little fort. We've got a sink here for kids to wash their hands or whatever. Sometimes there's soap, sometimes there's not. Sometimes there's paper towels, but kind of a garden sink, but you're welcome to use it. Um and and look at that. I'm I I'm stepping in to the right here, but you you don't have to. I'm just getting these pruners that somebody left here. One of those wonderful uh gardeners talking about. So we're gonna keep walking until we come out. You should get to on your left, you'll see the satch patch. And this is where we sell some plants and uh rehab plants and things. We don't have a lot of space, but we we try to keep a few plants going for because people like plants.

SPEAKER_01

That one looks like pot. I think it's called a pot leaf hibiscus. It says marsh hibiscus. It's a hibiscus, but it certainly is.

SPEAKER_02

It kind of has the looks kind of like a little bit like a pot leaf. I mean, I've only I've only seen it in the pictures. Right, you've never actually seen one in the real one, but I've but in the pictures. So we're gonna um and then we're gonna walk out towards the middle, um, which is uh where the fountain is. Right? We're gonna walk towards the fountain, but we want to be careful because there might be cars, there might be buses, there might be it's a very active parking lot.

SPEAKER_00

So make sure you're aware of your surroundings. Don't walk out into oncoming traffic. And uh once you know you're sure. Say first, once you're the coast is clear, then walk towards the fountain.

SPEAKER_02

Walk towards the fountain. Now we're at the fountain, and honestly, we should have turned it on so that you could hear the beautiful sounds of the fountain. Right, sure. But it's nice that they're hearing the beautiful sounds of our voices. So we it's probably better that we don't have the fountain drowning us out. Yeah. So we're at the fountain, and all I can say is that like we when we had this, when we we actually had to pave this back here, it was dirt, and we were paving it. The city said we want you to have like a little roundabout. Yeah. So that you know, people don't come in. They they're all going around and around. But um, it was already too late because I was already building the roundabout because I wanted a roundabout too. So I wanted a fountain, but I didn't know how to do a fountain. So I decided to just kind of pour in concrete and put junk in the concrete.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because we had a toy store and we were getting like we had broken toys and we'd find stuff, so I would just stick the my kid was five years old and we'd come up here and I'd mix concrete and we'd put toys in every week. And uh it was gonna be kind of like a sand castle.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But at the end, somebody brought me some wheels from an old um wheelchair, which we no longer use, but in this in this sense, I was like, oh, we'll put them on top and we'll run pipes up to them, right? Yeah, so it became a fountain, but it's not in in the in the traditional sense, I guess water would be coming up out of the fountain, correct? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

When I picture a fountain, that's yes, that is what it is.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, because it's fountaining or whatever. But this is the water is coming, starting at the top and going down and then recycling around. It's more like a shower. Oh, we call it the fountain of junk, but we should probably call it the shower. But way more technically accurate. So, yeah, we uh so anyway, the fountain is um a feature here, and then we're gonna look over at the back of the building, and you you should see a burrito brothers sign underneath it. You'll see night 1976 to 2017.

SPEAKER_00

What does that mean? Uh that means that Burrito Brothers was opened in 1976 and closed in 2017.

SPEAKER_02

Right here in Gainesville, Florida. It's very, very iconic, very popular restaurant. But obviously, when you look at the years they were open, it's a long time. Right, yeah. They had a good run. They had a good run there, and so people loved them. I mean, it was like the place. It's like that was the place. Iconic. They had the the guac light, all that. So we got their sign, and then underneath that in red, it's kind of hard to see from where we're at, but actually there's an it's it in red it says Leonardo's in cursive. Right, and there's some dates there. At 1973 to 2020, right? They they got three, six, they got six years on Burrito Brothers. Yeah. Six years extra, right? Right. And Leonardo's was the same thing. Downtown, cross from campus, iconic, rest of the bigger. Super iconic, yeah. I mean, there's still a Leonardo's in town, actually. Uh one of the one of them is called uh Leonardo's Leonardo's Millhopper. Yeah. So there were three actually in the day. But the original Leonardo's. Right. That was well, the original was actually 706. This was a slice by the slice, but they had the nice big sign, you know? Uh-huh. So we got the sign from that place. So anyway, the we're gonna walk towards uh, I don't know, what do you call that?

SPEAKER_00

Towards where you started the audio tour, towards the front.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just we're walking in the parking lot towards the front. We're gonna go, but but but we're also still being cognizant of the fact that we're in traffic, maybe.

SPEAKER_00

We're we're we're checking our surroundings, we're making sure that we're not um hindering the flow of traffic, etc.

SPEAKER_02

Right. And then as we and then on the right, you'll see I'm I'm making tiles at home, uh, in my kiln, and I'm and I'm trying to tile the whole side of this building. When you see this, it might be done. I'm still I I I you know, I'm I'm working on it. I'm working on it. I want to get if there it I want to get it finished and then I want to get lights on it.

SPEAKER_00

Was that this sign that says pizza here in red?

SPEAKER_02

So the the pizza sign was underneath Leonardo's. It said Leonard's pizza, and I put the pizza over here.

SPEAKER_00

It's the same color scheme.

SPEAKER_02

So it's made out of um, I want to say PVC or something. Like it's very durable. Yeah, it's very durable. So and if you look at the end of pizza, you'll see a um a pizza slice out of glass.

SPEAKER_00

I never noticed that. I I walk by this uh like many times a day, and I never once noticed that. That's so it's hidden. Yeah, I would say it's hidden because I've been walking to the dumpster like multiple times a day for the last five years and never once noticed it.

SPEAKER_02

It is a pepperoni, green pepper, and onion pizza. And it could have pineapple on it, I can't tell. That's true, because it's yellow. So we're gonna keep going and we're gonna head over here to the right um and get to the there's a sign, the round. Oh, we should stop here in the parking lot and look up. We do have this um this cool jaguar with the pizza in his in his belly uh that we found on the side of the road for sale, except we put the pizza in there. It's supposed to be a phone booth, actually. There was a payphone in there. I mean, it was it was made to be a payphone in Brazil or something. Yeah, I don't know why it never made it to its home. Well, because everyone has cell phones now. I mean, it made it to its home here. Let's just say it made it to its home here. This is its home. And so um, yeah, this is our gift shop, and uh and and this is called lightning and salvage. It's the same thing. Satchels, light and salvage. The difference is it's like we we're there's so much going on, we're trying to separate it a little bit, right? This is where we do the live music, this is where we have the toy store, this is where experimental, everything experimental is light and salvage, right? And then satchels is the restaurant property that's the restaurant, yeah. I mean, the way I like to think of it, Slice, is it's it's a live music venue, gift shop, toy store, experimental um art space with a pizza place attached.

SPEAKER_00

Right. That's the pizza is that's like secondary.

SPEAKER_02

It's secondary to the art. I mean, that's how I like to think of it. Yeah, yeah, totally. So we're gonna we're gonna walk over here to the uh on the left. If you look back behind you over on the left, there's that big oak tree, and hang from that tree are these really beautiful staghorn ferns that people have given us. Uh right now, we're looking at them, they don't look that great because we went through a really bad weather.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the winter, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I think that they're gonna be okay. Yeah, they'll bounce back. They're still really big and beautiful.

SPEAKER_00

They're gonna bounce back.

SPEAKER_02

And we're gonna go over here to the beginning, uh, to the beginning, to the front of the building where it says Bar Takeout Toys. This is the uh front door to Light and Salvage, and we're gonna leave you here and hope that uh that we didn't uh record too long. Let's see. We're trying to do 20 minutes. Yeah, that was 20 minutes on the dot. Boom, boom. All right, cool. Well, uh there's a lot more information. There's a lot of information on our website, satisfized.com. Uh, you can go there and find out more. And um what else? What else you got? I don't know. I guess I mean what else is. We've said it. You've already said it all, yeah. Yeah, and and oh, the podcast, uh number one, podcast for people. It's fun. Um, you know, we don't talk politics and we don't have ads. All we do is just get together and we talk about dumb stuff and then and then we release it. It's not for everybody. No, certainly not. But um, you know, uh it you know, whatever. It's we don't make any money on it. We actually spend money. We actually lose money on it.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you don't, hopefully. But it's a labor of love. It's not about the money, you know, it's about um yeah, it's just hanging out.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, a couple guys hanging out, having fun, and uh, and we and and you can come along for the ride if you want. Right. We've been doing it for a while. Uh anyway, thanks for joining our audio tour. And we um we uh yeah, that was the second edition. So yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, thank you. Thank you. Sasha's pizza. Woo!

SPEAKER_00

Get the don't forget the salad. Right, that's the best part. Yeah, that's the star of the show. The best part?

SPEAKER_02

I think I think that pan pizza is pretty good. That is pretty good. Wednesdays, you can get pan pizza by the slice. Right. At lunch.

SPEAKER_00

That's the special that's what's special about Wednesdays here. You know, we have grape soda in the front.

SPEAKER_02

It's not even on the menu. That's what's really special about that's the secret menu. We have the grape soda, and then we have we sell gluten free bagels by the I mean, we might not forever, so I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

We wouldn't that's the secret menu. You're not gonna see the gluten free bagels on the menu. You just gotta Know about that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You wouldn't see the grape soda either. That's true. I want grape soda. You gotta ask. All right. Uh slicer makes all our dough. I don't know if I said that. He's a dough guy. He comes in early every morning, makes beautiful dough. Uh huh. You got it down. I do got it down. Yeah. I've been doing it a long time. All right. I suspect it's spam callers calling me.
