Gator is on a long trip. He calls Slice but the sound quality is still not up to our usual well quality. What can you do? I'll tell you what. We can try to use Slicebergs iPhone to record the call next week. One thing about this podcast is that it's very grass roots. Cutting edge. We don't always give you the best but we give you what we got. We try. We don't give up easy. We bring the episodes even when it's difficult. Even when the sound isn't well quality. 

I've finally made it to my "Inn" where I'm staying for the next week, and I can hear every word of the stupid TV program that the room next door is watching. What can you do? Some nights you eat pizza. Some nights you get bbq. Some nights you get beans and rice with no onions. It's life.

Well, you know, I I I I get kind of mad when I hear people talking about the superiority of the iPhone, because I'm like, these phones are the same thing, man. The cameras are the same, they do the same stuff. Yeah, don't give me no bullshit about like, oh, the iPhone's so much better, but then then this recording feature, it is uh it they haven't figured it out yet or something, because when I called you and recorded, even on your Google Voice, it uh it wasn't any better. Yeah. Yeah. That's okay, because here we are now with the old old old way.

I was putting away the cucumber. I just uh I was making a salad for dinner when you called. So I just got salad? Well, no, it's like you know, regular salad but it's got cucumbers in it.

Okay. Yeah, I figured you might be at dinner time. What are you having for dinner?

Doing uh black beans and rice and plantains and salad, of course.

And you make your black beans without onions, famously, right?

Famously, you got that right. I put a shitload of garlic though to try that.

The garlic, the onions, the black beans, and and I uh honestly, if I have black beans and rice, I mean if I make a black beans and rice burrito, I sometimes I mean I just think it's at least as good, if not better, than like a a burrito with with with meat in it. I think it's probably better, yeah. But I can't imagine without onions because I love the onions. But we know that famously your your wife and uh the a person in her own right that does like the onion, doesn't do onions. It's not no she it it it it almost allergic to them in a way.

Yeah, well that's that's up for debate, but I think that's the best way to say it the way you just said it. It's like allerg almost allergic in a way.

Right, yeah. So it technically is now what an allergy is, so I probably shouldn't, you know, uh claim that she's not allergic, so I should probably just give that a rest.

We don't do onions. Sadly, sadly, we don't do onions, which is very disappointing for me, but you know, make sacrifices.

My wife is gluten-free, and I'm a pizza guy, and I love making bread and desserts. It's like, you know, you make today. We were trying to get lunch, and it's like, you know, we went to a Himalayan uh food truck. Ooh, fun. How often does that happen? It was all like little little uh noodles and uh I don't know everything had it was all wheat. Right, of course. So we left there. But you know, it's just like well you can eat here, but you know, it's like, oh, I'm gonna eat here and then I'm gonna sit with you somewhere else. It's like, let's just go somewhere else, you know?

Yeah, at that point you might as well.

Dumplings. They had the dumplings looked really good.

Oh, yeah, but I bet that's wheat flour.

Yeah, it's all wheat flour. Anyway, uh here's the thing, it happened to me twice in the last two days. Yesterday we were driving and we're driving and driving, and I just wanted to keep going because I'm like the closer we get, the less we do on the last day, and you know, it's no big deal. I'm just driving. Yeah, yeah, let's knock it out. But it got into a storm, like a really bad storm, where it was like pouring down raining, and there's a lot of traffic on the road. And I'm in a big truck, and Caroline was getting quite uh nervous. Right, understandably. So I pulled over for her sake to get some gas and take a little break. And then, you know, it led up, so we got back on the road. But I think she was ready at that point. She was ready to stop. And I realized that you know, I look at her and her eyes are closed, and she's just kind of breathing heavy. I'm like, all right, we gotta we gotta stop. Even though it's only four o'clock or whatever, we gotta pull it. She's not really into this. So the next exit I pull into, it says, it says, you know how they have the signs on the expressway that say lodging. Right. And it was lodging and had one place called like you know, Old Mountain Inn. And I thought, well that sounds charming, yeah. I like the sound of that. I mean, we don't always, you know, we I like that better actually than a holiday in uh extra or a best western plus or a Hilton, I mean studio like or uh my favorite Motel Six. Motel Six, which is where Kata stayed, actually. Nice. Uh she stayed, she was like that she was gonna stay at this one place. We were talking to her, she was on a different route, and um she was like, Well, we found this place, but it's a hundred and it's a hundred and eighty dollars a night, and then it's seventy-five dollars per pet, and she had two cats, you know? Not good, yeah. So now we're looking at over three hundred dollars, and I'm like, keep looking, keep looking. Like, that's too much. Like $150 is a lot, and that's not it, and that's just for your cats to stay there in a crate.

Right, yeah. That's uh that's expensive for a human, much less a cat.

Yeah. So she found a Motel 6 $70, no pet fee.

Yeah, that's yeah, that's why that's why a motel six is my spot.

Go in, lock the door, and hope for the best. I mean, don't get me wrong. I I want my daughter to be safe, but she said it was fine. Like I trust.

But um, anyway, so we we went to the old mountain inn and it's a cute little motel, old motel with like uh, I don't know, maybe a dozen little doors facing out and a little ground parking lot. You know the kind.

It's real pretty little Virginia spot. And uh I I pull in with my big truck and I'm I'm just kind of trying to decide. Like, is this gonna be okay? Like, what are we gonna do? And then this guy's standing out front, he walks up to me and he's like, You looking to stay here? I'm like, Well, maybe. And uh, and uh it turns out he's the owner. Okay, so he's standing out front. There's like one other car there, you know? Right, maybe two, maybe two cars. Yeah, he's standing out front waiting for somebody, and then my and then Caroline says, Well is there any place to eat around here? And he goes, Well, there used to be a little restaurant right here, but they closed in December. So now you got to go 15 minutes down to a Mexican restaurant.

And then I said, All right, we'll think about it. And then Caroline's like, We're not driving this thing 15 minutes down to a Mexican restaurant, you know?

So I'm like, all right, so we get back on the road. But I felt bad for the guy. He's out there, you know, trying to get his place. Same thing with the Himalayan place. So we go to the Himalayan truck, the woman's sitting out front, and she's basically like waiting for customers. And so then we, you know, we look at the menu, we talk about gluten-free, she doesn't know what we're talking about.

Yeah, it's like unheard of.

And so we're trying to talk about Caroline's quote unquote allergy or whatever food thing. But you know, again, we have to leave, and I just feel bad, you know. Like these people need business, but they they don't have food and they don't and the food they have isn't gluten-free. You know, if it if if they do have food, it's not gluten-free, and if they don't have food, we can't stay there. So it happens. Yeah, so uh yeah. So how you been? You you had a big trip. Did we we talked about this a little bit, I think, on the um when we talked last time.

Yeah, well, I I remember we talked, um yeah, we did talk about that. And I'm gonna play that.

I'm gonna go ahead and play that before I play this as an intro. That's gonna be the intro to this. This should be no, that needs to be the introduction. What we haven't talked about is the uh World Cup, uh World Cup Sports.

Oh yeah, yep. I didn't I missed the final game, so I'm not gonna be much use, but you can talk about it.

Yeah, we were like um Oh, you were traveling. We were traveling. We were we I think that's when we were it we were driving back down to Minneapolis.

It was Sunday night, yeah.

It was Sunday night, right? It was like the worst time. It was like that you know, the like the trip. Basically, like that we were in the car for like the whole duration of the game. It was just like bad timing.

Well, and it it didn't matter. It wasn't the most exciting game. It was zero to zero for most of the game.

No, I thought it was exciting though, because uh Spain scored that goal in extra time. That's super exciting.

In extra time. It was nil nil it was nil all. Nil all, there you go. It was nil all until extra time. Well, I can tell you a nil all game is not that exciting, and Spain had the ball most of the time.

Well, anyway, whatever. Uh you know, and when I go to social media, everybody's talking about it's rigged, and then I don't know if it's rigged, but they didn't let Argentina win. I don't think they had a chance. If there was more more goals, there might have been a chance, but but anyway, uh there's not much to talk about there really.

Yeah. Well, we um we're just we're not gonna think about or talk about soccer for four years now.

Well, and we are gonna start thinking about and talking about uh college football soon.

Yeah, because in August, which is right around the corner, August and uh well, September now before the game starts, but the very beginning of September. That's right. So we're gonna be talking about it probably all through August, like a team and who's who's who's quarterback and who you know. We maybe not.

No, no, just black beans and rice, and uh I got some plantains. I get the frozen plantains at Aldi and just pop those in the oven, yeah. I love a plantain.

We ended up when we didn't go to the Himalayan place, we went to a Jamaican place down the street. Uh-huh. Was it good? Best Jamaican food I've ever had.

Jerk chicken fell off the bone. Oh, spicy, nice and spicy. Collard greens, cabbage, plantains, beef patty. Oh yeah. It was just, it was uh just delicious. Uh, so good. Sounds great. Yeah. Yeah, I was very happy with that. So anyway, we we made so this morning, you know, I was like, well, let's get close to Roanoke. We'll pick up Silas, who's we're who's gonna help us unload in Roanoke at 2 30. And then we'll head an hour from there to uh Lexington, which is where we're going.

But we were close to Roanoke, so we said, well, why don't we go into Roanoke and hit um the Odyssey? Oh, cool. Does that mean anything to you?

So yeah, so we go to the movie, and we went to the movie at 10 o'clock, like a.m. Like who does that?

Well, there was two other people there, three other people, but uh but we've seen the Odyssey and uh it was great. I loved it. Yeah, and I it was it was more violent for me. I'm not into violence. There's a lot of violence.

Well, ancient Greece is a famously violent uh you know, place and time.

There was a lot of um previews about movies where people are getting shot in the face and jacked. You know, there was a lot of stuff that was a lot more violent, but also more uh up to date. Like just like you said, is like old violence sword and knives and spears. Right. But still quite violent. But um it was good, it was a little fantastical, a little interesting, and you know, I say if anybody's gonna go, I say go ahead and go and just make sure you don't drink a lot of water or beverages before you go and empty your platter before you go. Because the long interview for the last hour, I really had to go to the bathroom, but I didn't want to leave.

Well, yeah, you don't want to miss it, and it's not like you could tell them to deposit while you go, you know, they won't do that.

No, no. So yeah, we cut so we get out of the movie, and there's a message from Silas. He arrives, he had a layover, and he arrived at this layover, but the jet bridge wasn't working. So instead of they had an hour layover, but they were in the they were stuck in the plane for an hour, they wouldn't let him off. So he misses connecting flight.

That is such a bummer.

And he did last week he was traveling and he missed uh a flight and had to stay overnight. So he That is such a bummer.

That that almost happened to us, by the way, but that's a whole other story.

Well, almost isn't as bad as as really happening. You know what I mean?

Well, I did uh our flight did get delayed by eight hours, so that is basically it.

That's the same thing. He his was delayed about eight hours, too. So I mean nothing.

But at least at least ours wasn't overnight. It was like it was supposed to leave early in the morning, so instead of leaving at like eight a.m. it left at 4 p.m.

Well well, his isn't delayed overnight either, but it it he's gonna get here tonight. Okay. So anyway, it's it's just you know, it I don't even it it's not it's it's not that I care so much for the for the stuff that we're moving, it's just a bummer that he has to sit at the airport for so long. You know, like that's that is a bummer. And sit on a plane for so long when you're right there, all you gotta do is just let me get it, just give me some stairs. Let me I got a carry on. Let me go catch my flight, you know?

Yeah, yeah, right. I mean, and and of course they do every once in a while. Like, this has probably happened to you, like they do still have those stairs.

Yeah. Oh, they have them at Gainesville because we use them sometimes.

Right, exactly. Yeah, like it's just like you know, sometimes if you're on like a little plane, like like the ones that fly out of Gainesville, like I'm so I don't I I mean I feel like that's that's unacceptable because they probably have those stairs you're sitting around. They could have been there.

Yeah, bar over from Home Depot and roll them over there because they got them from the Home Depot to get stuff done.

Get a get a 20-foot ladder at Home Depot, and there you go.

Yeah, all it takes is one guy falling off the stairs and then they're basically buying them an airplane. Well, what else what else is going on? How's work?

Work is great. Work is just uh it's fantastic. I had a great day today, Thursday. Thursday's my busiest day, but um it was great. Like um I'm trying to think if anything noteworthy has happened. And I guess not. I guess it's just business as usual.

Well, we got to uh we got from Florida to Georgia. Georgia had some nice looking roads, it was nice. Then we go from Georgia to South Carolina, all of a sudden the roads got really bad. And it seems like kind of the like the ratchet of the Carolinas. Right. North Carolina seemed good, the roads were better, and it was pretty. And then when we crossed into Virginia, it was like from it was like when we passed the sign, Sliceberg. We passed the sign, and all of a sudden it's like rolling hills and fogs and mountains. So beautiful.

Virginia is is for nature lovers. So pretty. And I'm sitting outside now, and it's it's just nice. The weather's cool and nice, it's beautiful. So yeah, I'm excited for a little trip here with my daughter who's gonna arrive here in about 30 minutes. So with her friend. So that's why I had a second to call you. What was that?

Waiting for somebody. But you know, he he realizes that you know the restaurant is key because the outer restaurant was just a guy and his wife that worked it. And that worked out fine. It was off season, but in the summer he said it was so busy they couldn't keep up. And he couldn't keep help. And it's like, you know, you're in the middle of nowhere and you gotta get help in a restaurant, and you know sometimes you're busy, sometimes you're not. It's a it's a tough, it's a tough gig, but you know, they need to figure out how they could somebody could open a little, you know, live there and have a little simple restaurant and they don't need much money. I don't know, but they know how to cook. I mean, it seems like a good gig for the right person, right, right couple.

Uh then we got Jared. Okay, Jared wants to weigh in on the uh the recorded call episode, talking about the audio quality.

We're talking about the uh the the first recorded phone call in history or something like that.

Right, right, right. He he he he points out that the audio quality on the recorded call was much worse than a usual episode. Gator was loud and scratchy while Sliceberg was quiet and muffled. I feel like that's true normally, but yeah. And I'm more quiet and muffled.

Okay, uh, and then he says if I turned it down. To make Gator's volume pleasant, I couldn't hear Sliceberg. If I turned it up to hear Sliceberg, Gator blew out my ears. I'm not sure how you can fix the mix, but it's way off currently.

Well, first of all, we gotta tell Jared that we can't fix the mix because we don't have a mix. I mean, we do magic mastering. We pay for magic mastering, but that obviously can't fix something that that's that bad often to begin with, right?

But the other thing is like I listened back because I was thinking, oh, this could be a new thing where I call you and record it, and I was like, this sounds I couldn't listen to it. Like I tried and I was like, okay, I can't listen to this.

Because I think, you know, it's gonna vary, right? Like, I should probably be able to explain this in in articulate, you know, in a very articulate way, but I'm just not able to. But like because, you know, the sun, obviously the sun sets a little earlier every day as you approach the uh the equinox, right? Or the so it's like it's gonna it's gonna like do it's I feel like it's um the sun's gonna do its thing. I just I feel like it's it's more better for our natural rhythms because it's just the natural uh way the universe is or something like that, and it's it's probably better. And I think that I haven't heard a convincing argument for why we still need to adjust the clocks. I've heard a lot of like you know, oh well, you know, it had to do with saving on energy costs in the winter, or it had to do with the harvest in the fall, or it had to do with school. Like uh, but everything everything seems like it was oh in the old days, they used to do it for I haven't heard anybody you know talk about something that's a convincing modern day argument. Right, exactly. That's what I'm trying to say.
