Making the Modern Man
Supersex was a podcast exploring sexuality, relationships, and sex education that ran from July 2024 to December 2025.
The show was created during an earlier stage of my professional journey as I developed my work as a sexologist, educator, and communicator. Through conversations with guests and discussions on a wide range of topics, Supersex aimed to make sexuality education more accessible, practical, and relevant to everyday life.
As my work has evolved, so too has the question that sits at the centre of it.
For years, I have worked with young people in schools, disability settings, and relationship and sexuality education. Along the way, I found myself becoming increasingly interested in a bigger question:
What are the developmental tasks of modern manhood?
In 2026, Supersex will be re-launched as Making the Modern Man.
The new podcast explores the journey from boyhood to manhood in the modern world. Through research, conversation, and real-world experience, the show examines the five pillars of modern manhood: Self, Relationships, Responsibility, Sexuality, and Contribution.
Each episode seeks to answer a simple but important question:
What helps boys become capable, reflective, relationship-skilled men?
Featuring conversations with psychologists, educators, coaches, researchers, fathers, community leaders, and men with lived experience, Making the Modern Man explores the challenges, responsibilities, relationships, and opportunities that shape the men we become.
Thank you to everyone who listened, supported, appeared on, and contributed to Supersex.
This isn't the end of the conversation.
It's the beginning of a much bigger one.

🎙️ STIs Don't Play Favorites—So Let's Talk About Testing! 🎙️
On this episode of Supersex, we’re taking the gloves off and getting real about STI testing and sexual health. Sherman and I are kicking things off with a truth bomb: STI rates can be just as high in monogamous relationships as in the swinger community. We’re sharing our own awkward and sometimes painful experiences, all to drive home one crucial point—regular STI checks are a must for everyone, no matter who you’re with or how you identify.
Curious about why chlamydia is called the "silent threat" or how syphilis can turn deadly? We’re breaking it all down, from the symptoms you need to know to the complications you definitely want to avoid. We’re diving into the details of chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, HSV, and more, offering up practical advice on prevention, vaccinations, and why routine testing should be on everyone’s to-do list.
Straight men, listen up—we’re talking to you, too! It’s time to face the facts: STI awareness isn’t just for the queer community. Starting and ending every relationship with a clean bill of health is a responsibility we all share, and we’re here to make sure you’re in the know.
And we’re not stopping there. We’re tackling the big misconceptions around HIV and the discrimination gay men still face when it comes to blood donation. Sherman’s sharing a personal story about being turned away from a blood bank, despite being celibate for nearly a year. We’re calling out the hypocrisy and shining a light on the game-changing power of PrEP and PEP in HIV prevention.
Finally, we’re giving a big shout-out to the M Clinic in Perth for their inclusive and accessible sexual health services. Join us for an episode that’s going to flip the script on how you think about STI testing and sexual health—forever.

STI Testing and Sexual Health Awareness
Speaker 1Hey to all the straights , gays and nays , welcome to Supersex , the podcast where we have conversations and share our perspectives on sexuality , sex and more .
Speaker 2I'm Sheldon and I'm Jordan , two friends , one straight , one gay , taking on all things sex . Let's do it STIs I'm excited . Can I say that I'm excited about STIs ?
Speaker 1You can say whatever the fuck you want , it's your podcast . I'm excited about talking about STIs and educating people . It's pretty important . Obviously , Monday is going to be World Sex Health Day , so I think we should talk about things sexual health Not that we already don't talk sexual health . I think everything that we talk is sexual health , but the actual physical body , sexual health , STIs .
Speaker 2So let's talk STIs . How are we going to do it ?
Speaker 1I want to go straight in by asking you a question , Please do .
Speaker 2Okay , this doesn't really fit because you're married , but when's the last time you were checked when you were single ? Oh , when I was single . Okay , how about this ? When you were single ? How often did I was single ? Okay , how about this ?
Speaker 1When you were single , how often did you get checked ? Tell me the truth , See .
Speaker 2I've been a serial monogamist .
Speaker 1Listen to me , that's not the question I asked you , as when you , before you , got married , okay , I got tested prior to and at the end of every relationship that I've had , because I've always been , you know you just ruined my whole shtick here because I was really waiting for you to say I probably did like two times .
Speaker 2I'd be like you see , this is the problem with you , straight men .
Speaker 1See no , but I had to . I had to get tested because it was infidelity , so I needed to .
Speaker 2I feel like the problem is it was infidelity , so I needed to . I feel like the problem is here is that you are not like any other normal straight You're not like a normal straight man . You just ruin everything . Right now I do . I ruin a lot of things Because , look , I want to go straight in with this right Sure . So I want to talk about first of all , straight away off the bat , fucking get tested .
Speaker 1Boys , everybody , obviously boys and girls , but at the end of the day I'm not talking for girls out here , because we are two , men get fucking tested it's really , really important , even if you are a serial monogamous like I am , anything can happen you know , I read a fact that the prevalence of STIs within monogamous heterosexual relationships is at roughly the same rate as in the swinger community .
Speaker 2Holy shitballs Batman .
Speaker 1Yes , because heterosexual monogamous people are generally really fucked up with protecting themselves . Yes , and they're not very good with testing either .
Speaker 2And the thing is this right , let's just say you are a serial monogamous , that's fine . But let's say , before you started your first or second relationship , whatever your first real committed relationship you stepped around . You never got tested From that . You went into a relationship . You meet a chick .
Speaker 1happy days happened with my first done long-term girlfriend . So yeah , I'll tell you this story , and this is maybe why people don't get tested yep .
STI Testing and Stigma Awareness
Speaker 1I started off this relationship with a stripper mm-hmm , it has to be said . And we get into things and everything's going really , really good . And then she turns around and it's like hey , you might need to go and get yourself tested . And I'm like why ? And she's like I've just tested positive for chlamydia . Fuck , great , I think we've been in a relationship for like two or three weeks at this point and I was like just tested positive , does that mean that you've been shagging other people ? She's like no , no , no , this is from the person before . And I'm like okay , cool , I get to get tested . And at that time it was like a little pee test , do my pee test ? And it comes back as inconclusive . And I'm like , oh , for fuck's sakes . So the doctor calls me back in and I'm like so what's the deal now ? It's like well , basically I need to take a swab .
Speaker 2I'm like oh my god , not that swab not that .
Speaker 1What do you mean ? Like my mouth , or like just a tip , or what he's like ? No , he grabs my dick and shoves .
Speaker 2I wish you could not . I really hope that nobody sees this . It's on camera , fuck .
Speaker 1Like this right and he starts feeding like this giant Q-tip down my urethra and the pain is unbearable . There was no lube as well .
Speaker 2Hold on , just for the record . Yes , we are still saying you need to go and have this time .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah , don't scare the people I'm trying not to scare people , but anyway . So he goes in and this guy had no patient care at all swabs around I'm pretty certain . I've seen a q-tip like wiggling around my balls .
Speaker 1I don't know how that's even possible but I might have been hallucinating at this point . But uh , then he just like yanks this thing out , oh my god , out , where there comes like this little spurt of blood , and he runs off , gets the tests done , comes back . No , you're fine , you're clear , go off , you go . And I'm just like holy fuck , like I never want to go and get that .
Speaker 2I've done ever , ever , fucking good , I have done that before too .
Speaker 1It's painful , right it is painful .
Speaker 2Fortunately , I did it myself .
Speaker 1Is this a new kink Sounding ?
Speaker 2No , they gave it to me and said oh , here you go , this is what you need to do . Go do it . And was like oh no , the the q-tip was metal , oh , with the tiniest amount of cotton at the end , and you have to push it like two centimeters down and I was like dying . And the best part was I wasn't even doing it for an sti check . He's doing it for fun .
Speaker 2I had the shittest doctor who must have come out of doctor school the day before and was literally looking through a book because I know what was wrong at the time , and she was like oh look , let me see , do you have this symptom ? Do you have this symptom ? You know , sometimes it could be because of SDIs . I'm like I know for a fact I don't have one . It's like , let's just check anyway . And that was the test and understand , but don't be scared , people don't be scared . You probably won't get that check . So this is my thing . When it comes to your people of the straight kind or the straight persuasion , I reckon , um , that you need to . I feel like , if you're a serial monogamous , sure , how about going to check once every when you start a relationship , end a relationship ?
Speaker 1I think a lot of people don't want to go and get tested when they're in a relationship , though , because it signals to the other person that there might be infidelity . Correct , because , like , if you start off a relationship and there's no STI's and you're both together yeah , fluid bonded there is no way that an STI can get in there . Like , an STI just doesn't come and jump on you from the pavement , you know what I mean . Correct , so that to people , they're going to sit down and go what the fuck ? Like ? Where did this come from ? That's why you got to do it first .
Speaker 2Yeah , so you always do it . Do it at the beginning of the relationship and then at the end , because that way you know , but but this is my thing , okay , so I just want to get into a few things here . When it comes to , I believe this is what I believe based on my experience with straight men , and sometimes women that they don't ever get checked .
Speaker 2The amount of men that I know of when I say , oh , I'm going to get checked , I get checked regularly . I get checked every six months . Yeah , I used to get checked every three months when I started prep , which we'll talk about later . Yes , I had to do it every three months , and when I would tell people I'm doing it , they were like oh , why do you dance ? Often ? I'm like well , when's the last time you did it ?
Speaker 2They're like last year or a couple of years ago , or the one where I nearly fell on my back . I've never been tested . I'm like , but hold on . Do you have sex ? Oh yeah . Do you have unprotected sex ? Oh yeah . What do you mean ? I don't understand the idea that there are dudes out there , especially younger ones , that have never been tested or don't think that it's something that you should be doing . If you are having casual sex and you're not in a relationship , you get fucking tested . You should be getting tested regularly because there's this , I think there's this idea and this misconception that , as a straight person , that's not something you have to . All I need to worry about is getting someone pregnant , whereas a gay guy , oh no . No , you have to worry about that because you , you don't get aids . Yeah it's .
Speaker 1I always sort of draw the parallel of covet . Covet comes along . Every motherfucker is testing themselves 150 000 times a week . Absolutely , they're covering their mouth . They're fucking hand sanitizing , like literally they're rinsing their fingertips away with hand sanitizer because they don't want to get a cold . People are out there . Sticking their dicks in anything Dicks in other people's asses and pussies and mouths and stuff , picking up these infections that can radically change their life , if not kill them , yup , and they're just like , yeah , it's cool , I don't need to get tested .
Speaker 2Oh , I don't need to get tested .
Speaker 1Because I might pass it on to somebody else . I don't need to get tested . That's so fucked up .
Speaker 2It is so fucked up and the thing , the problem is , you know , with all the STIs that we're going to talk about today , yes , the strs that we're going to talk about today ? Yes , there are um signs , but sometimes some people are asymptomatic especially guys .
Speaker 1I 100 that you . It's like how fucked up is sex for chicks again ? Because they get all the symptoms , everything and we get and do this like oh , my balls itchy .
Speaker 2Yeah , but your balls are always itchy because , as a dude , you know your balls always get it that's why hands are always down our pants exactly so how do you know when it's an sti or just dickage ? Get a fucking test . Get a test get a test .
Speaker 2People aren't getting tested , though , because stigma , exactly because I don't want to be seen as dirty , exactly oh , I'm so glad you brought that word up dirty , because there is something that guys say like from grand . Obviously that absolutely shits me to tears . When they said oh , are you clean ?
Speaker 1I had a shower this morning .
Speaker 2Yes , I am so I'm the dickhead that will always be , that fool that'll go , oh yeah , I've showered . Or oh yeah , no , no , I douched . And they , oh , no , no . I mean , are you clean ? I don't know what you mean . Oh , are you , are you on prep or do you ? Are you , have you been tested ? Then , or whenever they say are you clean , I will always respond with yes , I have been tested and I'm negative for everything yes because the idea that to have the language again we spoke in the last episode about language is so important .
Speaker 2You ask if I'm clean implies that if you had any kind of STI , you're dirty .
Speaker 1Yeah , I think the and you see this in the swingers community they really emphasize D&D free .
Speaker 2Oh , big Same thing with Disease and drugs free .
Speaker 1When I first seen that little thing . I thought Dungeons and Dragons .
Speaker 2Exactly no same thing in the gay community , but that's a language thing , right . Disease and drugs free . When I first seen that little thing I thought Dungeons and Dragons .
Speaker 1Exactly no same thing in the gay community , but that's a language thing right , Disease and drug free yeah , it's so much better than saying are you clean ? Because you're implying that you're a dirty motherfucker .
Speaker 2Exactly If you get it . And the thing is this it's like do you realize how many people get STIs ? It is something that is it's going to happen . I'm not saying it's normal , but it's going to happen to you . If you have more than one partner , you could get a STI .
Speaker 1It's like HPV , I think is like an 80% prevalence rate throughout the population .
Speaker 2Yep .
Speaker 1The fuck . Exactly Sexually transmitted infection . 80% of people are probably going to have that . That's the thing is that people just assume that .
Speaker 2I think a lot of people go when they think sti is st is they think hiv yeah , they think about the big ones . They think about the big ones and go oh no , I definitely don't have that . I don't have any symptoms . Yeah , oh , I don't have crabs . I'm not itchy .
Speaker 1Well , you could have other stuff I don't actually think there's been a case of crabs reported in Australia since like 1980s .
Speaker 2I would fucking hope not , because that just scares the absolute bejesus out of me .
Speaker 1That's when people didn't realize that they could just shave their bush off and then it'll go .
Speaker 2It's just so gross Just thinking . No , it is gross thinking about these little things . That's gross . Unfortunately , my laptop has just died , so all my notes have disappeared , so I'm just going to remember what I was going to talk about all right .
Speaker 1Well , let's what we'll do is we'll jump into the five most prevalent ones , okay , from last year . Obviously we don't have the data for this year . Let's go for the five big ones from 2023 . Give us the first one Chlamydia .
Speaker 2We make a clap . Sorry , so Chlamydia , let's go with chlamydia .
Speaker 1Chlamydia is bacterial infection , like a few of the big ones are . They're all bacterial and a lot of them are easily treated with antibiotics . But you can only treat them If you know you have them . If you know you have them , how do you know you ?
Speaker 2got them , Get tested motherfuckers , especially for guys .
Speaker 1Yes , so chlamydia 2023 , there was over 1.7 million people in the States who got this . Oh shit , 1.7 million people . The states who got this oh shit , 1.7
STI Symptoms and Testing Awareness
Speaker 1million people . I've got a question for you .
Speaker 2Where do you get chlamydia as in in your body ? Do you know ?
Speaker 1your penis , your vagina , the vulva . You can go in the anus . This is . I'm here to tell you people tell me , enlighten me , wise one I'm . I'm here to enlight you people . Tell me , enlighten me , wise one . I'm here to enlighten you , you straight boys .
Speaker 2So when I get tested For my full screening , swab up the arse . Piss test , bloods , mouth test yes , because you can get . You can get it In your mouth , in your throat , that's right . You can get it on your dick . You can get it up your ass , in your throat , that's right . You can get it on your dick . You can get it up your ass and , as a female , in your hoo-ha , in your hoo-ha .
Speaker 1Don't use that word your vagina , your vagina .
Speaker 2Girls have a penis , boys have a penis and girls have a vagina Vagina .
Speaker 1And you should test all those places because mucous membranes the ass , the penis , the vagina , the mouth , all mucus membranes where things get transmitted a little bit easier .
Speaker 2And if you are putting a dick in any of those orifices , test them .
Speaker 1For sure you have to . You have to Because otherwise you could start developing symptoms such as if you're a chick , vaginal discharge . Okay , not fun . I'm sure I'm assuming our logic . No , because that discharge can be like yellow , white it looks scary . It looks scary , it doesn't look nice , but then comes with burning sensation when you pee out he's . It comes with pain , and especially pain during intercourse as well . Okay , so that gets like really bad and bleeding this really sucks like those four girls just stop bleeding , and especially during sex as well .
Speaker 1Bleed , bleed , bleed , bleed , bleed , and that is chlamydia For boys . For guys , let me guess Not much . Not much If it gets really bad like and this is a very few cases yeah , discharge from the penis . Yep , right , the same sort of colour , burning sensation , pain in the testicles Usually only one , okay , but yeah , but it's most guys who have the clap don't actually know they've got the clap For example , if you have pain in your testicles that's something as guys we have sometimes You're not going to go .
Speaker 2Oh shit , I must get tested . I probably have the clap . Yeah , if you , let's just say one of the things is being itchy , Like I said , we're always itchy down there . Just because you might not be in , the first thought is not , oh , let me go get tested . So , boys , you might not know what you have . Just go get tested . And also , the thing is this you might be a good dude , you might use condoms all the time , whatever the case may be , but it doesn't mean that the person that you're with is doing the same thing .
Speaker 1That's right . And even if they have like , let's say , you've just started seeing a new person and that person has just come out of a long-term relationship and they were completely faithful yes , their partner might not have been Exactly .
Speaker 2Their partner might not have been Exactly . Their partner could have slept with 50,000 people . That's right . They've slept with your new partner . That new partner comes with you . You've got 61,000 people all together on your dick .
Speaker 1Oh , sounds hot . If you're into that sort of thing , that is , if you're into that thing . All right . The problem with these things is , if you're into that sort of thing , that is that thing all right , so we're done . But the problem with these things is if you're not getting tested , you're not getting treatment . Yes , and if you're not getting treatment , you're spreading . You're firstly you're spreading , but then you're also opening yourself up to complications yes , for later on in life right .
Speaker 1So for women , that can um result in , I think , called pid , so pelvic inflammatory disease , okay , which is basically just like a massive . So for women , that can result in , I think , called PID , so pelvic inflammatory disease , which is basically just like a massive inflammation of all of the organs in a reproductive system , which obviously can probably affect reproduction and stuff like that Infertility you can start getting ectopic pregnancies , pelvic pain . It just gets real bad , real quick For guys .
Speaker 2Basically the epididymis which is like the curly parts in your balls sort of feels like noodles , like udon noodles , right , they get inflamed .
Speaker 1Okay , sterility , you get sterile , simple , which could suck .
Speaker 2if you want kids , it could suck .
Speaker 1But there's another complication that having chlamydia within your system makes you more exposed and more at risk of contracting HIV .
Speaker 2So basically just fucking get tested .
Speaker 1Look , we're going to say this all the way through the episode . And it's simple as well . Right , Get the test .
Speaker 2We'll get into that about where you can get tested and stuff , just like , don't be scared , it's not that hard .
Speaker 1And there's no sexual stigma around it anymore .
Speaker 2Yeah , Like you used to have to walk into a doctor and be like walk a shame , exactly , and maybe you're not comfortable with your doctor and talking about , let's just say , as a gay man , for example . You're not comfortable talking to your doctor about being gay or asking for tests for HIV Plenty of places . Yeah , later on I'll tell you all about them .
Speaker 1Please do . But yeah , clap , simple treatment , antibiotics , yep .
Speaker 2All right , gonorrhea , gonorrhea , okay , gonorrhea , that's such a nice word . Gonorrhea , gonorrhea .
Speaker 1It could be like an ABBA song or something . Gonorrhea .
Speaker 2My question is what is gonorrhea ?
Speaker 1So it's another bacterial infection and symptoms burning , urination discharge . A lot of the time it's asymptomatic . Again Don't even know you've got it .
Speaker 2Again ass , dick , mouth , you can get in all three and also vagina , vagina , yep .
Speaker 1Yep .
Speaker 2Anywhere there's a mucous membrane . Again , this can be quite easily tested for and quite easily gotten rid of as well .
Speaker 1Oh , too right , but with this one , because gonorrhea is getting a bit more prevalent around because people aren't getting tested . Yes , it's spreading a little bit more , yeah , and the actual bacteria itself is becoming more resistant to the antibiotics . Oh , that's a bit scary so the best way to combat it is to combat it early , before gonorrhea really takes a hold within your system , because the more bacteria you have within the system the harder it is for the antibiotic to work .
Speaker 1Yeah , okay , so get to it . Maybe you should have put that we're not fucking doctors .
Speaker 2Yes , For the record , we are not medical doctors . This is not medical advice . This is just our own opinion .
Speaker 1This is like public service announcement .
Speaker 2Public service announcement here yeah .
Speaker 1If you want to get medical facts .
Speaker 2Disclaimer Please don't talk to your doctors . We are not doctors .
Speaker 1All right . So for the females , increased vaginal discharge , painful urination , bleeding between the periods , pain during intercourse and pelvic pain . So basically , all the same shit as chlamydia . You probably can't tell the difference between the two without getting a fucking test . For guys , you're going to have either white , yellow or green discharge .
Speaker 2Oh .
Speaker 1Yeah , that doesn't sound fun . No , again , you're going to have painful urination and swelling in one of your nuts oh , same as chlamydia . You ain't going to fucking know .
Speaker 2Exactly , Get tested bitches .
Speaker 1Yeah , but for both of them . Bothenders anal itching . If you played around in the back door and somebody's got gonorrhea , your ass is gonna itch yeah , it's gonna itch , not like when you've just had diarrhea and you've just been wiping too much .
Speaker 2But your ass is gonna itch , itch , but again at the same time , fishes cause ishing , ishing , fishes causeching . So you might not know which one it is . So again , get tested . I've had two fishes before and all my days the absolute ridiculous itching . And I remember thinking one day I was like hey , is there something happening there ? Should I go get tested ? And I was freaking out . Got tested , obviously nothing was not obviously , but there was nothing , but it was because I had fish .
Speaker 1Fisher Public service announcement as well . Anal itching turns people into monsters . Yes , it does . I don't care if you're the nicest person Like fucking Mother Teresa when you've got anal itching .
Speaker 2Tell me about it , I know all about it . Like I said , you turn into a twat . Exactly that is me I am a twat .
Speaker 1But with gonorrhea , though , if it's in your rectum , you're going to get discharged from that Okay , which is really hard to stop , because you can't put a tampon In your asson , in your ass , in your ass , because it'll land up in your throat .
Speaker 2Maybe you could , but just don't do it , please . Yeah , don't do it Without a base , without a trace . Your ass is going to swallow it .
Speaker 1And you can also get gonorrhea in your mouth .
Speaker 2Yes , you can .
Speaker 1So you might have a really sore throat and sit there and go oh no , it's just a cold , it's just a cold , it's tonsillitis .
Speaker 2No , motherfucker , you got a dick down there . You got gonorrhea , gonorrhea .
Speaker 1Here we go again , mama .
Speaker 2Just down my throat .
Speaker 1And there it is . We just ruined ABBA for everybody . I reckon we should release an album .
Speaker 2I'm just like Look sure , I'm down for whatever . Yeah , but as long as you sing a song .
Speaker 1I'll do my best . I'll get my boyfriend Dave Grohl on here . I'll do it .
Speaker 2Oh my God , you and your little- .
Speaker 1Go Dave Grohl . That's all I'm saying .
Speaker 2You and your little man crush God with you All right .
STI Complications and Vaccination Explained
Speaker 1Complications , though , for gonorrhea are very fucking similar to chlamydia . Same same , Same same , yeah . But with gonorrhea , though , we've got the other complication If it's left untreated for a while , you can get arthritis , dermatitis , Some losses of shit yeah , Like if the very fucking least do it for and Some lots of shit . Yeah , Like if the very fucking least do it for your skin . Go get tested , Do it for your skin . You want to get that glow up .
Speaker 2I like that . That's going to be the thing from now on Get tested , do it for your skin .
Speaker 1Do it for your skin . Get that glow for your skin . Get that glow for your skin Is your skin shit .
Speaker 2You , you probably got the STI .
Speaker 1Maybe she's made for it .
Speaker 2Maybe she's gonorrhea .
Speaker 1Who knows , stop , please , stop immediately .
Speaker 2Immediately stop . Immediately no . Oh shit , next one , what's next ?
Speaker 1So gonorrhea easily treated with your antibiotics . Next one HPV .
Speaker 2So human papillomavirus , papillomavirus , that's the one .
Speaker 1This one's HPV , so human papillomavirus , papillomavirus , that's the one . This one's a virus , okay , but there's like 100 different strains to it . Okay , like 100 different strains . That's more than I can count to .
Speaker 2I'll prove it to you . One Mississippi , mississippi , please don't .
Speaker 1Hpv at the very low end of the scale can cause genital warts ? Yes , correct . But as it starts getting more into the system it starts causing cancers . That's right , like really bad fucking cancers .
Speaker 2Fun fact , I'm about to tell you something that you didn't know . Ooh , go , go . Did you know there is now a way for men to check pretty much like a pap smear . So you know how women go for a pap smear and they check for irregular Cock smear .
Speaker 1Ass smear .
Speaker 2Look , they go for- .
Speaker 1Imagine going into a doctor and saying I need a cocksmere . Didn't you do that in your tissue paper last night ? I mean , what the fuck look I ?
Speaker 2can't remember what the name was . But essentially , what they do is they do a test . It's pretty much the same as a pap smear , but for men , yep , for the anus , okay . So obviously , yes , you're going to test for hpv and stuff , but also if there's any irregular cells that could , uh , end up being cancerous I'm not going to explain what the test is . I've done it . Let me just say very awkward why ?
Speaker 1because the doctor laid with his tongue no , it was a sheet .
Speaker 2But the awkwardness of me laying on my side spreading my butt cheeks for her to um penetrate my asshole . Look it was . It was . It was interesting , but again , a new um breakthrough in technology . That is really good . It's another test that , as is as test that , as a man that sleeps with men , it's a good idea to do .
Speaker 1And that's the beautiful thing about medicine at the moment is it's developing so much that like a simple little backdoor check .
Speaker 2Not that hard . Not that hard you can check for so many different things .
Speaker 1Yeah , and I think days are pretty much gone where somebody's shoving a rod down the end of your cock to try and get a sample Exactly . The testing protocols are becoming so much more refined now .
Speaker 2Pee in a cup , pee in a cup , give some blood . Done Easy , easy , all right .
Speaker 1Back to Done Easy , Easy , All right back to HPV . So HPV there's about 79 million Americans who have HPV and 14 million neurons every single year . That's pretty scary . That's a fucking lot of people .
Speaker 2So is there ? First of all , besides treatment , do they have like a vaccine for it ? For example , is there vaccination that you get for hpv ?
Speaker 1yeah , wonderful . I think every kid has to have that now , right in australia I don't know .
Speaker 2I do know that I've had . I'm pretty sure that for one or was it for hpv ?
Speaker 1I think I might have had one as an adult yeah , I think you can get it as as adult as an adult .
Speaker 2I know that from the sexual health clinics . You can .
Speaker 1Yeah , and you certainly can get it as a kid as well . And this is like a thing for the anti-vaxxers out there . I am very fucking anti-vax after the whole COVID thing . Yes , anybody who knows my story . Fucking they sit there . You're getting a flu vaccine Fuck off . Right , but there are certain vaccines that you get because the alternative is fucked .
Speaker 2Yeah , do you want your kid to have polio ?
Speaker 1Exactly .
Speaker 1And the chance of you picking up HPV without you know that vaccination is pretty fucking high , like nearly a quarter of Americans have got it , absolutely so get the fucking vaccination . But so there's basically low risks and high risks to HPV . The low risks warts . So it's going to happen on your cock , it's going to happen on your backside , your mouth , your throat , wherever you get it right . They can be big , they can be like flat , they look like cauliflower it's Just imagine giving somebody a blowjob and seeing like a little bunch of cauliflower on there .
Speaker 2I really don't want to picture that , no . Thanks , you're welcome . I really don't want to picture that , no .
Speaker 1Thanks , you're welcome .
Speaker 2You're just the gift that keeps on giving .
Speaker 1I really am Not the good gift as well .
Speaker 2Maybe that's why people call me gonorrhea , but also , don't worry , you can get rid of him Just get a test , just get a test .
Speaker 1Just get a test . Get some antibiotics and old Jay will be gone . You're funny , but the high risk is when it starts getting to cancer . Yep , for the majority , those cancers just get worse and worse and worse , and they're normally affecting the reproductive system . Guys can get penis cancer from HPV .
Speaker 2Let's cut your dick off .
Speaker 1Did I cut your dick off ? I don't know .
Speaker 2I'm just saying , let's not find out , go get tested , and then you won't have to know if they're going to cut your dick off or not .
Speaker 1Fucking hell , I'm going down to get vaccinated right now . Cut my dick off .
Speaker 2You know what ? I'm so glad we're actually talking about this because I'm due for my test . I haven't been for a little while , so after this I'm 100% booking in and I'm going to go check .
Speaker 1Don't let those fuckers cut your dick off .
Speaker 2Everything , because I don't want my dick to be cut off . I mean , if they cut two inches , I'm gone .
Speaker 1Two inches is a lot Shit . Oh Lord , we digress again , as per usual .
Speaker 2I knew this episode was going to be like this . It's fine , I knew it .
Speaker 1I was so thinking about like just pulling up a picture of the blue waffle and just sitting there talking about that for the rest of the episode , but no , oh my days . So yes , so complications , hp , that for the rest of the episode . But no , oh my days . So , yes , so complications , hpv , though , genital warts , yeah , low end , high end . Cervical cancers , anal cancers , they can't cut your exactly , you know so basically hpv pretty serious .
Speaker 2Make sure that you actually go and get tested , especially also for that . When you get tested , I'd say , get tested for everything , like don't leave anything out just say look , say to your um . Like I said , the place I'm going to tell you about they're pretty good . They'll check you for everything . But if you're going to your doctor , wherever you are , your medical um practitioner , yeah , ask for everything .
Speaker 1And don't just stop at paying a cup or a swab .
Speaker 2Yeah and don't feel bad and don't get embarrassed like , oh , if they ask you questions , unfortunately they're gonna have to ask you questions . Some of them are embarrassing , you don't want to do them , but yeah just get tested for everything .
Speaker 1Yeah , absolutely , you're getting it done . Yeah , most , most time it's covered through medicare anyway . So exactly , whatever , all right .
Speaker 2Next one hsv herpes simplex virus I didn't know there was anything else after herpes . Herpes , is it true that if you don't like , you have that like in your body dormant and if you have it , you have it , if you don't , you don't ?
Speaker 1Pretty sure .
Speaker 2Because I don't think I do , because I have never had a cold sore in my life .
Speaker 1I'm the same . I'm the same . Other people's bodies react
HSV and Syphilis Transmission Risks
Speaker 1to it differently . Yeah , so there are people out there who have the virus and it can get passed on by a kiss from a grandma . That's quite often how kids get it .
Speaker 2Yeah , right are you saying don't kiss your grandma anymore ?
Speaker 1definitely don't , not with tongue anyway oh my god , stop it . You're so terrible depends on who your grandma is oh , my stop immediately . No , she could be hot stop , she could be like that lisa ann porn porn chick .
Speaker 2She was hot so yeah , hsv , hey , it's a car god , you're such a fucking bogan . I just love cars okay , hsv , so herpes simplex virus .
Speaker 1Yes , but there's two strains . So HSV1 is the oral , so that's the mouth stuff , and HSV2 is genital .
Speaker 2Right , so giving too much Glock ? Glock 3000 is one Mm-hmm .
Speaker 1Yep , kissing your grandma too much with tongue , stop Will get you HSV1 .
Speaker 2And HSV2 is kissing your grandma too much with tongue stop we'll get you hsv1 and then just eat two is doing hanky panky , yeah what did bumping uglies , bumping uglies , bumping uglies .
Speaker 1Never heard that I love it .
Speaker 2It's my favorite one bumping uglies maybe because mine's not ugly okay , calm down it's quite pretty all right .
Speaker 1Model dick relax got like the like the Brad Pitt of dicks .
Speaker 2Oh my God , Calm it down .
Speaker 1Well , I've got the Dwayne Johnson who keeps winking at you . Gives you the stare , the smoldering stare .
Speaker 2I was trying to think of something smart , but it just can't . It's name's anaconda , just go with it . Dwayne Johnson's big . That's all . I'm going to think of something smart , but it just can't . It's name's anaconda , just go with it .
Speaker 1Dwayne Johnson's big , that's all I'm going to say . Big and strong . The smoldering stare is small irregularity .
Speaker 2Whatever it looks at you and it gives you the magnum .
Speaker 1You get pregnant from 27 miles away . I could do that . I want to . About one in six people have HSV . That's quite about . One in six people have HSV . That's , yeah , quite significant . The general herpes so few symptoms for it . Initially you're gonna have painful blisters or ulcers wherever the infection has got it right . That sounds painful . That sounds horrible , especially on dick or I sounds horrible , especially on a dick or on a vulva or on your ass , like that is . Imagine having an ulcer on your asshole , on your asshole .
Speaker 2No , I love the way you said that Asshole .
Speaker 1Asshole . Yeah , so you're going to have those . It's going to be itching , it's going to be burning , you're going to have flu-like symptoms . You're going to have flu-like symptoms . You're going to bleed Like if it's on your ass . Imagine trying to go to the toilet and wipe that thing .
Speaker 2Why did you just do that to your nose when you said that ?
Speaker 1Got itchy . Maybe I've got HSV in my nose .
Speaker 2No , but think about like guys , look , we're not here to scare people , but we are Because you can avoid all of this by literally just going to get tested . Going to get tested , going to get tested ? Do you want your asshole to have ulcers ? And fucking no cauliflowers and shit fuck no cauliflower is not cool .
Speaker 1Cauliflower and sex just doesn't get like . There are many foods that go together with sex cauliflower is not one of them . No , no like if it's growing on your dick it's a bad thing , but like if you're trying to put it in somewhere as well , it goes crumbly right .
Speaker 2You speak from experience Right back to HSVs .
Speaker 1So once you get over that initial outbreak it sort of lessens out a little bit , but it will keep coming back .
Speaker 2It's a gift that keeps on giving right .
Speaker 1Yeah , it won't ever be as severe as the first , but it doesn't disappear . But it doesn't disappear . They just become less severe and shorter in duration . Right , but you're still going to get the added benefit of the blisters and the ulcers . It's like that . Dana's Direct ad .
Speaker 2But wait , there's more , there's more . You get blisters this month .
Speaker 1Herpes can also be passed on to a baby through vaginal birth . That's pretty fucked up . Yeah , so you can totally give your kid severe complications .
Speaker 2Just from having herpes .
Speaker 1Just from having herpes , just from having herpes .
Speaker 1Wow . It can develop in psychological ways as well . So stress , anxiety , depression , and that's basically because you just keep getting these outbreaks . It's like what the fuck can I do about it ? Can't really do too much about it , yep . So of course , of course it's going to bring out stress and anxiety , like you want to go and check somebody new . Oh fuck , like now I've got to have that whole conversation and whatnot . So there's that stress and anxiety that comes from that and possibly depression that goes from it as well . And , like most of these other ones , increased risk of HIV Not good , not good , not . Increased risk of HIV Not good , not good , not good . And basically because you can't really get rid of a virus unless your body does it by itself . Right , but you can take antiviral medications to reduce the symptoms Correct , and to help reduce the transmission rates Good , but that's about all you can do for it . But essentially , once you get it , you got it . Once you got it , you got it .
Speaker 2So again be careful .
Speaker 1It's like having a baby .
Speaker 2We haven't said this already yet , but use condoms also people . Yes , Use condoms . This might help stop the spread .
Speaker 1And not just for your dick as well . Yeah , like going down on somebody , like it's easy if you're going down on a dick , because you can blow a dick with a condom on , right , right . But then it gets difficult when you want to go down on somebody with a vulva . Correct , because what do you put on the dick ?
Speaker 2Because guaranteed glad wrap's not really a great thing okay , look , I don't know , I'm just , I'm just looking for ways to help people out here so there's these things called dental damps . Right , there is also a latex , and actually you know what you said . It's pretty much like cling wrap , but it's latex . I've seen it . You put it over the pussy and you are but you know how expensive they are very they're very expensive and guaranteed .
Speaker 2I certainly ain't going out to a nightclub with the dental dam in my back pocket also I'm gonna say , look how many people are gonna be like putting their , shoot their uh through some latex but here's the thing right , there's a really cool way to do it condom cut it yeah , cut the tip , snip it up , chopped down .
Speaker 1Hmm , come on , that becomes like what ? 20 cents , 30 cents ?
Speaker 2there you go if that and if you go to certain places to a CR text , I give you two for free yeah .
Speaker 1So there you go , yeah , one for your dick , one for your tongue .
Speaker 2Giddy up . Tongue condom , tongue condom . I just had a visual . I reckon we've got to create that .
Speaker 1We've got to do an album and come up with a tongue condom .
Speaker 2Let's do it .
Speaker 1I'm going to see if I can actually put a tongue condom on my tongue .
Speaker 2Can you please not , and don't ever tell me that again , and don't even tell me how it went .
Speaker 1I better get the watermelon flavored . One did I have peach .
Speaker 2I like peach so what's the next one we're talking about ?
Speaker 1next one is my personal favorite because , like I'm a history nerd okay oh , is this ?
Speaker 2this is the one with the , the I was trying to think of before the pirates .
Speaker 1Yeah , the crazy people .
Speaker 2The crazy people and the pirates Syphilis .
Speaker 1Syphilis yeah syphilis , bacterial Again . So we're back to bacterias . This one goes through different stages , though . Okay Right , the last part being you turn fucking crazy . Bat shit , bat shit , crazy , like King George , all the pirates .
Speaker 2Went nuts , went nuts . Too much fucking .
Speaker 1Got syphilis .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1Might have just been fucked the wrong person , who knows ?
Speaker 2But yeah , touche , because , again just for the record , doesn't mean you have to sleep with a lot of people to get any of these things . Don't assume that , because people that sleep around with a lot of people get this you could sleep with one person and get any of these things .
Speaker 1Well , like I said at the start of the episode , swingers , they fuck a lot of people . Yes , exact same prevalence . As people , as people who are in monogamous relationships .
Speaker 2The problem is that a lot of people don't get checked because they think I'm in monogamous relationship , I don't need to get checked . That's right continue continue .
Speaker 1I shall thank you . So about 130 000 cases of this in the us every year ridiculous . And there's a bit of a rise with congenital syphilis , so syphilis has been passed on to babies . That's pretty fucked up it's really up Because I don't have a choice on this shit . Of course not , but you have a choice to bag and tag it and get tested Bag and tag it .
Speaker 2You've never heard of bag and tag . No , I've never heard of bag and tag . It sounds like the most hetero thing I've ever heard in my whole life .
Speaker 1Bag and tag it .
Speaker 2Yes , but please do it . I don't like the , but please do it .
Speaker 1He rolled his eyes at me . It's not the first time he's ever done that .
Syphilis Complications and Risks Explained
Speaker 1All right , so there's four stages . Primary stage is you're going to get painless sauce . All right , they've got like this really fancy word for him , but I can't pronounce it Chankres , chankres , chankres , chankres , chankres . Yeah , let's go with that . Let's go with that . Let's go to chankers .
Speaker 2it's probably some doctor sitting there listening to this guy .
Speaker 1This guy is literally actually wow , he's so french , I've got to remind you , I'm english .
Speaker 2We don't like french people , just out of because all right , so chankers chankers .
Speaker 1whatever they are , they're at the infection site , so they're basically your penis your vulva , your anus , your mouth , wherever it is , and they're going to heal without any sort of treatment .
Speaker 2Okay , that's good Guaranteed If you see those things on your junk go to the fucking doctor and get them sorted out .
Speaker 1Then it's going to start with a secondary stage , which is skin rashes , mainly on the palms of your hand , oh , soles of your feet , oh . So if you're into foot play and you see like bit of a rash on the bottom of your feet , that person got some issues . Maybe they got some fistless but then that the secondary stage is also mucous membrane lesions , fever , swollen lymph nodes , sore throat , hair loss , muscle aches , fatigue .
Speaker 2So a shitload of things You're going to feel like you've got the flu . You're feeling disgusting .
Speaker 1Yeah , you're feeling like I did last week and my wife felt last week Just fucking hideous . She didn't have syphilis . Thankfully Did you have syphilis thank , you have syphilis probably not . I really hope not . Better going get tested , or else you should cut my dick off if I don't two inches gone . I have to find it first . Then we go into a latent stage the bacteria is still in your body , but no symptoms okay , okay , but that's like the calm before the storm . I have the storm .
Speaker 2Yeah , so I have the storm I have the storm Because you think about it and then you go over . I have the storm where it's calm and I have the storm .
Speaker 1Oh , yeah , okay , yeah , sweet . But then the other part of the storm is tertiary stage , tertiary stage T . But then the other part of the storm is tertiary stage , tertiary stage , tertiary stage . What happens in tertiary stage so this one lasts a while years Is this crazy stage ? This is crazy stage , but it also fucks up a whole heap of other things . So it can get your heart , your brain , your nerves , your eyes , your blood vessel , your liver , your bones , your joints , everything , everything . It's going to fuck you up big time .
Speaker 2These complications can lead to death who knew that this could be so bad . I love the way you pronounce that I should probably say the right thing , but I just love sayingithilus .
Speaker 1It's not syphilis anymore .
Speaker 2We renamed it .
Speaker 1Pithilus yeah , basically it can kill you . People have died , like people back in the day used to die from syphilis , all the fucking time . And it was like one of those things you get it . It's like people would just write you off .
Speaker 2Didn't they drink rum because of like ? Wasn't there like a weird thing that ?
Speaker 1they used to do to try , I think , all sorts of shit , thinking that that would help them . But yeah , like mercury . So blackbeard , like I love pirate history , blackbeard when he blockaded charlestown he didn't actually want to loot and plunder the entire place , but he just wanted a chest of medicines because him and all of his crew had syphilis . You learn something new every day , yeah , and basically what they would do is they'd inject mercury into their dicks , which was a very fucking painful thing to do .
Speaker 1Oh my God , Because they thought that that treated syphilis .
Speaker 2But yeah , it didn't actually work , and then their dicks fell off .
Speaker 1Well , maybe not . Blackbeard's head got cut off , so he didn't ultimately die from syphilis .
Speaker 2It wasn't the fist of the security . Yeah , no he .
Speaker 1His marine with a sword . His name was Fistless Captain .
Speaker 2Fistless . Captain Fistless did not kill .
Speaker 1Blackbeard .
Speaker 2In my head . He did . Sorry , so basically complications are pretty bad when it comes to .
Speaker 1Yeah , and so there's like three basically big ones . It's a neurosyphilis . That's when it gets into your nervous system , right , and that's when you're going to start getting crazy shit , like the headaches , the behavior , the movement , like , yes , people are gonna sit there and look at your behavior and what you're saying . You guys say something's wrong . This mother fuckers cooked , yep , all right . Then you can also get into your heart and with that causes aneurysms and like inflammation and all that some shit . So you can , you can dare it , can fuck your heart up , it can cause death through a cardiovascular way . And then the other stage is basically like you've got large sores on your skin and your bones and liver and organs and what's that called that part ?
Speaker 1Gematis .
Speaker 2Just looking at the way . I'm like what is that way hey ?
Speaker 1look at you . It's glad , I'm glad that we can both read , but the uh , yeah , the scary one is congenital syphilis that's when it gets passed from the mother to the baby yeah , yeah , which is pretty fucking sad yeah , it's deformities , yeah , deformities developmental delays , stillbirth , like for somebody who works with kids with um disabilities , you know the thought of passing a disability onto a child based solely on something that is so easily preventable preventable .
Speaker 2So number one check . You can get a check so easily and get rid of it so easily it's like just get it done .
Speaker 1You know , but people aren't getting it done .
Speaker 2I know it's , it's getting born . I know it seems like we're in the shape forcing this issue , but the thing is people need to understand that there's so many things that can come from you not testing yourself bad , bad shit that you can prevent just by going for one simple test that's going to take an hour out of your day .
Speaker 1That's it and that's all . It will take just one fucking hour , one hour your day .
Speaker 245 minutes of that hour is waiting to get actually to the doctor and then there's like 10 minutes of you just getting your all your shit done and then you gotta , then you go see .
STI Prevention and Stigma Awareness
Speaker 1I made a mistake when I said that itchy ass will bring out the worst sort of person it's waiting for a doctor actually , oh , absolutely with .
Speaker 2The worst sort of person is waiting for a doctor actually .
Speaker 1Oh , absolutely , what an itchy arse .
Speaker 2Oh , just saying , just imagine . Oh no , I don't want to imagine things . I'd be like a fucking devil . Oh my God . No , thank you , I don't imagine .
Speaker 1But the good thing is syphilis if you catch it early . Single shot of penicillin you are fucking home and hose done Because .
Speaker 2shot of penicillin , you are fucking home and hoes done Because penicillin is a good thing and it's very easy to get and it will kill that bastard , and you don't need to inject mercury into your dick . Just a little bit of penicillin and fist list is gone .
Speaker 1And you don't even need the injection into your dick .
Speaker 2No mercury here , you don't need a metal dick . Imagine a metal dick .
Speaker 1Imagine a metal dick . What's his ?
Speaker 2name . Colossus From Wolverine ? No , wolverine . Marvel , deadpool , colossus the big dude that's like metal . That's a Ryan Reynolds , I'm not going to lie . Have I ever thought about the fact that he's his dick metal , absolutely ? That's a Ryan Reynolds thing , I'm not going to lie . Have I ever thought about the fact that is his dick metal , absolutely , 100% of all ? When I saw him I was like I wonder .
Speaker 1Well , yeah , it stands to reason , because I once seen it stands . I hope so I once seen Henry VIII's armour and that had a very nice codpiece on it , which his dick was essentially metal if you looked at his armor .
Speaker 2You are a very weird man , you know weird shit . I know a lot of weird shit . I know you do . That's why we started this podcast to celebrate weird shit , Amen .
Speaker 1Okay . So how the fuck can we protect against this ? Oh , I know Go .
Speaker 2Don't I know , go , don't have sex .
Speaker 1No , no , that's not what I'm saying . That's not good advice . I'm not one of them . Bad Bad boy , bad boy .
Speaker 2Go sit in the corner and think about what you've just done . Someone spanked me . Look , I'm saying the bad . Just you know what Condoms Use condoms , use condoms , condoms , not that hard . Condoms are cheap if you , if you go to um sexual health clinic , they give them away for free could get some there , and you know what , if you've got latex allergy , there's all sorts of fucking different products on the market . There's no excuse . There is no , there's .
Speaker 1Like , especially with a new partner . If you're 5'6" 7'7" shags deep , sure have that conversation with your partner and say I don't want to use protection anymore . Should we both get tested ? Yeah , but if you're stopping condom use make sure that it's preceded by having a fucking test , right ? Yeah , we don't need to harp on the condoms .
Speaker 2Make sure that it's preceded by having a fucking test , right ?
Speaker 1Yeah , we don't need to harp on the condoms do we no , we don't no definitely not All right . Vaccinations , yes . Hpv , yes . Just get it done , you can be an anti-vaxxer whatever .
Speaker 2You can get vaccinations for also hep A and B . Yeah , vaccinations for A and B .
Speaker 1Yeah , vaccinations for those , yeah , yeah as well . Yep , get them fucking done . Yes , because imagine having a life that would be completely altered . Yeah , by sleeping with one person .
Speaker 2By one sexual experience .
Speaker 1I talked to one person on Insta last week who they had HIV and it completely fucked their whole life up .
Speaker 2Absolutely it would .
Speaker 1And that was probably just one instance . One little experience there's a dude that I follow on .
Speaker 2TikTok he literally . I think it was his first ever sexual experience he had . He got HIV .
Speaker 1And it can happen 19 years old . Like you said , you don't need to sleep with a lot of people to get it , you just need to sleep with the person who has it .
Speaker 2You sleep with one person and also the stigma here around people and also the stigma here around people . Don't shame other people . Back to our episode last week that either have tested positive for any of these diseases or viruses and bacterias , because at the end of the day , it doesn't mean that that person is sleeping around and has a lot of sexual partners or has risky sex . It could literally just be one person , because idiots out there are just not getting tested .
Speaker 1Yeah , that's right . Just get it fucking done . The stigma is there as well . The other thing I want to say in terms of safety avoid substance abuse .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1Because how many times have you been drunk and you've gone ? I'll just throw this condom on . Wait , I can't actually use my fingers , but I'm okay to use my dick ? Yep , let's not use it . Let's not use it because I just can't be bothered and I can't figure it out right now because I can't see the fucking condom . Exactly Right , but if you're in such a bad place where you can't get a condom on , you should probably , you probably shouldn't be using your dick , that's right maybe that's why nature just like decided it'd be a good idea to have whiskey dick exactly you'd motherfucking .
Speaker 2Try and don't use it . Trying to protect you , there you go nature ?
Speaker 1Yeah , I think it's . We've talked a heap as well about the stigmas around it , but I do want to talk about the stigma with education . A lot of education is all about well , primarily has been about body parts yes , about pregnancy and about diseases . That's what they do . But what they do is they sort of they give it out . This thing is if you get this , you're going to get it and nobody's going to like you , and then you're going to be fucked up forever .
Speaker 2You're going to be ostracized and shit like that .
Speaker 1That's right , but it's not the case . Like most of these that we've talked about . Have got cues , yes , so long as you get onto a cue quick and we're not sitting there saying that nobody's going to like you and they're going to have shag again . These are just normal things , like nobody gets stigmatized for having the flu .
Speaker 2Exactly , you get COVID , so what ?
Speaker 1That's right , covid , though .
Speaker 2COVID used to be bad .
Speaker 1At the start .
Speaker 2People were like blaming everyone . Oh , I got it because you did this . It's like , bro , do you blame someone when you get the fucking flu ?
Speaker 1It's fucked up , eh . Getting to COVID , though . Flu it's fucked up , hey . Getting to covid , though . I could never figure out why the fuck people were wearing masks when they were taking their dog for a walk outside with nobody else around . Are you gonna catch covid from the trees ? Apparently so the fuck is wrong with people don't get into that .
Speaker 2Don't get into into that . No , that's a rant . That's a rant .
Speaker 1But I think the final thing that I really want to talk about is the stigma in relationships . You're right , there is this thing where it's especially getting into a new relationship , people are like , oh , I don't really want to discuss that because they might think that I'm dirty or promiscuous or this or that you know , but essentially , if you don't have that conversation , you end up passing on something exactly because you haven't got tested , because you feel too ashamed to go and get tested you don't ask your partner .
Speaker 2Have they been tested ? Can you get tested ?
Speaker 1right , that's just going to lead your partner . Have they been tested ? Can you get tested ? Right ? That's just going to lead to so many more bad shit that we've already talked about .
Speaker 2I remember so my one and only quote-unquote relationship that I had . I remember the very first time I stayed over at his house and granted , let's just put a prefix that before this obviously I had slept with people before , but meet him dating for a few weeks , sleep over at his house and before we start he's like oh , have you been tested ? I've never experienced this in my life . Where we're ? We just about to start and you asking the question now and I was like , oh well , not recently . He's like , oh , when ? Well , when ? I was like , oh well , I don't know , like a month or two ago .
Speaker 2I was like , oh , okay , cool , well , I hope you understand I can until we get tested . And I sat there and I was like oh , it was the weird . And at the time I'm like fuck you . Like no , you don't make me sleep here . You could have asked me this yesterday or the day before so I could have get tested . But when I thought about it afterwards I'm like that's awesome , that is communication , that's what you're supposed to do . You ask a person and look , we didn't have penetrative sex . We did whatever else we could and we I still had a good time , but I appreciated the fact that he didn't want to get anything and also didn't want to pass anything over to me .
Speaker 2So the fact that he had the decency to have the conversation and say and ask the question look at the time , yes , I was feeling a little bit weird about it but but in hindsight I was like , well , it's actually pretty respectful .
Speaker 1I like that , and let's quickly go into how to have those conversations . How do we have those conversations , those hard-hitting conversations ? Hey , I want to talk about getting tested .
Speaker 2I want to talk about , you know , stisis I know what your advice is , but mine is just there is no way that it's going to come out not awkward , it's always going to be .
Speaker 1It's always going to be awkward , just to have the conversation yeah , it literally could be as simple as hey we're in a new relationship , just want to know , uh , when's the last time you've been tested ?
Speaker 2I've been tested two weeks ago , three weeks ago , whatever . Here's my results . Do you think we should go get tested again together so that we know we're all good ? Yeah , you can make it from your side , your point of view . I want to make sure that I'm keeping you safe , so I want to get tested . Is that something you want to do as well ?
Speaker 1I love that . I think as well . The other thing that people can do is pre-warn your partner about it . So send them a text . Hey , I don't want to drop this on you , but I think at some point in the next day or two next week we need to have a conversation about STI's . Yeah , all right , I'm just putting it there so that you can have a think about it . I just don't want to drop it on you because quite often if you turn around to your partner and say , hey , let's talk about STI's , there's all sorts of like thing . This person think I'm a hoe , like do I have this ?
Speaker 1and like people have to sort of psychologically prep themselves correct for a conversation like that , yeah , and really getting into a new relationship .
Speaker 2These days , you should be expecting that you should be expecting that and I think feel like now that the area that we're in , I don't think it's that awkward . I feel like most people will kind of understand and will be oh yeah cool no worries Makes sense . We should do that .
Speaker 1So yeah , just have a conversation . Yeah , the stigma is pretty much gone with it now , I think .
Speaker 2For the most part .
Speaker 1It's not like it used to be . People aren't getting crazy from anal itching exactly anal itching . My back's itchy right now . I know what's going on . It's a fistula , back fistula . It's even a thing we've got to . You heard it here first . Back syphilis is now . I think I like it . I think we've uh , we've successfully got some STIs .
Speaker 2I've got more for you . Oh , I'm not done yet . Oh , okay , because just because my what's going on laptop does not mean I'm forgetting what I want to say . You do you . So I've got one very important thing .
Speaker 1Yeah .
Speaker 2HIV .
Speaker 1Yes To talk about . I don't have HIV .
Speaker 2I'm going to talk about it . Hiv and AIDS yeah , Common misconceptions . First and foremost One HIV is different to AIDS . Aids is something that you get . When HIV is not treated , it then turns into AIDS . A person dies from AIDS .
Speaker 1Yes .
Speaker 2In the 80s and 90s . Obviously we all know about the aids epidemic . People were getting hiv . Once they got hiv , immune system is completely shot . They then get aids . Yeah , they die . Um , anyone can get aids . First thing I want to talk about is misconceptions that gay people get aids more than I mean mean get HIV more than straight people . Everybody's fucking getting it , everyone's getting it . That's absolute bullshit . So , number one , this idea that oh well , I mean the amount of times if I'm talking to one of my straight friends and they go , oh , and I'm talking about oh , yeah , you know , I met this dude yesterday .
Speaker 1Oh , I hope you use a condom .
Speaker 2I'm like why ? Why would you say it to me like that straight away ? Oh , because you have to worry about HIV . Did you use a condom when you met the person ? Oh no , so what ? Oh no , they're on the pill . So you only worry about babies . So you don't think that you can get HIV because you're straight . And this is the amount of times I've had this conversation is ridiculous .
Speaker 1Do you know what I think is happening a lot more now as well Is there is a definite blurring of sexuality that I don't think was quite so blurred back in the 70s , 80s , 90s Correct , 70s , 80s , 90s .
HIV Prevention and Precautions
Speaker 1If you were gay , you were gay . You slept with guys .
Speaker 2Yes , whether in the closet or not . In the closet , that was it . You slept with guys .
Speaker 1If you're hetero , you sleep with straight people . Now I think we've got so many different sort of identifying sexualities that people can sleep with a guy one week , a girl the next , a day the next .
Speaker 2There's not as much . That's what I'm looking for . Judgment there's not as much . Judgment .
Speaker 2Yeah , there's not , there's not , but what that is doing is that is taking infection throughout the whole demographic and this is the problem is that people just think that because I'm sleeping as a straight man , I'm sleeping with a woman , I can't get HIV . Or if I was a guy sleeping with guys , I didn't have to worry about it . Everyone has to worry about it , Of course . So HIV Right . How does he get it ? You can get it through bodily fluids , where that means anal vaginal sex .
Speaker 1Mucus membranes .
Speaker 2Mucus membranes Right anal vaginal sex mucus membranes . Look , you can't get it from kissing .
Speaker 2You'd have to kiss and swallow seven liters of someone's saliva before you can actually some people are into that this is true , but I don't think anyone's gonna have seven liters to give , so just remember that again , at the end of the day , another misconception when it comes to hiv is that , once you've got your life's over , end of the day , another misconception when it comes to hiv is that once you've got your life's over , yes , it is very . It would be the hardest thing to have to hear , but people are living normal , healthy , full lives with the right medication and they're living that as well .
Speaker 1So people with hiv are having full sexual relationships with people without hiv , correct ? They just need to change things up yep , so the thing is this right .
Speaker 2So another so important thing I want to talk about . Let's just say you go , you get tested . You find you have got it . You get your medication , your antiretrovirus , whatever the word is that that one , the blue pills , get them , you can be . So someone can have HIV , be on top of their medication and have a low viral load , which means they are not contagious . So they can have sex with no condom and not pass the disease on . So they haven't been cured .
Speaker 1Most of the hetero folks don't know this . They sit there and go HIV fuck . You're like exactly you come near me .
Speaker 2Yes , you look at me and I'm going to have HIV , so you can do Also . Even better , we're going to talk about something called PrEP .
Speaker 1Okay .
Speaker 2I want to get into this as well .
Speaker 1Yes , so .
Speaker 2PrEP is pre-exposure prophylaxis right . Big words , Big words .
Speaker 1Can't spell it , it's easier .
Speaker 2So PrEP ? Basically , let's just say you have a partner , your partner has HIV Yep , you want to make sure that you don't get it and you don't want to use condoms , for example . That person might have a low viral load , you're not going to get it , but you just want to be double sure . So you can take PrEP as a preemptive drug to not get HIV . So it has a 99% efficacy rate that you will not get the virus and essentially , you can sleep with your partner who has hiv , with a low viral load , and you will not get hiv . It's incredible .
Speaker 2Or for someone like myself , I take prep and I've been taking prep for years . So when I first heard about it , I went on a trial . So this is what I was talking about early in the episode where I had to get tested every three months . Okay , yep . So essentially you take the drug daily . It used to start out daily . Now it's a bit different . So you take it daily , go every three months and they ask you questions about what your sexual partners have been like . Where have you slept in one without any condoms ? They give you testing just to see , make sure that the that it works . So I've been on it for a few years now . I have had zero side effects at all , um , and yeah , it's been pretty good . The other ways of doing it are you can either take it daily or you can take it um , like two . If you know you're gonna have sex in an hour , take two tablets before have sex , take another tablet afterwards .
Speaker 1So you don't have to take it all the time .
Speaker 2You can take it on demand . I prefer not on demand because I will forget all the time .
Speaker 1Sometimes when you're having a bit of a drink . Exactly , I forgot my PrEP .
Speaker 2So PrEP is an amazing drug . There's also pep , which is post , uh , post , post , post something , prophylaxis anyway . My point is there's prep and pep . Prep is when you want to take it every day to prevent . Pep is what you take . So let's just say you go out at night , out you meet somebody , have sex , leave . They then go . Oh hey , just want to let you know I just found out today I have HIV .
Speaker 1So it's like the morning after pill for HIV .
Speaker 2So it's essentially the morning after pill for HIV , but you have to take it within 72 hours . So from that day you had sex you go straight to your gp or clinic . Yeah , they give you prep pep . Sorry , you take it for a certain amount of time . You then go back do testing to make sure you don't have it . So that's actually a way of yes , pretty much like an after a morning after pill for hiv , hiv .
Speaker 1That's incredible .
Speaker 2It is incredible . It is an amazing drug and the thing is the sad part is that the straight community does not know this actually exists .
Speaker 1Yeah , it's another sort of wonderful drug that you gay people are keeping to yourselves .
Speaker 2Every time I talk about this , fuck you .
Speaker 1Every time I talk about this straight people are always like oh my gosh , really .
Speaker 2Oh my God , I didn't know this was a thing like yeah , it is a thing .
Speaker 2So if you first of all get tested and unfortunately you have hiv , you can still live in the normal life . There are great ways out there and also you can prep yourself before so that you don't . So you're pretty much good . Now I want to talk about the negatives . Yeah , because I've heard a ton about this . So this is the problem . The problem is the problem is with prep . The problem is not with prep . The problem is with people taking prep . Is that it's always the people . Exactly now , there is a , especially in australia , in western australia , for example , let's say I don't have the exact numbers and statistics , but there is a huge rise in all the other diseases we spoke about , all the other infections we spoke about , like syphilis and gonorrhea and things . Why ? Because people are taking PrEP .
Speaker 1Because they're not worried about these things .
Speaker 2Because they're not worried about the worst thing , which is HIV . Yeah , they are tending to not use condoms , which means they are then getting all the other STIs , like gonorrhea , syphilis chlamydia .
Speaker 1Instead of basically trusting so much within the medical system , it's like , hey , even if I do get syphilis , I go to my doctor .
Speaker 2I get a shot , bang'm done I can , I can just go get a shot , I'll be fine , which okay , fine , but it still does not stop that spread around that's right the community . Because that means if I sleep with you and I don't give a shit , you sleep with 15 other people , those 15 other people , even if they only sleep with one person each , you've spread it to hundreds of people and then it spreads out , and then it spreads out and it gets worse yeah , so get tested .
Speaker 2Go out there . If you're on prep , use prep with condoms as well . Obviously , there might be a time where you're not going to want to use them . That's cool . At least you taken the prep . But try . And also , you know what ? Have the conversation with your peoples . Ask them hey , when's the last time you've been tested ? Are you don't ask people you clean . Ask them uh , have you been tested ? Are you all negative for everything ? Yeah , okay , cool , no worries , that's great , I'm on prep . Anyway , you can ask the question . I have people on on grinder all the time . Ask me hey , are you on prep ? Yes , I am . How long you've been on it for ? Oh , this long , cool , so then you know that that person is you are . At least you've . There's one thing you can get rid of , but well it's .
Speaker 1It's almost as though if you ask that question , they can give you honest , straight answers back . Exactly , it's like that person's taking care of their health .
Speaker 2Exactly , you know straight away . Okay , that person actually cares about the fact that they they care about their sexual health . Yeah , you know what I mean . So , like the likelihood is , if that person actually cares about the fact that they care about their sexual , health .
Speaker 1Yeah , you know what I mean . So , like the likelihood is if that person's caring about their sexual health the likelihood is they've sorted themselves out Exactly , which means that they're less likely to transmit anything to me because they've made the right decisions up front .
Speaker 2Now there's one sidebar that I definitely had to bring up . I was like , if I do not bring this up , I'm going to kick myself . What I had to bring up ? I was like , if I do not bring this up , I'm going to kick myself . So the stigma around the whole gay people get HIV yeah , that has bled from the 80s into now with things like oh , gay people are going to have more sex . So do you know what AIDS was called ? Before it was called AIDS ? It was called GRIDS . Do you know what GRIDS stands for ? Grids Gay Related Immunodeficiency Syndrome . So they believed that it was a gay disease because gay men were more promiscuous . And back then the flight attendants males were gay and they were flying all over the world having lots of sex , spreading it . So then it became this thing that was a gay disease .
Speaker 1Wait , flight attendants have lots of sex , apparently so .
Speaker 2Why don't they tell ?
Speaker 1you this when you're going through your career as counsellor ? I don't know ?
Speaker 2You see , this would have been so much better . You could have been one of those Fuck . So yeah unfortunately , people believe that it was , so it was synonymous with
Blood Donation Policies and STI Testing
Speaker 2being gay . Yeah , I know that there's many people that don't know this , but do you know that , as a gay man , I cannot give blood ?
Speaker 1Did you know , as an Englishman , I can't give blood either . Really , I have mad cow's disease .
Speaker 2No , I don't really , but yeah , yeah . Carry on , though It're a fucking bad cow , but yeah , as gay man , if so , I went . So I remember hearing this somewhere , like on a youtube channel , some american dude , and I was like , oh cool , I'm like , okay , cool , want to give blood ? Go to um red cross , I go give blood . They're like , yeah , lovely lady , cool when I give blood , go to Red Cross , I go give blood .
Speaker 1They're like yeah lovely lady .
Speaker 2She's like yeah , give me some of the forms and we can get you started . It's all lovely , coming in Wonderful . Fill out the forms . Name da-da-da-da-da . Questionnaire 20 questions . When's the last time you had a tattoo , da relations with another male in the past 12 months ? So I read this and I'm like , oh shit , is this a thing in australia too ? Funny part is , at the time I was celibate . I decided to be celibate and it was literally 11 and a half months that I had been celibate and I couldn't remember if it was 11 and a half or 12 . So so I was just doing the right thing and being like , oh , I'll be honest . Oh , just write , oh , no , no , and I'd explain to the lady . Next question Are you a female that has had sex with a male who has had sex with another male ? Yes or no ? So I filled everything out . She comes back in the room , lovely beautiful lady , reads everything . She's like , oh , yeah . And then her face just drops and I knew straight . I'm like , oh , fuck . And she goes oh , um , so what ? This question ?
Speaker 2and then I said , oh , it's been like 11 and a half months I haven't had sex and she's like oh , yeah , look , um , unfortunately we actually won't be able to give blood today , so you can come back in like three weeks , once it's been 12 months , and then you can give blood . Then let's just say that was a few years ago and I was like fuck this place , I am leaving Hell , fucking . No , every time I go into the shops there's a person there that's got a Red Cross booth . Oh , do you want to give money to them ? I'm like fuck you , if you can't take my pink blood , you ain't taking my pink fucking dollars you can't take my pink bits , Exactly so .
Speaker 2And where does that come from ? That comes from the AIDS epidemic in the 80s where the law was made that if you're gay , you can't give blood , because gay people have a higher risk of having AIDS or HIV , which is fucking ridiculous . Because don't you check the blood ?
Speaker 1Yeah , that was going to be my question . Don't they test the fucking blood before they give it to people ?
Speaker 2Apparently it doesn't matter , because if they have an influx of gay people coming it's going to cost them a lot of money to test that much blood where we know they probably have HIV . The funny part is I could quite easily have just said no , tick no on there and that's it . Or you , as a straight guy , has slept with 4 000 women , never gotten tested and gone . Oh , I'm going to think . Oh , no , I've never slept with a dude .
Speaker 2It's fine , I can give blood you gotta give blood , fine , but the thing that pisses me off the most is that you have all these statistics where you get on TV oh , only 1% of Australians give blood .
Speaker 1And I'm like that's because you stop .
Speaker 2Do you know ? There's a TikTok video where this lady is giving blood and saying how easy it is to give blood and I was like , oh , this is my moment . Went to the comments . They've disabled comments . Of course they have , because they know that someone will say shit like that .
Speaker 1Because the gays are going to get on their high horse and they don't want people to know that .
Speaker 2But I'm here to tell you straight people out there . Just remember that when somebody is what needs blood a rare blood , for example the reason why you ain't got it is because the gays can't give no blood Fuck .
Speaker 1Yeah , blood donation centers . Sort your shit out Rant over .
Speaker 2But the very last thing I want to talk about is where you can get tested .
Speaker 1Yeah , hit that up .
Speaker 2So , as a male who has sex with men or trans people or non-binary people , you can go to the M Clinic . So if you're in Perbinary people , you can go to the m clinic . So , if you're in perth , you can go to the m clinic . Just google m clinic . It's in the city , um , very casual , very non-judgmental place . They provide really good services . They do some sexual education . If you need be um , they check , do uh testing . If you want to get prep and you're thinking that's something you want to do , you can go there and talk to them . They have doctors and nurses there , um , and you can get tested for everything . So check out the m clinic . Yeah , um , just google . And yeah , go check them out . We'll put the link in the show notes . Yes , put in the link , the show notes . If you are anyone else , if you're a straight person , um , you can either go to your gp . There is Royal Perth Hospital as well .
Speaker 1And there's all sorts of other places like sexual health lines .
Speaker 2Yes , there's sexual health lines I'm just mentioning . For the gay and queer communities it's a little bit more difficult because you might not feel as comfortable talking to your GP and saying that you're gay . Look , they will ask you some fun questions . But it is in a very non-judgmental um environment and you I've I've been there many times and I've always felt really comfortable in going there . Yeah , um , and yeah , affordable as well there's also now online subscription services is it .
Speaker 1Yeah , so you can a package get sent out once a month , oh and you check it yourself you do yourself checks . You send off your samples back to the uh the organization , and there's a heap of different ones . Send off your samples back and they will keep in touch with you . There's like a doctor there that will be assigned to your case . And now just keep in touch with you so there's like , there's all sorts of stuff , like if you live remote or whatever there's no excuses anymore .
Speaker 2Exactly so , but either way , people , our takeaway here today is just get fucking tested get on it , get tested , have fun , talk .
Speaker 1Be safe . Be safe , use condoms . Use condoms . Prep , prep , prep . Hey , I said that's something you want to learn about , google it . But yeah , m clinic , be safe . Use condoms . Use condoms .
Speaker 2Prep , prep , prep . Hey , that's something you want to learn about . Google it . But yeah , mclinic , google it . Give them a call , Make an appointment , make it that this week is your week that you go out there and get tested people .
Speaker 1I like that .
