Sexual Health and Wellness

Speaker 1

All right , folks , it's your host , jordan Walker , here . Today we're diving into something super important that impacts every single one of us the body and sex . I know , I know it sounds deep , but don't worry , we're keeping it real casual because sexual health doesn't have to be complicated . So , whether you're a teen , guy , gal , other , or part of a neurodiverse community , I'm here to help you embrace your sexuality and level up your sexual game . It's all about feeling good in your body , building healthy relationships and understanding what works best for you and your partner . So let's dive right in First things first . Let's dive right in First things first .

Speaker 1

Sexual health is about so much more than just having sex . It's about the whole package , which includes how you feel about your body and your relationships . Sexual health isn't some standalone thing you tick off a checklist . It's an essential part of your overall health . You know those relationships that have a sexual or romantic component . Yeah well , they're pretty important in the grand scheme of things . There are studies out there , like the one from Beckerson and Friends , that remind us that sexuality and healthy sexual relationships hold a ton of value for both you and your partner . You see , it's not just about sex . It's about feeling connected , valued and respected . But here's the thing our overall general health . That plays a huge role in how we feel and function sexually . So if you're dealing with fatigue , stress or even just minor health issues , it can mess with your sexual mojo , if you know what I mean . And let's be real when you ignore these aspects of your health , it's like setting yourself up for a bad time . Your sexual desires , yeah well , they're probably gonna dip your body . That's gonna feel off and that can lead to physical and psychological stress . Nobody wants that .

Speaker 1

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room body image . It . It's everywhere , right Ads , social media , even conversations with friends . It's all about looking a certain way . So how do you feel about your body ? Be honest , if you're uncomfortable with your appearance , that's totally valid . But let's talk about what might help you feel more satisfied . Is it about changing your body or changing how you think about your body ? Here's a question . Have you ever been rejected by someone because they weren't into your body ? Maybe they weren't feeling your breast size , or maybe it was something about your genitals or penis size . That one stinks , but hey , have you ever been on the other side rejecting someone because they didn't meet your expectations ? We've all been there . But guess what ? It's a vicious cycle . So instead of focusing on what's wrong with someone's body , how about figuring out ways to help each other feel more comfortable and confident ? A little kindness , well , that can go a long way in a bedroom . Now let's move on to something that comes up a lot when we talk about sex Alcohol .

Speaker 1

Pop culture's got us believing that alcohol and sex go together like peanut butter and jelly , but that's not exactly true . Sure , a drink or two might loosen you up , but alcohol can mess with your sexual performance big time . For men , alcohol can make it hard pun intended to get or maintain an erection . It can also mess with your desire , making you either too eager or not interested at all . For women , alcohol can dry things up literally . Vaginal lubrication might be non-existent , and the physical sensations that make sex fun , yeah , those might be dulled . Not exactly a recipe for great sex , right . Here's where it gets serious , though . Heavy drinking can cause long-term issues like infertility and birth defects . So if you're planning a future family , alcohol , that might not be your friend . And let's not forget that alcohol is a huge factor in sexual violence , especially on college campuses . Some guys might use alcohol as an excuse to cross boundaries they wouldn't normally touch , thinking it'll make them more uninhibited . Spoiler alert it doesn't . It just makes things worse . And for women , being impaired can make it hard to communicate what they want or don't want , which can lead to situations that no one wants to be in .

Speaker 1

Next up , drugs . Look , I get it . People think certain drugs can enhance their sexual experiences , but here's the harsh truth Most recreational drugs , they do the exact opposite . Let's break it down . First off , amyl nitrate , aka poppers . Some people think poppers can intensify orgasms , and they totally can . But here's the deal they cause your blood vessels to dilate , which can lead to some weird side effects . We're talking dizziness , fainting and even burns if it touches your skin , as well as the possibility of some serious eye and neurological issues . You've got to ask yourself it really worth for a quick high . Then there's lsd and other psychedelics . You think they take you on a sexual trip , but not . They can actually cause painful erections , a condition called priapism . Trust me , you do not want to experience that .

Speaker 1

And what about coke ? You know cocaine ? Yeah , it's known for lowering inhibitions and making you feel great , but it also wrecks your sexual function . Over time it can make it nearly impossible to get or maintain an erection , or even orgasm . Guys who use cocaine regularly have lower sperm counts and sperm that doesn't work as well , and this isn't just for those snorting it . Smokers and injectors face the same issues . Basically , no matter how you're taking it , cocaine is a sex buzzkill .

Speaker 1

Now let's not forget about mdma , or you might know it as ecstasy . There's probably a whole heap of other names out there now . Sure , it makes you feel close to people and heightens your arousal , but it can also mess with your senses and make time feel like it's all over the place . Combine MDMA with Viagra and you've got a recipe for risky , unsafe sexual behavior . Plus , mdma can lead to dehydration , paranoia , even heart attacks . Bottom line drugs and sex don't mix as well as people think they do . Whoa , hang on there . If you're still with me , either you love this podcast or you're trapped under something heavy . Either way , share it . Share it with your friend , your dentist or even that weird guy at the gym who grunts way too loudly . Now back to the weirdness .

Speaker 1

Alright , shifting gears to a topic that often gets overlooked Sexuality and disability . Let's just clear something up right away People with disabilities have sexual needs and desires just like anyone else . Unfortunately , society often treats people with disabilities like they're less sexual or even completely non-sexual , and that , well , it's just plain fucking wrong . There's one big myth out there that sex only means sexual intercourse . That's simply not true . Sex is so much more than just a physical act . It's about connection , communication and intimacy . Another myth that sex is only for younger , able-bodied people Again , not true . Sexual expression is part of who we are , no matter our age or our physical abilities .

Sexual Health and Rights Awareness

Speaker 1

For people with disabilities , especially developmental disabilities , sex education is crucial . Why ? Because research shows that those with intellectual disabilities are three times more likely to be sexually abused than their peers . Education can help people protect themselves and understand their rights . Everyone has the right to sexual expression , privacy and access to the services they need , whether that's medical care or contraceptive counselling . But we also need to be realistic . Some people with severe disabilities might not be able to learn or practice safer sexual behaviours . That's where caregivers and healthcare providers come in . They have a responsibility to support individuals in understanding their bodies , their rights and their choices .

Speaker 1

Let's skip to chronic illnesses . Chronic illnesses like diabetes , cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease can seriously affect your sexual health . For example , diabetes can lead to erectile dysfunction in men and vaginal dryness in women , both of which can take a toll on your sexual self-esteem . Heart disease yeah , it can make you nervous about having sex because you don't want to trigger a heart attack or stroke . I know this . I had that Pfizer shot . Sex was well off the table . Anyways , there's chronic lung disease as well . This causes shortness of breath , coughing , wheezing these symptoms . They're really going to mess with your ability to enjoy sex . But here's the thing chronic illness doesn't mean the end of your sex life . It just means you might need to adjust your expectations and find new ways to connect with your partner .

Speaker 1

Let's not forget about people with developmental disabilities . These lifelong conditions affect mobility , learning and even the ability to live independently . But here's what's super important . Even people with developmental disabilities deserve to learn about their bodies , how to protect themselves and how to have healthy sexual relationships . Education can be a game changer in helping them navigate sexual health , consent and reproduction .

Speaker 1

In addition to education and care , it's vital to recognise that people with disabilities have specific sexual rights that are just as important as those of anyone else . Thanks to the disability rights movement , which is a global effort to break down barriers , individuals with disabilities are gaining more access to the opportunities they deserve . These rights include the rights to sexual expression Just because someone has a disability , it doesn't mean they don't have desires or the ability to express their sexuality . The right to privacy Everyone , regardless of ability , deserves privacy in their sexual and intimate lives . The right to be informed and have access to services People with disabilities should have the same access to contraception , medical care , sex counselling and genetic counselling as anyone else . Then there's a right to choose their marital status . Marriage is a personal choice and people with disabilities have the same right to make that decision . Finally , there's a right to decide whether or not to have children . Having or not having children is a significant life choice , and people with disabilities have every right to make that decision for themselves . This isn't just about advocating for rights on paper . It's about making sure these rights are respected and upheld in real life .

Speaker 1

Let's talk to dreaded big C Yep cancer . Cancer is a life-altering experience and its effects on sexuality are profound , whether it's prostate cancer , breast cancer or any other type . Both men and women face unique sexual health challenges during and after treatment . But here's the good news Even with cancer , sexual health can be managed and intimacy doesn't have to take a backseat . For females dealing with cancers like breast cancer , cervical dysplasia , ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer , the changes can be overwhelming . Whether it's losing breasts to surgery , dealing with changes in hormonal balance or just feeling less attractive , it's easy to lose confidence . Breast cancer survivors , for instance , often struggle with body image after mastectomy , but many regain their sexual confidence through open communication with a partner and seeking support from health professionals trained in sexual health after cancer . For men , cancer also brings its own set of challenges . Prostate cancer , one of the most common types of cancer among men , often leads to erectile dysfunction and changes in sexual desire . Testicular cancer , while less common , can also leave men feeling like their masculinity . Men often leads to erectile dysfunction and changes in sexual desire . Testicular cancer , while less common , can also leave men feeling like their masculinity is being compromised , especially if a testicle is removed . But just like for women , it's crucial for men to seek support , communicate with their partners and explore solutions , like treatments for ed , that can restore their sexual health .

Speaker 1

Let's shift gears and talk about something that sounds scary but is , thankfully , pretty rare Toxic shock syndrome TSS is a life-threatening condition caused by toxins produced by certain bacteria , mostly Staphylococcus . While anyone can develop TSS . About half of the cases happen in menstruating females and the rest can occur in people with burns or wounds . Here are the symptoms to look out for Sudden high fever , diarrhea , low blood pressure , severe rash and , in severe cases , shock or renal failure . If these symptoms sound familiar to you or you suspect DSS , get immediate medical attention . Prevention is always way better , so if you're using tampons , make sure to change them regularly to reduce your risk .

Speaker 1

Next up , vulvodynia , a condition that doesn't get nearly enough attention . This chronic pain or discomfort around the vulva can last for months or even years and what's frustrating ? There's no clear cause or even years . And what's frustrating , there's no clear cause . Imagine trying to enjoy sex or even just sit comfortably when every moment feels like burning or throbbing . That's what people with vulvodynia experience . Thankfully , there are treatment options . These include topical medications , pain relievers , antidepressants , anticonvulsants , biofeedback therapy , physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and , in some cases , surgery to remove the affected skin and tissue . If you or someone you know is dealing with vulvodynia , know that help is available . You don't have to suffer in silence .

Speaker 1

Endometriosis is another condition that affects a huge number of women , yet it's often misunderstood or overlooked . It happens when a lining of the uterus , the endometrium starts growing outside the uterus . This can cause intense pain , spotting and bleeding . It's estimated that 30-50% of women with endometriosis may also experience infertility , which can be heartbreaking for those wanting to start a family . But there's more Endometriosis can make sex painful , which understandably can put a strain on relationships . The good news is that treatment options like hormonal therapy and surgery can help manage the symptoms . Early detection and medical care can go a long way in improving the quality of life for women dealing with this condition .

Speaker 1

Polycystic ovary syndrome , pcos for short , is another condition that's incredibly common but not always easy to diagnose . This hormonal disorder is most often associated with irregular or prolonged periods , but it can also cause acne , excessive body hair and even difficulty with fertility . Pcos is caused by higher than usual levels of androgens . These are hormones typically thought of as male hormones , and they lead to various health complications . But PCOS doesn't just affect women's reproductive systems . It can also mess with their sexual health and their body image . Weight gain or hair growth in unexpected places can make women feel less attractive or confident , and when your self-esteem takes a hit , it's easy for your sexual desire to drop as well . But managing PCOS through lifestyle changes , medications and support from a healthcare provider can help get things back on track .

Speaker 1

Prostatitis is a condition involving swelling and inflammation of the prostate gland , and it's no walk in the park . It can cause pain in the groin , pelvic area or the genitals and make urination difficult and painful . There are four different types of prostatitis , and each one affects men differently . Some are bacterial , some are chronic , and one is asymptomatic and inflammatory . Men who have had surgery or trauma in the lower urinary tract or those with a history of urinary infections are at a higher risk of developing prostateitis . If left untreated , it can severely affect sexual health and quality of life . Like any other health issue , early diagnosis and treatment are the keys . Let's wrap things up At the end of the day , sexual health is a big part of our lives .

Speaker 1

It's tied to how we feel about ourselves , how we interact with our partners and how we navigate the world around us . From body image to chronic health issues , from disability to substance abuse . There are so many factors that influence our sexuality , and it's okay to talk about them , to seek help and to figure out what works for you . And it's okay to talk about them , to seek help and to figure out what works for you . So here are five key takeaways from today's episode that you can use in your sex life . Number one communicate openly about body image . Feeling insecure about your body is natural , but open communication with your partner that can ease some of those worries . Don't shy away from discussing body image concerns with your partner . It helps build intimacy , boost self-esteem and creates a safe space for you both to feel comfortable in your own skin .

Speaker 1

Number two prioritize your health for better sexual functioning . Good sexual health starts with overall health . Whether it's managing stress , getting enough sleep or staying active , your physical well-being directly impacts your sexual desire and performance . Take care of your body and it will take care of your sexual health . 3 . Avoid using drugs or alcohol as sexual lubricants . While alcohol and drugs might seem like an easy way to relax or lower inhibitions , they often lead to poor decision-making inhibitions . They often lead to poor decision making performance issues and regret . Have a little , but try to stay clear-headed and fully enjoy and control your sexual experiences . Consent and communication are best when all partners are sober and engaged .

Speaker 1

Number four acknowledge and respect the sexual rights of people with disabilities . Everyone , regardless of ability , deserves respect and access to sexual expression if you or your partner has a disability , know that sexual health and pleasure are still within reach . Be patient , explore alternative forms of intimacy and advocate for you and your partner's sexual health rights . Number five seek professional help for chronic conditions affecting your sexuality . If you're dealing with chronic conditions like endometriosis , pcos or prostate issues , don't hesitate to seek medical advice . Many treatments and therapies are available to manage the sexual side effects of these conditions , and improving your sexual health can have significant positive impact on your overall well-being .
