Hey everyone, and welcome back to Daily English! I’m so glad you’re here.

Today’s word is… finicky. Let’s say that together: finicky. One more time: fin-i-cky.

Here’s your clue: My cat will only eat her food if it’s warmed for exactly 11 seconds in the microwave. If it’s 12, she sniffs it and walks away.

🧠 What does “finicky” mean? Finicky describes someone who is hard to please, very particular, or overly picky about small details — often more than necessary. It can be used for people, animals, and even tasks or systems.

Examples: Every time her mother made dinner, Mia would push her plate away unless the vegetables were perfectly cut into little stars. She was a finicky eater, even at 6 years old.

  1. Josh lost sleep over the font on his presentation slides. “Arial is too boring, Calibri is too basic,” he muttered. His coworkers just rolled their eyes — Josh was so finicky when it came to design.

  2. The startup hired a new investor from New York. Within a week, everyone was stressed — he was finicky about grammar in emails, seating arrangements, and even the brand of water in the fridge.

  3.  Quick note: Finicky can sound a little judgmental if used about a person — so tone matters. It’s often said in a playful or exasperated way, not as a harsh insult.

Final reflection question: Are you finicky about anything in your daily life — maybe your coffee, your morning routine, or your music playlists? I'd love to hear it. Please share your messages, feedback and ideas using the gmail address provided.
