So what does “sounds about right” mean? “Sounds about right” means something seems correct or reasonable, even if you’re not completely sure.

It’s not 100% certainty — but it feels accurate. Let’s listen to some examples.

Someone says, “The meeting will probably take around an hour.”
 And you reply, “Yeah, that sounds about right.”

A friend tells you, “This restaurant is usually busy on weekends.” You nod and say, “That sounds about right.”

Or someone explains a situation, and based on what you know, you respond, “Sounds about right.”

It’s a very natural way to show agreement without being too strong or too formal.
