Hello and welcome to Daily English! As it’s the weekend, we learn English through stories. Don’t forget—the transcript is available through the link below.
Today’s story is about a woman who had surgery on her jaw, and afterward… she started speaking with a British accent. It shocked her family, her doctors—and it will probably blow your mind, too.
What Happened? In 2015, Lisa Alamia, a mom from Texas, underwent jaw surgery to fix an overbite. Everything seemed fine… until she started speaking differently.
Her Southern American accent was gone. In its place? A British accent—one she had never studied, practiced, or even tried to imitate. Her family was stunned. Her coworkers were confused. Even Lisa was surprised.
Doctors eventually diagnosed her with Foreign Accent Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that can cause sudden changes in speech. Her case went viral, and for good reason—it totally blew people’s minds!
