This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.

If someone does something “by the book,” it means they follow all the rules, policies, or procedures exactly—with no shortcuts or exceptions.
Examples:
1- Our accountant is extremely careful—she does everything by the book, down to the last cent.
2- I tried to renew my passport early, but the clerk refused. He said, ‘Sorry, we have to do this by the book.
Hello and welcome to Daily English! today’s expression is “by the book.” Once again: by the book. Can you guess what it means? Let’s try two quick hints: You’re driving with your very careful friend. They stop at every sign, drive exactly the speed limit, and never touch their phone. You might say, “Wow, you really drive by the book.”
A manager won’t let anyone leave even one minute early. Everything has to be done exactly as written. Yep—he’s doing things by the book.
So what does this expression mean? If someone does something “by the book,” it means they follow all the rules, policies, or procedures exactly—with no shortcuts or exceptions. They do things properly, officially, and carefully, often even when others might bend the rules a little.
Examples: "Our accountant is extremely careful—she does everything by the book, down to the last cent."
"I tried to renew my passport early, but the clerk refused. He said, ‘Sorry, we have to do this by the book.’"
"My little brother plays board games by the book—and gets mad if you even touch two cards at once."
This expression is sometimes a compliment—if someone is honest and careful. But sometimes it’s a little negative, if someone is too strict or inflexible.
