Hello and welcome to Daily English! As it’s Sunday, we learn English through stories. Don’t forget that the full transcript is linked below. Today’s story is about a young woman who showed true courage in the face of danger—Neerja Bhanot.
What Happened? In 1986, Neerja Bhanot, a 22-year-old flight attendant from India, was working on Pan Am Flight 73 when the plane was hijacked in Karachi by terrorists.
She quickly alerted the cockpit crew, who escaped through the roof, preventing the hijackers from flying the plane. For the next 17 terrifying hours, Neerja stayed calm. She hid passengers’ passports, especially those of Americans, so they wouldn’t be targeted. She comforted children and quietly organized help. When the terrorists opened fire, Neerja opened the emergency exits and started guiding people out. She had a chance to escape—but she didn’t. Instead, she stayed behind to help others. She was shot while shielding three children with her body. Because of her bravery, 359 passengers were saved. Neerja was honored with India’s highest award for bravery and is remembered as a true hero. Our phrase of the day is “Put your life on the line”To put your life on the line means to risk your life to protect someone or something important.
