Daily English Pod
Daily English Pod is a space for learning English beyond grammar and textbooks.
During the week, you’ll learn practical vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and real-life English, the language people actually use in everyday conversations, emotions, and work.
On weekends, we slow down. Through ideas from psychology, philosophy, and real human experience, we explore language as a way to better understand life, emotions, identity, and growth.
This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.
The goal is simple but meaningful: to help you understand English deeply, use it confidently, and connect it to your real life. English here is not just a skill. It’s a gentle companion for clearer thinking, honest expression, and deeper human connection.

Downhearted
means feeling sad, discouraged, or disappointed — especially after something doesn’t go the way you hoped. It’s not full-on heartbreak or deep depression… it’s that quiet heaviness you carry when you’re let down.
Examples:
1- She seemed downhearted after moving to Toronto and realizing how hard it was to make friends in a new country — especially during winter.
2- She was downhearted when she saw the news about her hometown. Even from another country, the weight of it stayed with her all day.
Hello and welcome back to Daily English! Today’s word is “downhearted.” One more time — downhearted. Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues:
Imagine you’ve studied hard for an important exam… but you don’t pass. You walk home slowly, staring at the ground, feeling heavy inside. You’re not angry — just quiet, low, and… downhearted. Or maybe your friend applied for a job she really wanted. She had her hopes up. But when she gets a rejection email, she sighs and says, “I really thought I had a chance.”
Her voice is soft. She sounds downhearted. So, what does downhearted mean?
It means feeling sad, discouraged, or disappointed — especially after something doesn’t go the way you hoped. It’s not full-on heartbreak or deep depression… it’s that quiet heaviness you carry when you’re let down. “She seemed downhearted after moving to Toronto and realizing how hard it was to make friends in a new country — especially during winter.”
“She was downhearted when she saw the news about her hometown. Even from another country, the weight of it stayed with her all day.”
“.Kwame felt downhearted when he missed the scholarship by just one point. His mother tried to smile for him, but he could see the sadness in her eyes too”
I hope none of you is feeling downhearted today. But if you are, please know — you don’t have to figure it all out at once. Some days are just for breathing and waiting for the weight to lift.
