Grounded

If someone is grounded, they are emotionally steady, calm, and sensible.
They don’t overreact, they stay connected to what really matters, and they’re not easily shaken by stress or pressure.

Examples:

1- Even after losing someone close, she somehow managed to stay grounded—she cried, she grieved, but she never lost herself

2- When anxiety takes over, I light a candle, put my phone away, and do one small thing at a time. That’s how I ground myself.

Hello and welcome back to Daily English! Today’s word is “grounded.”One more time—grounded.

Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues: Your friend just got some bad news, but instead of panicking, she takes a deep breath and says, “Okay. Let’s take this one step at a time.” She seems… grounded. Or imagine someone who doesn’t get carried away with drama or stress. They’re calm, realistic, and know what matters most. That person is grounded. So what does “grounded” mean?

If someone is grounded, they are emotionally steady, calm, and sensible.
They don’t overreact, they stay connected to what really matters, and they’re not easily shaken by stress or pressure. It’s often used as a compliment, especially for people who stay humble, focused, and emotionally balanced—even in chaos.

Examples: Even after losing someone close, she somehow managed to stay grounded—she cried, she grieved, but she never lost herself.”
2- After the divorce, he struggled for a while. But therapy, time in nature, and support from close friends helped him feel grounded again.

3- When anxiety takes over, I light a candle, put my phone away, and do one small thing at a time. That’s how I ground myself.

Quick note: “Grounded” can also mean being punished (like “My parents grounded me”), but today we’re focusing on the emotional and positive meaning — someone who is calm, centered, and steady.

Your Turn!
Do you know someone who seems grounded, no matter what?
Or have you ever had to ground yourself when life felt too overwhelming?
