Tone-deaf
If you say someone is tone-deaf, you mean they are insensitive to the situation, mood, or emotions of others.
They fail to read the room — and their words or actions feel awkward, inappropriate, or even offensive.
Examples:
1- After hundreds of job cuts, the company sent out “We’re Growing!” emails — and it felt completely tone-deaf.
2- At her friend’s breakup dinner, she brought her fiancé and talked about wedding plans. No one said anything, but it was so tone-deaf.
Hello and welcome back to Daily English — Today’s word is: tone-deaf.
Say it with me: tone-deaf. Let’s try to guess the meaning from a few clues:
🎤 Your friend sings karaoke and is completely off-key, but keeps going proudly.
🎓 A university sends out “exam success” balloons the same day students are protesting tuition hikes.
🏛️ A politician tweets about their vacation while a natural disaster hits their country. So, what does tone-deaf mean?
Literally, someone who is tone-deaf can’t hear or reproduce musical tones accurately.
But today, we’re focusing on the more common figurative meaning: If you say someone is tone-deaf, you mean they are insensitive to the situation, mood, or emotions of others.
They fail to read the room — and their words or actions feel awkward, inappropriate, or even offensive. You know the other day I came across a short in which a youtuber was showing off saying that a vacation costs her only a couple of stories and a short video. To me, and probably many other people, that was obviously tone deaf.
Examples: After hundreds of job cuts, the company sent out “We’re Growing!” emails — and it felt completely tone-deaf.
At her friend’s breakup dinner, she brought her fiancé and talked about wedding plans. No one said anything, but it was so tone-deaf.
The brand launched a cheerful ad campaign during a national crisis — it was so tone-deaf, they had to apologize publicly.
Your Turn Have you ever witnessed a tone-deaf moment? Or maybe said something yourself and only later realized it wasn’t the right time?
