Examples

2- She posted a picture in a swimsuit, and of course, the pearl-clutchers showed up in the comments section.

Hello and welcome back to Daily English —Today’s expression is: “pearl-clutching.”
Say it with me: pearl-clutching. Let’s see if you can guess what it means from these clues:

A politician wears ripped jeans instead of a suit, and suddenly social media is full of shocked comments. People are pearl-clutching like it’s the end of the world.

A movie includes one romantic kiss — and a viewer gasps, covers their mouth, and says, “How inappropriate!”  Yep… classic pearl-clutching.

What does “pearl-clutching” mean? “Pearl-clutching” refers to someone who reacts with fake shock or exaggerated moral outrage — usually at something that isn’t really that shocking. It comes from the old-fashioned image of someone clutching their pearls in surprise or horror. Today, we use it to describe people who act overly dramatic or judgmental about things like fashion, music, social change, or even jokes. It’s often used in a sarcastic or critical way to point out how someone is being too sensitive or stuck in the past.

Examples: When the comedian made a bold joke, there was some pearl-clutching in the audience, but most people laughed.
