Toss and turn
If you toss and turn, it means you can’t sleep because you keep moving around in bed, usually because of stress, worry, discomfort, or excitement.
Examples:
1- Nina had a big job interview the next morning. She kept tossing and turning all night, going over every possible question they might ask. When she finally fell asleep, her alarm went off.
2- Before their first flight together, Lucía was so excited about the trip to Greece that she barely slept. She tossed and turned in bed, imagining the blue rooftops and white beaches.
Hello and welcome back to Dailly English. Today’s phrasal verb is toss and turn. One more time: toss and turn. Have you ever had a night where you just couldn’t fall asleep, no matter how tired you were? You’re lying in bed, the room is quiet, but your mind is racing — you roll over, change positions, flip the pillow... nothing works. That is exactly what today’s phrasal verb describes.
Meaning:
If you toss and turn, it means you can’t sleep because you keep moving around in bed, usually because of stress, worry, discomfort, or excitement. Now let’s look at some example situations — all based on real, emotional moments that many of us can relate to.
Example 1: Nina had a big job interview the next morning. She kept tossing and turning all night, going over every possible question they might ask. When she finally fell asleep, her alarm went off.
Example 2: After the argument with his best friend, Amir couldn't stop thinking about what he should’ve said. He tossed and turned for hours, replaying the fight in his head.
Example 3: Before their first flight together, Lucía was so excited about the trip to Greece that she barely slept. She tossed and turned in bed, imagining the blue rooftops and white beaches.
This phrasal verb captures that frustrating feeling — when your body is tired, but your brain won’t let you rest. It’s common, relatable, and super natural in English conversations.
Quick note on pronunciation: Listen carefully to how native speakers connect the words:
toss’n’turn — often pronounced quickly and smoothly, like one word in fast speech.
When was the last time you tossed and turned all night? Was it because of stress, excitement, or maybe something else?
