Half-hearted
means doing something without real effort, energy, or enthusiasm. It’s when your body is there, but your heart isn’t really in it.
Examples:
1- He gave a half-hearted smile, like he didn’t really mean it.
2- She made a half-hearted attempt to clean her room before her guests arrived.
Hello and welcome back! Today’s word is half-hearted. Let’s see if you can guess what it means from some clues.
Imagine a student who says they’ll study for an exam but only looks at their notes for five minutes, scrolling on their phone the rest of the time. That’s a half-hearted effort.
Or think of someone who says yes to joining a protest, but when the day comes, they walk slowly, don’t chant, and leave early. That’s pretty half-hearted.
Even in relationships—if someone says “I love you” but never shows care or commitment, it feels half-hearted.
Definition: Half-hearted means doing something without real effort, energy, or enthusiasm. It’s when your body is there, but your heart isn’t really in it.
More Examples: The applause was half-hearted—just a few weak claps.
He gave a half-hearted smile, like he didn’t really mean it.
She made a half-hearted attempt to clean her room before her guests arrived.
Fun Fact The word is old, dating back to the 16th century, and literally means “with only half your heart.”
Now think about yourself: Have you ever done something in a half-hearted way, maybe a project at work, a chore at home, or even a friendship? Why do you think you weren’t fully invested?
