Hello and welcome to Daily English, as it’s the weekend, we learn English through real stories. The full transcript is in the description. Today’s story is about someone who truly lit the way — Florence Nightingale.

What Happened? In the 1850s, during the Crimean War, wounded soldiers lay in filthy, overcrowded hospitals. Most people had given up hope. But Florence Nightingale, a determined nurse, refused to accept that.

Every night, she walked through the dark hospital holding a lamp, checking on patients, cleaning wounds, and bringing comfort. The soldiers called her “the Lady with the Lamp.”

Her work didn’t just heal bodies — it lit the way for modern nursing and for treating patients with dignity.

Idiom of the Day: Light the way. To light the way means: To guide, inspire, or make things clearer for others.

Examples: Florence Nightingale’s care lit the way for modern medicine.
A great teacher can light the way for their students.
Acts of courage can light the way in times of crisis.
Innovation lights the way for future generations.
