Outlier

is something that is very different from the rest of a group — something that doesn’t follow the usual pattern. It can be a number, a person, or even a life situation.

Examples:

1- Most people in his family were quiet and reserved. But he was loud, expressive, and loved being around people. In many ways, he felt like the outlier in the family.

2- Sometimes in life, we compare ourselves to people who are outliers — the rare success stories that seem to break every rule. But an outlier is not the average. It’s the exception.

Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s word is thoughtful, a little analytical, but very useful. It’s “outlier.”

One more time: “outlier.”

In a group of numbers, one result was much higher than all the others. While most scores were around seventy or eighty, one student got one hundred. The teacher looked at the results and said, “That one is an outlier.”

So what does “outlier” mean? An outlier is something that is very different from the rest of a group — something that doesn’t follow the usual pattern.

It can be a number, a person, or even a life situation. Let’s listen to some examples:

Most people in his family were quiet and reserved. But he was loud, expressive, and loved being around people. In many ways, he felt like the outlier in the family.

Most startups struggle in their early years. But occasionally, one company becomes extremely successful very quickly. That company is often called an outlier.

Sometimes in life, we compare ourselves to people who are outliers — the rare success stories that seem to break every rule. But an outlier is not the average. It’s the exception.

And remembering that can sometimes help us be kinder to ourselves. Now it’s your turn:
Have you ever felt like an outlier in a group or situation?

Thanks for listening to Daily English. Have a thoughtful day, and see you tomorrow.
