A clear example of a norm cascade is the change in attitudes toward mental health. For many years, people struggled privately and avoided talking about it. Then, as more people began sharing their experiences, others realized they were not alone.

Hello and welcome to a weekend episode of Daily English — where we try to grow, in English and in life.

Today I want to talk about something interesting about social change. Sometimes, change feels very slow. And then suddenly — it feels like everything shifts at once.

Psychology and sociology have a name for this.It’s called a norm cascade.

A norm cascade happens when a belief or behavior that was once rare suddenly becomes widely accepted.

Not gradually. But quickly. Almost unexpectedly.

For a long time, many people may privately think: “This doesn’t feel right.” “I don’t fully agree.”

But they stay quiet. Because they believe their opinion is unpopular.

Then something changes. A few people speak up. Others realize they are not alone. And that realization spreads. What was once silent becomes visible.

And once it becomes visible, it becomes acceptable. This is how norms shift.

Not only because people change their minds — but because they realize how many others were already thinking the same way.

A clear example of a norm cascade is the change in attitudes toward mental health. For many years, people struggled privately and avoided talking about it. Then, as more people began sharing their experiences, others realized they were not alone.

What was once hidden became widely accepted.

Researchers in social behavior have shown that once a certain threshold is reached,
 change accelerates/ change speeds up. People who were hesitant before suddenly feel safe to express themselves. And what seemed stable can change very quickly.

This applies to many areas of life. Social attitudes. Cultural practices. Workplace norms. Even everyday behaviors.

So this weekend, you might reflect on something simple. What ideas around you feel “fixed” —
 but might actually be more fragile than they appear?

And where might people be waiting for someone else to speak first? Because sometimes change does not begin with a majority. It begins with visibility.
