Daily English Pod
Daily English Pod is a space for learning English beyond grammar and textbooks.
During the week, you’ll learn practical vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and real-life English, the language people actually use in everyday conversations, emotions, and work.
On weekends, we slow down. Through ideas from psychology, philosophy, and real human experience, we explore language as a way to better understand life, emotions, identity, and growth.
This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.
The goal is simple but meaningful: to help you understand English deeply, use it confidently, and connect it to your real life. English here is not just a skill. It’s a gentle companion for clearer thinking, honest expression, and deeper human connection.

I can't put my finger on it
Examples:
"I can't put my finger on it" means "I can't identify or explain something exactly, even though I know it's there."
1- I wasn't happy in that job, but I couldn't put my finger on the reason.
2- The movie wasn't bad. I just couldn't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy it.
Have you ever had a feeling that something wasn't quite right… but you couldn't explain why?
Maybe it was a conversation. Maybe it was a decision. Maybe it was a place, a situation, or even a feeling. Nothing seemed obviously wrong.
And yet… something felt different. Something felt off. But you couldn't identify exactly what it was. And that's exactly where today's expression comes in:
"I can't put my finger on it." Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today's expression is natural, common, and incredibly useful in everyday English: "I can't put my finger on it."
One more time: I can't put my finger on it. "I can't put my finger on it" means "I can't identify or explain something exactly, even though I know it's there."
You sense it. You notice it. But you can't clearly describe it. Let's look at a relatable example. Imagine you return to a café you used to love. The coffee is the same. The furniture is the same.
The menu hasn't changed. But somehow, the atmosphere feels different. A friend asks: "What's wrong?" And you reply:"Honestly, I can't put my finger on it."
Imagine meeting someone you've known for years. The conversation is perfectly polite.
Nothing unusual is said. But afterward, you keep thinking: "I don't know... I can't put my finger on it, but something felt different."
This expression is very common because many experiences in life are subtle. Not everything can be measured or explained immediately.
For example: "I wasn't happy in that job, but I couldn't put my finger on the reason."
Or: "The movie wasn't bad. I just couldn't put my finger on why I didn't enjoy it." And this expression reflects something interesting about being human.
We often expect ourselves to have clear answers. To know exactly why we feel what we feel. But sometimes understanding arrives slowly. Sometimes we notice something emotionally before we understand it intellectually.
And that's okay. Not every feeling comes with an explanation attached. Sometimes clarity needs a little time. Now it's your turn: Have you ever experienced something that felt strange, uncomfortable, or different—but you simply couldn't put your finger on it? Thanks for listening to Daily English. Take care and see you tomorrow.
