Off the top of my head

It means: Without thinking very carefully or checking information. You’re giving an answer based on what immediately comes to mind.

Examples:

1- I don’t remember exactly, but off the top of my head, I think the meeting is on Thursday.

2- Off the top of my head, I can think of three good podcasts.

Have you ever been asked a question and thought, “Give me a second… I know the answer, but I need to think”? Maybe someone asks: “What’s your favorite movie?”

Or: “Can you recommend a good restaurant?” And your first response is:

“Off the top of my head, I’d say…” Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is:  Off the top of my head.

It means: Without thinking very carefully or checking information. You’re giving an answer based on what immediately comes to mind.

For example: “Off the top of my head, I can think of three good podcasts.”

Or: “I don’t remember exactly, but off the top of my head, I think the meeting is on Thursday.”

This expression is useful because we don’t always have perfect answers. Sometimes the best we can offer is our first thought.

 Now it’s your turn:

What’s a good book you’ve read recently? Off the top of your head.
