Daily English Pod
Daily English Pod is a space for learning English beyond grammar and textbooks.
During the week, you’ll learn practical vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and real-life English, the language people actually use in everyday conversations, emotions, and work.
On weekends, we slow down. Through ideas from psychology, philosophy, and real human experience, we explore language as a way to better understand life, emotions, identity, and growth.
This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.
The goal is simple but meaningful: to help you understand English deeply, use it confidently, and connect it to your real life. English here is not just a skill. It’s a gentle companion for clearer thinking, honest expression, and deeper human connection.

Not gonna lie
It simply means: To be honest. Or: I’m about to say something truthful, personal, or perhaps a little unexpected.
Examples:
1- Not gonna lie, I was really nervous at the beginning.
2- Not gonna lie, that was much better than I expected.
Sometimes we say things because they’re polite. Sometimes we say things because they’re expected. And sometimes… we say something because it’s simply true.
Like: “Not gonna lie, I was really nervous.” Or: “Not gonna lie, I needed that vacation.”
And that’s exactly where today’s expression comes in: Not gonna lie.
Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is one you’ll hear all the time in movies, podcasts, YouTube videos, and everyday conversations:
Not gonna lie. It simply means: To be honest. Or: I’m about to say something truthful, personal, or perhaps a little unexpected. Let’s look at some examples.
Imagine you’ve just finished giving a presentation at work or in class. Your friend asks: “How did it go?” You smile and say:
“Not gonna lie, I was really nervous at the beginning.”
Or imagine you’ve had an exhausting week full of work and responsibilities. Friday evening arrives, and as you sit down on the couch, you think:
“Not gonna lie, I needed this weekend.”
Or perhaps you’re watching a movie that everyone recommended. You weren’t expecting much, but by the end you’re pleasantly surprised.
You turn to your friend and say:
“Not gonna lie, that was much better than I expected.”
This expression is so common because conversations feel more genuine when people are honest.
It’s a small way of saying:
“Here’s what I really think.”
Now it’s your turn:
Finish this sentence:
“Not gonna lie, I…”
Thank you for spending a few minutes of your day with me. Have a beautiful day and see you tomorrow.
