I never got around to

It means: I intended to do something, but I never found the time or opportunity to do it. Importantly, this expression usually doesn’t imply laziness. Life simply got in the way.

Examples:

1- I never got around to reading it.

2- I’ve been meaning to watch it, but I never got around to it.

A few episodes ago, we talked about the expression:

“I’ve been meaning to…” Those things we genuinely want to do… the friend we’ve been meaning to call, the book we’ve been meaning to read, the hobby we’ve been meaning to start.

But sometimes, weeks pass. Or months. And somehow, it still doesn’t happen.

And that’s exactly where today’s expression comes in:  “I never got around to…”

Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is one of the most useful and natural expressions in spoken English:

I never got around to… One more time: I never got around to… It means: I intended to do something, but I never found the time or opportunity to do it. Importantly, this expression usually doesn’t imply laziness. Life simply got in the way.

Let’s look at some examples. Imagine your friend asks:

“Did you watch that documentary I recommended?” You wanted to. You fully intended to.

But work got busy, life happened, and somehow you never did. You might say: “I’ve been meaning to watch it, but I never got around to it.”

Or imagine you’re talking to a friend and they ask: “Did you ever call your old teacher?”

You pause and realize that although you thought about it many times, you never actually made the call.

You could say: “No, unfortunately I never got around to it.” Or perhaps you’ve had a book sitting on your shelf for two years.

Every few months you look at it and think: “I should really read that.” But somehow, you still haven’t opened it. Again:

“I never got around to reading it.” This expression is so common because adult life is full of good intentions.

Things we want to do. People we want to call. Places we want to visit. Projects we want to start.

Sometimes the problem isn’t motivation.

Sometimes life simply fills itself up faster than we expect.

 Now it’s your turn:

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do but never quite got around to?
