Daily English Pod
Daily English Pod is a space for learning English beyond grammar and textbooks.
During the week, you’ll learn practical vocabulary, expressions, idioms, and real-life English, the language people actually use in everyday conversations, emotions, and work.
On weekends, we slow down. Through ideas from psychology, philosophy, and real human experience, we explore language as a way to better understand life, emotions, identity, and growth.
This podcast is created by Jale, an English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Canada, who teaches with patience, clarity, and care, and believes learning works best when students feel seen, respected, and safe to think aloud.
The goal is simple but meaningful: to help you understand English deeply, use it confidently, and connect it to your real life. English here is not just a skill. It’s a gentle companion for clearer thinking, honest expression, and deeper human connection.

As we speak
It means: At this very moment. Right now.
Example:
Imagine you’re waiting for an important package.
A friend asks: “Has it been shipped yet?” You check the tracking information and reply:
“Yes, it’s on its way as we speak.” Meaning: It’s travelling right now.
Have you ever stopped to think about what is happening in the world right now?
Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Right now.
Someone is boarding a plane. Someone is having breakfast. Someone is starting a new job.
Someone is finishing a long day. And that’s exactly where today’s expression comes in:
As we speak.
Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English. Today’s expression is common, vivid, and very useful in conversation:
As we speak. One more time: As we speak.
It means: At this very moment. Right now.
Usually, we use it to emphasize that something is happening at the exact time we are talking.
Let’s look at some examples. Imagine you’re waiting for an important package.
A friend asks: “Has it been shipped yet?” You check the tracking information and reply:
“Yes, it’s on its way as we speak.” Meaning: It’s travelling right now. Or imagine your colleague asks about a report that your manager requested.
You smile and say: “I’m working on it as we speak.” In other words:
I’m doing it at this very moment. Or imagine your friend is worried about a family member who is traveling. You receive a message and say:
“Don’t worry. She’s landing at the airport as we speak.” Again: It’s happening right now.
This expression is common because it makes what we’re saying feel immediate and alive.
Not something in the past. Not something in the future. Something unfolding right now.
Now it’s your turn: What’s happening in your life as we speak? Maybe you’re commuting.
Cooking dinner. Going for a walk. Or perhaps you’re learning English through this podcast.
BTW, if you’d like to revisit today’s expression, you’ll find the free transcript linked in the description below.
Thank you for being here today.
And let’s remember: Life isn’t only happening someday. A great deal of it is happening quietly…
as we speak. Take care and See you tomorrow.
