A labour of love

Something you do because you genuinely love it, even though it requires a lot of time, effort, or hard work.

Example:

Imagine someone spends months restoring an old family house.

Painting walls. Fixing furniture. Working every weekend.

Not because they’re being paid to do it, but because the place means something to them.

You could say: “Restoring the house was a labor of love.”

A Labor of Love

Some things in life don’t make sense on paper.

They take time. They take energy. Sometimes they take far more effort than they’re worth financially.

And yet… we keep doing them.

Because some things are not driven by profit or obligation. They’re driven by care.

And that’s exactly where today’s expression comes in:

A labor of love. Hi everyone, and welcome to Daily English.

Today’s expression is beautiful, meaningful, and surprisingly common:

A labor of love. One more time: A labor of love.

It means: Something you do because you genuinely love it, even though it requires a lot of time, effort, or hard work.

Let’s look at some examples. Imagine someone spends months restoring an old family house.

Painting walls. Fixing furniture. Working every weekend.

Not because they’re being paid to do it, but because the place means something to them.

You could say: “Restoring the house was a labor of love.”

Or imagine your grandmother spending hours preparing a meal for a family gathering.

Cooking. Baking. Preparing everything carefully. Again:

“The whole meal was a labor of love.” Or imagine someone creating podcast episodes regularly for years.

Planning topics. Writing scripts. Recording and editing. Not because they have to.

But because helping people learn brings them joy. That too can be: a labor of love.

This expression is beautiful because it reminds us that not everything valuable can be measured in money or efficiency.

Some things are worth doing simply because they matter to us.

Because they bring meaning.

Because they help someone.

Because we care.

📍 Now it’s your turn:

What’s a labor of love in your life?

A hobby?

A project?

Cooking?

Gardening?

Helping others?

Thank you for being here with me today.  And let’s remember:

The things we do out of love often ask the most from us… and give us the most in return.

Take care and see you tomorrow.
