Truth be told

It means: “To be honest.” “If I’m being completely honest.”

Example:

Imagine a friend asks, “Do you enjoy working from home?” You think for a moment and reply,

“Truth be told, I miss seeing people every day.” You aren’t just giving a polite answer. You’re sharing how you genuinely feel.

Have you ever given the polite answer…

instead of the honest one?

Someone asks if you’re enjoying a movie.

You smile and say,

“Yeah, it’s pretty good.”

But deep down…

you’re counting the minutes until it’s over.

Sometimes, we decide it’s finally time to be completely honest.

And that’s exactly where today’s expression comes in.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Daily English.

Today’s expression is:

Truth be told.

One more time:

Truth be told.

It means:

“To be honest.” “If I’m being completely honest.”

It often introduces a sincere opinion, confession, or realization. Let’s look at some examples.

Example 1 Imagine a friend asks,

“Do you enjoy working from home?” You think for a moment and reply,

“Truth be told, I miss seeing people every day.” You aren’t just giving a polite answer.

You’re sharing how you genuinely feel.

Example 2

Imagine someone compliments your presentation and says,

“You looked so confident!”

You laugh and answer,

“Truth be told, I was incredibly nervous.”

Your appearance and your feelings were very different.

Example 3

Imagine your friend asks,

“Do you think you’ll ever stop learning English?”

You smile and say,

“Truth be told, I don’t think I’ll ever want to stop learning.”

Learning has become part of who you are.

One reason I love this expression is that it creates honesty.

It tells the listener,

“I’m about to say something real.”

In a world where we often give automatic answers…

“I’m fine.”

“Everything’s great.”

“No problem.”

it’s refreshing to hear someone begin with,

“Truth be told…”

Because that’s usually where the most meaningful conversations begin.

 Now it’s your turn.

Complete this sentence:

“Truth be told…”

Maybe you’ve been putting something off.

Maybe you’ve changed your mind about something.

Or maybe you’ve discovered something about yourself.
