We’re living in a trust recession. Potential clients have heard all the promises, they’ve invested in the courses, and many have worked with coaches who didn’t deliver. They’re not just skeptical anymore—they’re cynical. But here’s the thing: If you know how to master the art of story selling, you can break through that wall of distrust. In today’s episode, I’m going to show you exactly how to combine your origin story with your conversion story to build unshakable trust with potential clients—and ultimately inspire them to enroll in your coaching program. Plus, I’ll share how my own story took me from the edge of losing everything to building a 7-figure lifestyle coaching business.
Welcome to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast, where we help passionate coaches like you scale to $250k and beyond, while creating the kind of business that gives you the freedom to live a life you love. I’m Travis Greenlee, your host and today we’re diving into one of the most important topics in coaching today: how to break through the trust recession.
Here’s what I mean by that. Right now, we’re living in a world where people are burned out from over-promising, under-delivering programs. They’ve been there, done that, bought the course, and still feel stuck. So when they come across yet another coach claiming to have the solution, their first reaction isn’t excitement—it’s cynicism. They’ve invested time and money in coaches before, and they’re left feeling let down, frustrated, and even a little bitter.
This makes attracting and enrolling clients more difficult than ever. You’re no longer just selling your service—you’re competing with every past disappointment your client has experienced. They don’t just need to hear what you can do; they need to feel it. They need to believe, deep down, that you understand their struggles and that you can actually help them get to where they want to be.
That’s where story selling comes in. By sharing your origin story—the personal journey that brought you to coaching—and your conversion story—the real results you’ve helped your clients achieve—you’re not just talking about your expertise, you’re showing it. You’re creating an emotional connection that cuts through their cynicism and builds real, lasting trust.
Today, we’re going deep into how to craft both your origin story and your conversion story in a way that builds an unshakable bond of trust with your audience. I’ll also be sharing my own story—how I nearly lost everything during the 2008 recession, and how mastering the power of story selling helped me rebuild my business into a thriving 7-figure enterprise. And, we’ll hear about clients like Jim, Joel, and Lisa, who used this same approach to transform their businesses.
By the end of this episode, you’ll have a roadmap for using your story to attract clients who are excited to work with you and grow your business in a way that feels authentic and aligned.
Let’s start with my own story because it’s the perfect example of how an origin story can build trust in even the toughest market conditions. I’ve been a coach for over 25 years, and in that time, I’ve experienced incredible highs. But I’ve also experienced some of the lowest lows—especially during the 2008 recession.
Back in 2008, I had built what I thought was an unshakable 7-figure business. My calendar was packed with clients I loved working with. I was living the dream—skiing over 100 days a year, taking trips to Maui with my wife, and enjoying the personal and financial freedom that comes with a successful lifestyle business.
But when the recession hit, everything changed. Almost overnight, I went from being fully booked with a waitlist of clients to an empty calendar. My business crumbled. I can still remember the sleepless nights, my wife in tears, wondering how we were going to keep things afloat. It felt like everything I had worked for was slipping away, and I didn’t know what to do next.
Here’s the key: In that moment, I could have given up. I could have gone back to working for someone else. But deep down, I knew that I loved the freedom of my business too much to let it go. I knew I had to find a way to rebuild—but smarter this time. That’s when I started to study the top leaders in the industry, and I realized that I needed to shift how I ran my business. I couldn’t rely on one-on-one clients anymore. I needed systems. I needed automation. And I needed a clear, compelling way to communicate my value.
That was the turning point. I rebuilt my business from the ground up, focusing on creating a freedom-based model that allowed me to scale without burning out. And I didn’t just rebuild for myself—I created a framework that has now helped hundreds of coaches grow their own businesses to six and seven figures.
The reason I’m sharing this with you is because my origin story isn’t just about success—it’s about struggle. It’s about being real, raw, and honest about the obstacles I faced and the lessons I learned. And that’s what connects with clients on a deep level. When potential clients hear my story, they know I’ve been where they are. They trust that I can help them because I’ve faced the same challenges.
That’s the power of an origin story. It’s not just about your achievements—it’s about showing potential clients that you understand their struggles and that you’ve overcome them. This level of vulnerability breaks through the cynicism we see in today’s market and builds real trust.
Let me tell you about one of my clients, Jim. Jim came to me feeling totally overwhelmed. He was a passionate coach, but despite all his hard work, he wasn’t attracting clients consistently. He had been hustling for years, but he felt like he was just spinning his wheels.
Jim’s origin story was simple, but it was powerful. He shared how he had burned himself out trying to do everything—marketing, coaching, administration—but it wasn’t working. His story was clear and concise: Jim loved coaching, but he was exhausted, frustrated, and on the verge of giving up.
When Jim started sharing that story with his audience, everything changed. His potential clients saw themselves in his story. They related to his burnout, his frustration, and his desire for a breakthrough. They trusted him because they knew he had lived their experience, and they believed that if he could overcome it, so could they.
While your origin story builds the initial connection and trust, it’s your **conversion story** that moves potential clients from interest to action. This is where you prove that you can deliver real, measurable results.
After I rebuilt my business post-2008, I didn’t just create success for myself—I created a framework that has helped countless other coaches build thriving, scalable businesses. And that’s the foundation of my conversion story.
When I shifted my business model, I implemented automated systems that allowed me to scale beyond one-on-one coaching. I developed group coaching programs, leveraged technology, and put the right structures in place to create more freedom in my life. My income bounced back and continued to grow, but the real magic was in the results my clients started to see.
For example, when Joel came to me, he had been struggling for over two years to get his spiritual coaching business off the ground. He had invested in courses, programs, and strategies that didn’t deliver. He was exhausted and frustrated, just like so many coaches are. But within just eight weeks of working together, we completely transformed his business. We clarified his messaging, built systems that consistently attracted high-ticket clients, and gave him the confidence to step into his full potential. Joel’s income tripled, and he finally had the thriving business he’d been working toward for years.
This is the essence of a conversion story: It’s not just about what you’ve achieved—it’s about showing how your coaching has transformed someone else’s life and business. It’s about proving that you can deliver the results your potential clients are desperately seeking.
Now let’s talk about Lisa. Lisa was a health coach who loved working with her clients, but she was drowning in one-on-one sessions. She was trading time for money and couldn’t figure out how to scale without losing the personal touch that was so important to her.
Through my program, Lisa learned how to use story selling to connect with her audience on a deeper level. She shared her own struggles with burnout and how she found a way to scale her business without sacrificing her relationships with clients. By sharing both her origin story and her conversion story, Lisa built incredible trust with her audience. Today, her business is thriving, and she’s booked out months in advance with clients who trust her because of her story.
So, why does story selling work so well in today’s trust recession? It’s because stories create a level of authenticity and connection that traditional marketing can’t. People are tired of hearing the same sales pitches. They’re tired of empty promises and vague testimonials. What they need is real connection—something that cuts through their cynicism and speaks directly to their hearts.
When you share your origin story, you’re showing potential clients that you understand their pain. When you share your conversion story, you’re proving that you can help them solve their problems. Together, these stories create an emotional bond that builds trust and inspires action.
Lisa’s story is a perfect example of how story selling can break through even the toughest markets. When she started sharing her journey from burnout to balance, her audience connected with her on a deep emotional level. And when she backed that up with proof of the results she had helped her clients achieve, her audience couldn’t wait to work with her.
That’s the power of combining your origin and conversion stories. It’s not just about getting clients—it’s about building trust in a way that feels authentic, genuine, and aligned with who you are.
I want you to take a moment and think about your own story. What challenges have you faced? What led you to become a coach? And just as importantly, what results have you helped your clients achieve?
If you haven’t written down your origin and conversion stories yet, now is the time. Think about how you can use them to build a deeper connection with your audience and inspire them to take action.
To recap, we’re living in a trust recession, and attracting clients has never been more challenging. But by mastering the art of story selling, you can break through that wall of distrust. Your origin story creates a bond of trust by showing potential clients that you understand their struggles, and your conversion story demonstrates that you can deliver the transformation they’re seeking. When you combine these two, you create an authentic connection that inspires action.
