Everyday Ordinary Extraordinary Men

Everyday ordinary extraordinary men: Justin

Christina Sweeny and Martina Caviezel Episode 36

Meet Justin Lovelady.

Justin is a registered nurse with nearly seven years of diverse experience. Throughout his career, he has embraced a variety of roles - from biomedical researcher, phlebotomist, and EMT to nursing assistant - and has explored multiple nursing specialties, including pediatrics, camp nursing, step-down care, COVID-19 specialty care, medical oncology, and psychiatric nursing. His passion for mental health has guided him to focus on becoming a pediatric psychiatric nurse. He is currently completing my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with an emphasis in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and he looks forward to graduation in December of 2025. Beyond his professional path, he is also a cancer survivor, an avid STL foodie, a motorcycle enthusiast, a dedicated record collector, and an amateur musician. At his core, he is endlessly playful and curious about how the world works, the people that inhabit it, and the impact we all create, both big and small.

Context:

Most humans have a lot of preconceived notions and stereotypes about gender. Ex: Men are tough, silent, forceful; women are chatty, manipulative, emotional.

In doing that we put people in a box and often forget to see beyond those labels. And if someone is not fitting the mold we might call them tomboy or sissy. Those and similar labels often cause discord.

What would a world look like, where we go beyond our preconceived notions and understand that we are much more than our gender, that we humans are strong and soft and gentle, deep and powerful, tough, fierce and open, that qualities are not specific to a gender, that we all have all qualities available to express? What would a world look like where we all are free to be who we choose to be and express all our emotions?

When we allow ourselves to express the so-called masculine and feminine qualities within ourselves, we set ourselves free. When we allow others to do the same, when we accept all of them, we create synergy, peace and harmony.
