This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a law firm? Surprisingly, one might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to your good neighbor, rita M Boyd. With Rita M Boyd, attorney at law, rita, how?
Speaker 3:are you? I'm doing fine.
Speaker 2:Thank you for having me, Of course it's a pleasure to have you on the show.
Speaker 3:So, rita, tell us a bit about your law firm. Okay, I've been practicing for 31 years. I am a solo practitioner, in other words, I practice by myself. I do primarily family law and probate, and I love to do estate planning.
Speaker 2:And how did you get into this business?
Speaker 3:Oh, a long time ago somebody stole some money from me and I couldn't figure out how to get it back. So I decided to become a lawyer. So I did, and I got my money back.
Speaker 2:And with having so much experience in your industry, what are some of those most common myths or misconceptions you come across?
Speaker 3:The most common misconception I come across is that lawyers are only out to gouge you or cheat you out of your hard earned money. Most of us are not, or at least the people I associate with are not. If you're in family law, you're there because you really want to help people. You're there because you really want to help people. There are certainly other areas of law where you can make more money and not have as much headaches and sleepless nights worrying about your cases. So that's the number. One thing is that all of us lawyers are shysters. We're really not. You just need to visit with a couple of them and pick out somebody you work well with.
Speaker 2:So, Rita, when you're not helping clients, what do you do for fun? I?
Speaker 3:go to the beach. I'm a real beach person or I play with my dogs beagles.
Speaker 2:Sounds like a lot of fun. Is there a favorite beach you like to visit? I also enjoy going to the beach.
Speaker 3:I love Galveston. I've been going there since I was a fetus.
Speaker 2:So let's go ahead and switch gears for a second Rita. Can you tell our listeners a challenging time that you went through and how you overcame it? What comes to mind for you?
Speaker 3:Well, honestly, what comes to mind is the initial problem I had, which was somebody stole money from me when I wasn't a lawyer In fact, I hadn't even graduated college, I was only 20 and somebody stole six hundred seventy five thousand dollars from me. I know your eyes got really big. It's honest to God's truth. You can find it in the court transcripts or whatever. So I woke up one day and I was broke and I was having to worry about putting gas in my car. I thought thought, well, why am I broke? I thought that you know when it was when my mother died. I thought when my mother died, I would have gotten an inheritance or something. And sure enough, I checked the court files and I was entitled to a rather large inheritance.
Speaker 2:Well, my goodness bless your heart. My condolences, thank you, you know, happy that you were able to make it through that challenge. Rita, please tell our listeners one thing, because I'm sure there's many you would like them to remember about Rita M Boyd many you would like them to remember about Rita M Boyd, attorney at law.
Speaker 3:Okay, whenever they call, I listen and I take calls 365 days a year, seven days a week. They can call me on a Sunday and usually I return calls within two hours on the weekends and one hour during the weekdays. Most people I talk to express surprise at that because they can't even get past most lawyers' secretaries, much less speak to the lawyer in person without having to make an appointment, go into the office, pay a big consultation fee. I talk to people all day long, every day, for free, having to make an appointment, go into the office, pay a big consultation fee.
Speaker 2:I talk to people all day long, every day, for free, and how can our listeners learn more about Rita M Boyd? Attorney at Law.
