This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a solo practice attorney? Well, one might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Christopher Scott Boyd, with Christopher Scott Boyd, attorney at law. Christopher, how are you today?
Speaker 3:I'm great, Sophia. Thanks for asking.
Speaker 2:How do y'all so, christopher, we're excited to learn all about you and your company. Tell us about your business.
Speaker 3:So my name is Christopher Scott Boyd. I'm officially licensed in Texas as an attorney. I submitted my paperwork to be registered as a solo practitioner under the name Christopher Scott Boyd, attorney at law. I'm here for you. I can handle any type of legal issue. If I don't know about it, I'll learn about it, or I'll consult an expert attorney on it. I'm here for y'all.
Speaker 2:So, christopher, how did you get into this business? So, christopher, how did?
Speaker 3:you get into this business. Well, I grew up an avid reader. I was like the male Matilda just reading books, and I didn't have a wagon like her, but I had a backpack and I read so many books Harry Potter, ender's Game, red Wall I remember I always performed well in English class in high school because they were assigning what I perceived as a fun hobby as schoolwork, which was reading. I got to read some of my favorite classic novels, like the Great Gatsby and the Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden, which I've since reread and solidified as two of my top three out of my top five novels. I had a strong reading and writing background with a mindset of a critical thinker strong reading and writing background with the mindset of a critical thinker.
Speaker 3:So, following in the footsteps of my dad, just like my grandpa before him, they were both family lawyers for over 40 years. And then, along with my stepmom who, from ages two through 15, her name was Rita Boyd I went to law school at the age of 26 at the University of Houston Law Center. I'm still close with Rita Boyd and she's actually how I found out about this podcast and she got me in this spot, so I want to give a shout out to Rita Boyd, attorney at law. She's in North Washington Hills, texas. She can help you with your family law needs.
Speaker 2:What are some of the most common myths or misconceptions in your industry? I'm sure there's a few. You come across myths or misconceptions in your industry.
Speaker 3:I'm sure there's a few you come across. Yes, a very common myth is that drafting legal paperwork is very time consuming. But right now, with certain applications, a lot of the boilerplate language, such as like the header and the formatting, and a lot of the blanket, like very commonly used language, is now automated. So now what you do is you input the names of the parties and the specific details and you review it. So that's the myth I want to bust and I want to give my clients back that time by giving them more FaceTime, as opposed to hours with me locked away typing and drafting. I can draft quickly, but I can be on the phone with you or meet you in person or meet you in public at a coffee shop or a library. We can get to the root of your issue rather than me being locked away, spending hours and billing hours drafting.
Speaker 2:So, christopher, outside of work, what do you do for fun?
Speaker 3:So skiing is my number one hobby. It's also my best sport. It's funny how it's correlated like that. I love skiing. I don't get to do it much in Texas, but I've been all over Colorado throughout my life. I'm hoping to go skiing this March and visit my one of my best friends. He lives in Denver. We're going to meet up in my favorite resort, vail. Other than that in Texas, I like to play basketball on the weekends or the weekdays. I love playing basketball as much as my body on 31 will allow. I also love chess, poker, film, books and television.
Speaker 2:Sounds like you have an abundance of activities you like to do. Let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame and how it made you stronger? What comes to mind?
Speaker 3:Sure, no problem, sophia. So halfway through law school, when I was in the top third of my class and the peak of my intellectual abilities and in life, I was in my late twenties. I was in the best shape of my life and I had a date with one of the more attractive women who's ever given me the time of day. The day after that, I experienced a health issue that was debilitating and dropped me back academically from where I was. What I did was I followed the directions of my doctors, I continued taking medication and therapy, and I was able to finish law school on a strong note. I graduated and I passed the bar exam, and now I am registered attorney, and so, even though I faced an unexpected health issue, I overcame it and now it's just part of my life. I manage it very well. I was worried that it was going to be, you know, preventing me from my top potential, but now I feel like my potential is limitless.
Speaker 2:Christopher, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Christopher Scott Boyd, attorney at law.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, I'm really just here to help. I'm a general practitioner. Again, I mentioned the ABA model. Rules allow an attorney who's new to get versed by conducting legal research in any area of law they don't know or have it reviewed by a lawyer who is experienced in that area of law. But I actually have a lot of experience already. I worked as an intern. I drafted and as a law clerk, as an associate pending attorney, pending the bar certification. I worked on business entity formation paperwork, including LLCs, general practice partnership agreements, franchise purchase agreements, letters of intent, as well as dealt with vendor disputes such as breach of contract over a certain amount of missing units between a vendor and a purchaser, as well as I've drafted contracts in the past and I actually currently have a client where I'm drafting an LLC agreement for a metery, so I'm pretty excited about that.
Speaker 3:I also have a lot of experience doing wills and estates work, such as drafting wills and will packages like medical power of attorney that goes along with the will and what that does is if you're in a coma, it designates who will be the one to pull the plug or if and when you want that to occur. It's not something that's fun to always think about, but it's good to have just in case, so that way your family will be ready for it if it does happen, god forbid. Same thing with the will. If you dropped a will, if I dropped a will for you and get it to you at a rookie rate, I'll give you a whole will package. Usually the going rate is $1,000. I'll give it to you $100 on a rookie discount because it's so important to have a will. You never know when something bad might happen.
Speaker 3:If you do not have a will when you pass away, the court will go ahead and probate your estate anyways and they'll hire an attorney for your family who's taking care of it. You can do a holographic will. That means you write in handwriting exclusively and sign what you want and you want to say does it go to my kids, things like that, or does it go to my wife, or does it go back to my parents? Just make sure your intent is clear. I have a notary who will provide that service for free, and then we would just need two disinterested witnesses. We can get that at a UPS store or a Chase, or if you have people in your life that are disinterested and they're not receiving gifts. In the will they can be the witnesses they need to sign as well. Other than that, we just want to make sure you're taken care of.
Speaker 2:And how can our listeners learn more about Christopher Scott Boyd? Attorney at law.
