EP # 235: The Human Side of Law: How Gauthier Law Firm Redefines Client Care

Sophia Yvette

What makes Avia Gauthier with Gauthier Law Firm a good neighbor?

Are you prepared for the unexpected? If not, the state of Texas already has plans for your assets—and they might not align with your wishes. In this enlightening conversation with Attorney Avia Gauthier, founder of Gauthier Law Firm, we explore why estate planning isn't just for the wealthy but a necessity for everyone regardless of age, property ownership, or family status.

Avia shares her journey from business professional to passionate attorney, revealing how her second career calling led her to establish a law firm that treats clients like family rather than case numbers. "We meet people at some of their toughest times," she explains, emphasizing the honor she feels in guiding clients through difficult periods and seeing them emerge successfully on the other side.

What sets Gauthier Law Firm apart is their approach to legal counsel. Rather than speaking in confusing legalese, they ensure clients feel seen, heard, and valued throughout their journey. When it comes to family law matters, particularly divorce, Avia's first question is always, "Have you exhausted all options before this one?"—a refreshing perspective in an industry often criticized for putting profits before people.

Beyond estate planning, the firm handles the full spectrum of family law issues including prenuptial agreements, child custody modifications, and Avia's personal favorite—adoptions, which she lovingly describes as helping create "forever families." They also assist with personal injury cases including car accidents, slip and falls, and dog bites.

Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an estate planner? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, avia Gauthier, with Gauthier Law Firm. Avia, how are you today?

Speaker 3:

I am wonderful.

Speaker 2:

How are you? I'm also doing wonderful Good. Excited to be here, excited to have you on and learn all about you and your business.

Speaker 3:

Can you tell us a bit about your company? Sure, I'm the founding attorney for Gauthier Law Firm, where we provide authentic advocacy because every single client matters. We're a full service law firm but we specialize, as you said, in estate planning and probate. It is very critical for me to educate our community about legacy and estate planning. We also handle multiple matters with family law and also personal injury. So we kind of meet people at some of their toughest times that they've ever been in, and it's an honor to be able to hold clients' hands through those difficult times and see them to the other side.

Speaker 2:

Well, what a beautiful business you're in and how did you originally get into this business?

Speaker 3:

and how did you originally get into this business? It's funny. So law is my second career. When I was in college I said I wanted multiple careers. I'm a Gemini, so I give the word easily. So my first career was in business. I said I wanted to be in business, wanted to be in journalism, I wanted to do politics and law. So I've done everything except for politics and law. So this is actually my second career.

Speaker 3:

I started my practice right after I passed the bar. I've been wanting to go to law school and when I was dating my now husband he said time is going to pass, so what are you going to do with it? So I actually got married in law school. That was that's a crazy, another story. But I decided to, as soon as I passed the bar, open up my law firm and practice law a little bit different. I wanted to treat people like family, like friends, and not like cases and cause numbers. I wanted to really because I care deeply for people. I wanted them to be able to come to a firm at a difficult time where they would feel seen and heard wow, well, it sounds like you're definitely walking in your calling.

Speaker 3:

Thank, you, I feel like that as well.

Speaker 2:

So Avia. What is the most common myth or misconception you come across in your industry?

Speaker 3:

Lawyers have been called a lot of things. I like to say people don't like lawyers until they need one, but lawyers are essential. We stand for justice. We fight the good fight. We are the voice for the voiceless. That's exactly why I wanted to go into practicing law. So I think the myth is, unfortunately, that many of us talk a good game but that we're not very honest, and that's not true at all. That is a big misconception.

Speaker 3:

I want people to know that we are champions for justice. We try to be the superhero that our clients clients need us to be, but we aren't magicians. We can't change facts. We can't things that can't change all the things that have happened. But I want people to know that we really work hard. We work way harder than we bill you for and we want to achieve the results that you desire. But it's also in the hands of a judge, so we try our best. But I think that's what separates us and my firm a little bit differently. With my training, I feel like I'm a storyteller when it comes to fighting for my clients. I'm selling the judge on my client's desire and selling the judge on what my client believes is right for them. Desire and selling the judge on what my client believes is right for them. So I think I'm uniquely placed to be able to help bless people and really fight for them.

Speaker 2:

So Avia. Who are your target clients in terms of marketing? How do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

How do you attract them? I am when it comes to estate planning. Everyone needs an estate plan. It is so critical and so essential that everyone makes sure that their families and loved ones are not grieving and handling business at the same time.

Speaker 3:

So, whether you live in an apartment or have a home, whether you're a business owner or an employee, whether you have kids, you have a blended family or not, whether you're young or old, everyone needs an estate plan. I say that if you don't have a plan for your legacy, the state of Texas has one for you and it's best that you protect that legacy. And so, like I said, your friends and family are not grieving and handling business. So, when it comes to estate planning, everyone's my client.

Speaker 3:

Family law we all know how difficult and challenging family law can be. So if there's ever times where there has to be child custody modifications, we're able to help families there. Adoptions if a couple believes that divorce is right for their family, I've never suggested divorce. But if people arrive at that's where their family, I've never suggested divorce. But if people arrive at that's where they are, we help them through that. And then, lastly, personal injury If you're hurt in an accident or if you slipped and fall, or if you even have a dog bite, we are the firm that can help you in all three of those areas.

Speaker 2:

Well, I commend you on saying divorce is a first option. That speaks a lot to your values and your marriage.

Speaker 3:

Well, thank you, I appreciate that. I actually one of the first questions I ask when people come to me for a divorce and I ask them, it kind of takes them aback. I'm like have you exhausted all options before this one and what have you done to come to this decision? Because you know, people call us counsel and they call us lawyers. So it is my job to make sure that people are arriving at whatever case they come to us with, they're arriving at the solution that is best suited for them.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's amazing, and I think when, when you get married, if you can try to get married only once, amen, I wouldn't agree, I wouldn't take care of that relationship. So, avia, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Gautier Law Firm.

Speaker 3:

One thing they should remember we are a firm that treats our clients like family. We don't speak in legal talk and legalese. We don't speak over your head. We speak to you as you come to us. We want you to feel seen and feel heard and feel valued as a customer customer and that's whether you're picking up the phone and you think you might have a case all the way through the end, where we're signing those final orders and getting you whatever you need in terms of the kind of case that you come to us with. So I just want people to understand that the client journey is important to us.

Speaker 2:

And what type of cases are you able to take on for your client?

Speaker 3:

Anything, any realm of family law. We can take on those kinds of cases. A lot of times people will say if they have a dispute amongst their family members, that's family law. Well, not really. That's probably just the JP court or civil court. But in terms of family law, we handle prenuptial agreements, we handle divorces, we handle child custody modifications and my favorite adoptions. We love helping people with their forever family. We love doing that. It's a joy. In terms of estate planning, we handle obviously estate planning. We handle wills and trusts and we also handle probate. And then in personal injury, we handle obviously car accidents, slip and falls and dog bites.
