EP #251: Crafting Elite Outdoor Spaces: The True Star Outdoor Solutions Story
What makes Cameron Whiteman with TrueStar Outdoor Solutions a good neighbor?
Transform your ordinary backyard into an outdoor oasis with Cameron Whiteman and TrueStar Outdoor Solutions. From sprawling paver patios to stunning pool remodels, Cameron's passion for creating beautiful outdoor spaces shines through in every project his company undertakes.
Cameron's journey began between college semesters, spraying grass seed from fire hoses in what's called hydromulching. That experience sparked his love for outdoor work and beautification, eventually leading him to master irrigation and agronomy before launching TrueStar. "I felt like I could treat people better and deliver a better product," Cameron explains, highlighting the values that drive his business today.
With over a decade of experience, Cameron offers valuable wisdom to homeowners considering outdoor renovations. He cautions against the temptation to choose the cheapest bid, having witnessed countless projects fall apart just years after completion. A quality outdoor solutions company will have proper insurance, verifiable reviews, and a professional web presence – elements that may increase the initial investment but prevent costly repairs down the road. TrueStar's "boutique service" approach ensures personalized attention, flexibility throughout the project, and a commitment to client satisfaction that goes beyond the final handshake.
Beyond his professional expertise, Cameron's multi-year mission work in Mexico shaped his worldview and business ethics. This experience taught him gratitude for the comforts we enjoy in communities like Plano and Frisco while equipping him with Spanish language skills that prove invaluable in the industry. His educational rather than sales-driven approach resonates with homeowners looking for honest guidance in creating their dream outdoor spaces.

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an outdoor solutions company? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, cameron Whiteman, with his his company, truestar Outdoor Solutions. Cameron, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3:I'm doing. Great thanks for having me on. How are you?
Speaker 2:I'm doing great also and it is a pleasure to have you on today and we are so excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you tell us a bit about your company?
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, grateful for the opportunity to be on here and talk about our company. As you said, we're True Star Outdoor Solutions. We design and build elite backyards. We can make designs and then we execute those designs, making sure that you have the best backyard you can from pool remodels to patio covers, paver patios, artificial turf we do it all. If it's in the yard, we do it.
Speaker 2:And so, Cameron, when it comes to getting involved in that outdoor world. How did you get into this business originally?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so I've been in the business about 10-15 years. Originally started off in between college semesters. I was actually working on a crew that was doing what's called hydromulching, which is pretty much spraying grass seed out of fire hoses. And from there I kind of realized I loved being outside and I loved making outdoor spaces beautiful. So from there I started working for other companies doing irrigation, doing agronomy, before I realized, you know, I can do this on my own. I feel like I can treat people better, I feel like I can leave a better product, and so I created TrueStar to make sure that you know the area and the community that I grew up in everybody can have their space that they can call their home and enjoy with their families.
Speaker 2:That's amazing. And so, cameron, what is the biggest myth or misconception you come across in your industry?
Speaker 3:I think one of the biggest myths or misconceptions is that I would say there's two, one being that it's that people always go with the cheapest bid. Unfortunately, I've just seen that hurt people in the long run so many times. You know, I've gotten a lot of calls a couple of years out from someone's original project with another vendor and they have problems. The patio is breaking, things are falling apart. So my warning of advice is make sure that, whatever company you have, they have a website, they have great reviews and they have insurance, and one thing to realize is that any company that has those things they're not going to be the cheapest, but they are going to get you taken care of.
Speaker 2:So, cameron, who are your target clients and, in terms of marketing, how do you attract them?
Speaker 3:Yeah, our target clients is typically anybody from 30 to 60 years of age, normally families, but sometimes some couples without kids, and we seek our clients through a few different ways LinkedIn outreach, we have Google ads, meta ads, we have a door hanger campaign and we haven't been doing this, but really trying to step up our networking. So just attending events we plan on attending future home and garden shows and attending any other kind of events where we can network with people and just let them know how we can help them. We really try not to be salesy. Our approach is more educational and more relational and if somebody feels like we can help them, then that means we're a good fit and we'll help you out and we'll provide a service for you.
Speaker 2:Outside of work. What do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:So work is kind of my life, maybe to the dismay of my wife. But no, I have a beautiful, lovely wife, she's my best friend, and I have two kids, a three-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl, and they are a handful and they keep me busy and I love them dearly.
Speaker 2:That's amazing. So, cameron, let's go ahead and switch gears for a second. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame and how it made you a better and stronger person today? What comes to mind for you?
Speaker 3:Yeah, I did for a church. I actually volunteered for a mission, a multi-year long mission down in Mexico. It was a fabulous time. I love learning the culture. Learning Spanish has been a blessing in my life, especially in the green industry, but there was definitely some hardships. I mean, we were in areas that is not like Plano and Frisco. They don't have the blessings that we have here, and so it really blessed my life to realize that I should be grateful for what I have and to really embrace other people and other cultures and and learn to love the differences.
Speaker 2:Wow, well, that's. That's amazing, that you got the experience to go and help other people.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it's. It's definitely changed who I am in a better way and and I'm forever grateful that I was I had that opportunity yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's really awesome. So, Cameron, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about True Star Outdoor Solutions.
