EP #260: From Handyman to General Contractor: Tim North's Journey with Eagles Landing

Sophia Yvette

What makes Tim North with Eagles Landing General Contracting a good neighbor?

What happens when storm damage meets unwilling insurance companies? Tim North of Eagles Landing General Contracting has built his business fighting for homeowners to receive fair compensation while transforming disaster into opportunity. His unique approach combines technical expertise with genuine compassion that turns moments of crisis into blessings.

During our heartfelt conversation, Tim reveals the unusual origin of his construction skills—his mother taught him everything while his father "didn't even know which end of the screwdriver to use." This foundation evolved into a thriving general contracting business after a spiritual revelation prompted Tim to shift from doing all the work himself to subcontracting, creating opportunities for numerous families to earn livelihoods through his business network.

What truly sets Eagles Landing apart is Tim's approach to business as ministry. When clients face flooded homes filled with mold or storm-damaged roofs, Tim provides more than repairs—he offers emotional and spiritual support. "People generally just need somebody that they can trust and talk to and that's willing to help," he explains. This philosophy extends from his personal journey through childhood trauma, depression, and anxiety to finding deliverance through faith. The transformation informs every aspect of his business ethics, leading to what he describes as divine favor with insurance adjusters and clients alike.

Whether you're facing property damage, struggling with an insurance claim, or simply need prayer support, Tim invites listeners to reach out. His story reminds us that sometimes our greatest professional success comes not from pursuing profit, but from finding purpose in serving others through our unique gifts and experiences. Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a general contractor? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, tim North, with Eagles Landing. General Contracting Tim, how are you today? I know you have quite a story to share with us.

Speaker 3:

Yes, I'm great. I'm doing really, really well and I'm glad to be here today. Thank you, sophia.

Speaker 2:

You're welcome and we are so excited to learn all about you and your business. Let's have you start with telling us a bit about your company Eagles Landing General Contracting.

Speaker 3:

We're a full-service general contracting so we help people with everything, whatever they may need. But the main thing that we help people with is dealing with insurance claims, hail, any type of storm damage, tornado, possibly a pipe burst where you have to deal with insurance. That's always the most challenging part, because the insurance company never wants to pay and they never want to pay what they're supposed to pay for sure. So we fight for people to get them what they need done that way.

Speaker 2:

And so, tim, how did you originally get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Well, I've been a handyman most of my life. My mom actually taught me all I need to know about construction. It's funny, my dad didn't even know which end of the screwdriver to use, so my mom was an amazing woman.

Speaker 3:

She portaged through the boundary waters, she taught me how to camp, how to do you know painting, and she actually bought a new house because she couldn't do any more remodeling to her existing house. And so basically I've been doing handyman and construction work all my life. And then I remember one day God saying to me hey, tim, I will always bless you, but if you're willing to do what I gifted you to do, which is work with people in the sales and things like that, and give the work away, I can bless so many more people through you than just you. And so that began a transformation of going from a handyman to being a general contractor with. Now I subcontract out all the work and so many other families are blessed by clients. Choosing to work with us allows other people to provide for their families as well. So it's been an amazing journey. It really has.

Speaker 2:

So it sounds like Tim, what you're saying is that being a general contractor is your ministry, not just your business it is.

Speaker 3:

It really is. I have clients all the time. I was just telling you about a client had a hot water leak underneath the house. The entire house got filled with mold. So you know, when we come in, people are having problems. They're really struggling. They generally don't know how to deal with the insurance company and the insurance company is definitely not our friend and so I get the ability I can't tell you how many times I've got the opportunity to pray for people, encourage people and just tell them hey, I know it's a challenge right now, but guess what? This situation is going to give you a new house. Everything's going to be brand new when we're done, and so in the end it ends up being a blessing. Like I was telling you before, god writes straight with crooked lines this client who's going through a tough time is going to end up with a brand new house, brand new plumbing, brand new AC, everything. People generally just need somebody that they can trust and talk to and that's willing to help.

Speaker 2:

Most definitely, and sometimes in our darkest places, where God meets us and his glory is shined through the success of whatever the challenge is.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely, and one of my favorite scriptures is all things work for the good of those that love him, and sometimes it's hard, and that's really when faith kicks in, when it's not going the way we want, and that's where the Bible talks about a sacrifice of praise. I had a situation where something went my way. I was so excited, did a happy dance, and then that something was taken away and God said to me where's your happy dance now? I was so excited, did a happy dance, and then that something was taken away and God said to me where's your happy dance now? I was like what do you mean? It's gone, it's not here anymore. It's like oh really, was that person who provides for you? Is that the one who takes care of you? I'm like no, sir.

Speaker 1:

So I began to crank up my happy dance and start praising God.

Speaker 3:

You know when Paul says I've learned to be content in all situations, with much or little. That's the key to success in life and is our attitude. And if we remember always that God is in control, he's never surprised by anything happening, we can be at peace because he loves us.

Speaker 2:

Amen to that, and it's also, I think, about moving with your intentions, from your heart and not your mind. You want to move in connection with the holy spirit and allow the holy spirit to transform your whole life. Back to these questions you got it? Who are your target customers and, in terms of marketing, how do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

well, basically with really my target market is anybody that's been affected by a storm, anybody that has insurance that they need to deal with. I do all types of construction and handle anything that somebody needs, but the main thing I target for and market for is storm damage.

Speaker 2:

And, in terms of marketing, how do you attract these clients?

Speaker 3:

We're going to start making some videos, doing some Facebook things like that. My son is my general manager and so we really are a family business here and he's amazing and that's the other thing too when God was telling me if you'll give the work away, that also includes the dynamics of the corporation and the company. You know, my son manages the cruise, he handles the website stuff, he handles other things. I now have an accountant. I have somebody else that helps me work with insurance companies, so it's the same thing on this side. I need to stay in my lane and do what God made me to do and then be willing to hire and partner with other people, because it's community that makes things successful.

Speaker 2:

Amen. Now let's go ahead and switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame and how it made you a better and stronger person today? What comes to mind for you, Tim?

Speaker 3:

I through some really hard things as a child, and I won't get into the details. I'm sure everybody can relate to having people treat you in a way that is completely unacceptable and inappropriate and that led me into depression and anxiety and literally life crippling fear for several years. It caused me to make poor choices in just looking for a way to ease the pain and then, you know, I got to a point where I finally surrendered and it was like, look, I can't do this, I'm lost. And God just came in and and just literally delivered me the scripture. He was in Christ as a new creation. The old is gone and the new has come is what happened. Like that guy died and all of a sudden, this stable, reliable, independent, powerful man came out of this experience. And today you know people always ask me what you know, what your key to success is, and it's submission to Christ in my life. The only difference between me now and me hopeless is the level of submission to Christ in my life. He literally does everything through me.

Speaker 3:

Obviously, I have to go to work, I have to do this stuff. Perfect example I'm at a house where there is a roof that doesn't have a lot of damage and the insurance adjuster their job is to turn it down and the adjuster's up there like an hour and a half and he looks at me. He says don't worry, Tim, I'm going to find enough damage to get this bought for your client. I'm like what? That's not his job, Favor. At the end of the day, people say I'm a good salesperson, we do good work, all that kind of stuff, but what I'm most grateful for is the favor of God in every area of my life, Like right now. My most exciting thing is I got two grandkids that are like five months and 10 months and they're like, they're my world. You know, I just it's. This company allows me to do what I want to do. I'm able to be a blessing to people, but most of all, I'm able to be a good provider for my family, and that means a lot.

Speaker 2:

Well, tim, thank you so much for sharing that with us. And one further question for you on that same note. Now, when you were on your path to becoming and getting delivered Right, what was it that kept you seeking God out in that time to eventually lead to your salvation?

Speaker 3:

Man when I was in a program called Teen Challenge, which is a Christian discipleship program, when I was 20 years old, I had given my life to Christ and in my mind I had failed and I didn't want the Bible to be true and I didn't want God to be real. But I knew he was, and so I was at just a point of complete and total desperation. And I remember I woke up at 4.58 in the morning and I heard the audible voice of God and he said to me hey, tim, is it me or everything else? And I was like God, I want you. I want you more than anything. But I'm terrified, god, because if you reject me, I know there's nowhere else to go. And he said to me Tim, I'm your father, I love you. I made you for heaven. You couldn't get to heaven if you wanted to. And he said, tim, if you want to go around this mountain as many times as you want, I will always clean you up. I will always love you and I will always love you and I will always take care of you and I'll also always let you go do dumb stuff if you want. And he said but don't you want what I have for you and I was like, well, what do you have for me? And he said it doesn't matter. But if you want what I have for you, you're going to have to. Let me grow you up and I'm going to tell you, tim, it's not going to feel like I love you In this process of maturity, in this process of sanctification. You're going to feel alone. You're going to feel abandoned, you're going to feel like I don't care. But I need you to hold on to the truth that I'm your father and I love you and I promise you, if you hold on, it will be okay in the end, and that's what I've held on to.

Speaker 3:

He gave me the verse Jeremiah 29, 11,. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, to give you hope in the future. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and then I will bring you back from the places where I placed you into captivity and where I banished you into exile. And that was the promise that I held on to all these years. And now it's true, in my life I have more than I could ever possibly imagine, and what's so funny is the things I thought that mattered the most the cars, the money, all that kind of stuff are the things I care about the least. Like I just said, my grandkids, my family, my family got a beautiful wife today, and so you know, it's amazing how God just takes hopelessness and truly beauty from ashes is the best way I can describe it.

Speaker 2:

Amen, amen. And final question for you. You got it.

Speaker 3:

I really enjoy it and I want to appreciate you. I really appreciate your, your, your heart and what you want to do for your clients. It's the same way as me. I want to be a blessing to my clients and I can tell with absolute sincerity that your desire is to be a blessing to people, and that's a rarity and I want to say thank you for that as well.
