EP #269: Money Wizardry: From Numbers Kid to Investment Guru- Jacob Millican's Journey With 9M Investments LLC

Sophia Yvette

What makes Jacob Millican with 9M Investments LLC a good neighbor?

Wondering if you're on the right financial path? Jacob Millican of 9M Investments LLC believes that your journey to financial security should be as unique as you are. After more than two decades in the investment industry and eight years running his own firm, Jacob has developed a refreshingly personalized approach to financial advising.

"Everybody's a little bit different on how they view the world, and what their goals are, and the things that they really value," Jacob explains. This philosophy stands in stark contrast to the cookie-cutter solutions often found elsewhere. His clients range from young professionals just starting their financial journey to retirees converting savings into sustainable income, but they share a common thread – they've reached a turning point where financial clarity becomes essential.

The conversation explores a critical misconception about investment advisors: that they're all the same. Jacob emphasizes that finding someone who genuinely understands your goals and whom you trust implicitly is just as important as the technical aspects of financial planning. This human element of advising – building relationships based on understanding and trust – is central to his practice at 9M Investments.

Jacob's personal journey includes taking a leap of faith to establish his own firm after working for some of the industry's giants. This experience mirrors what he helps clients do: assess where they stand financially, envision their desired future, and build a customized bridge between those points. Through his website and social media presence, he maintains an educational approach, sharing valuable insights that help people make informed decisions about their financial futures.

Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an investment advisor? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, jacob Milliken, with 9M Investments LLC.

Speaker 3:

Jacob, how are you?

Speaker 2:

today, I'm doing well, how are you? I'm also doing well and we're excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Speaker 3:

Sure, I'm an investment advisor. A lot of people will see it as an RIA, which just stands for Registered Investment Advisor. I'm a small firm that we work with people to help them with the retirement planning, the investments around that retirement planning. It really just kind of help people get on path or, if they're on path, help them figure out what that looks like and get them to a place where they feel comfortable in retirement how did you originally get into this business?

Speaker 3:

well, I have now been doing this for over 20 years, so it seems like forever ago now. But uh, you know, even as a kid, I was always number focused and it just kind of seemed to become natural to me. And, um, you know, after I got out of school, it was one of the the first jobs that I had was I was like you know what, I think this might be a good fit for me. And, um, you know, through the years I've done it for other people and now I've had my own business for, uh, going on eight. So, yeah, it's been a long journey.

Speaker 2:

At this point, Wow so, jacob, being in your industry eight years now, what is the most common myth or misconception you typically come across?

Speaker 3:

You know, it kind of depends on the person I'm talking to.

Speaker 3:

You know what they've heard or what they feel or what they've seen, and you know, based on their kind of their past experiences, I think and it's not just my profession, but you know, you can kind of pick any profession.

Speaker 3:

I think people will say, oh, everybody's the same, or it's all done kind of one way, and you know, being in business for yourself, you, you know, know that that that is not the case, and so when I I think about that, it's, um, that all you know, when people approach me, you know a lot of times they're interviewing lots of advisors because they're they're trying to find that the perfect fit for them and so, um, I think that's the biggest one is that you know we're all alike and we're all doing the exact same things, which I guess to a point can be true. There are a lot of advisors that are doing the exact same things. So you know, I think it's when I have people approach me, I always tell them you know, it's the numbers, part of it is one of it. But you know, having somebody that you trust in, somebody that you feel kind of has your back and has you and your goals in mind. You know, that's not necessarily everybody is out that way.

Speaker 3:

So you know, I think that's probably one of the bigger myths out there.

Speaker 2:

Now getting into your target clients a bit more. Who are they? And, in terms of marketing, how do you like to attract them?

Speaker 3:

are they? And, in terms of marketing, how do you like to attract them? So my, my typical clients can can look really kind of different for the most part, a good portion of the people that come looking for advisor or getting close to retirement. So they're trying to figure out, you know, how am I going to turn this, this money that I've saved through the years into income or and that's a lot of times how people approach me.

Speaker 3:

But you know, really it's all ages I have young clients, I have retired clients and really for all those people, I think the common denominator is they've reached a point in their life where they want to do something and they want to make a change and they want to make sure that they're on a path that fits. You know, whatever they're trying to do, they've kind of reached a point in their life that it's like, okay, I can't play with this anymore. I have to figure it out and make sure I'm doing everything that I can and you know, again, that's a big part of what I do for people to help them see where they are today, you know any changes that we might need to do or, you know, are they on the right path? And really kind of, you know, letting them know yay or nay or whatever changes that could go along. That can kind of help their situation.

Speaker 2:

So, in short form, jacob, what you're saying is your clients are anyone who needs a path adjustment. Is that correct?

Speaker 3:

That's a good way to put it. Yes, you know path adjustment, or you know sometimes being starting a path. The good thing that I really enjoy about what I do is you know everybody's different, how they view the world, how they want to approach it, and that's the kind of the thing that I love about it is you know everybody's a little bit different. You know kind of meeting them where they are, you know starting that path toward where they want to go is you know what I do for people.

Speaker 2:

Let's switch gears back to yourself for a second. Can you share with our listeners a hardship or life challenge you overcame and how it made you a better and stronger person today? What comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

I've been in this industry for over 20 years and you know I've worked for some of the biggest companies in the world and I will say that, starting my business at a little bit of an older age, if you will a challenge that I was like yeah I'm, I'm up for it, let's see what this looks like. And so you know, looking back, it's been eight years but it seems like yesterday that you know I kind of took up that challenge and say, hey, you know, I think there's a way that I can do it that would be different from some of the places that I've worked before. So now, at eight years later, that you know putting that kind of faith and you know taking a leap of faith really that this would work and everything else. Know, taking a leap of faith really that this would work and everything else, you know that has been a big change in my life, for sure Now can you share with our listeners one thing they should remember about 9M Investments LLC.

Speaker 3:

You know, the one thing when I think about everything that I do is it's customized.

Speaker 3:

And you know, as I was mentioning, you know everybody's a little bit different on how they view the world, and you know what their goals are and the things that they really value and you know, from person to person some of those things can be very similar, um, but they can be very, very different too, and so, um, you know again, helping people see what the solution is, and then, you know, providing a customer approach to get there, I think, is the biggest thing that I do. That, you know, if I look at my world, that kind of stands out to me. That is very different.

Speaker 2:

And where can our listeners go to learn more about 9M Investments LLC?

Speaker 3:

The website is probably the best place 9minvestmentslccom but you know I'm out there all on the social media as well, so you know kind of anything you can think of, we're out there. You know, sharing content and sharing ideas, and I really take kind of an educational approach of putting out things that you know help people and sharing ideas and I really take a kind of an educational approach of putting out things that you know help people with their own questions. So you know that's the. What I try to do is really try to educate and show people all the solutions that are out there and, you know, help guide them to the one that fits them the best.

Speaker 2:

Well, Jacob, I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and your business the best moving forward.

Speaker 3:

Great Thanks for having me.
