EP 323: The Future of Braces: Dr. Peikar's Revolutionary Approach to Orthodontics
What makes Dr. Peikar with Peikar Orthodontics a Good Neighbor?
Revolutionary approaches to orthodontic care are transforming smiles across all ages, and Dr. Peikar stands at the forefront of this innovation. His practice in Colleyville, Texas combines traditional orthodontic expertise with groundbreaking technology that's changing how we think about braces.
Dr. Peikar reveals the limitations of conventional orthodontics, where brackets are placed through visual estimation and one-size-fits-all wires are used regardless of patient differences. His solution? Custom 3D-printed bonding trays that position brackets with perfect precision, personalized brackets designed for each patient's unique tooth morphology, and customized wires that adjust forces based on individual factors like ethnicity, age, and gender. This personalized approach dramatically reduces treatment complications like bracket breakage while improving overall outcomes.
What makes Dr. Peikar uniquely qualified to pioneer this technology is his fascinating background. Beyond orthodontics, he holds a master's degree in quantum mechanics and a PhD in biomechanics—interdisciplinary expertise that bridges clinical practice with materials science. He addresses common misconceptions about clear aligners, explaining that while they're popular, fixed appliances often deliver better results for patients with compliance challenges.
Perhaps most surprising is the age range Dr. Peikar treats—from seven-year-old children to his current oldest patient at 89 years old—proving orthodontic care truly has no age limit.

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an orthodontist? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Dr Pekar, with Pekar Orthodontics. Dr Pekar, how are you today?
Speaker 3:I'm wonderful. How are you, Sophia?
Speaker 2:I'm also doing wonderful. Thank you for asking. Now we are excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you start by telling our listeners just a little bit about your company?
Speaker 3:Yes, of course. So I'm Dr Paykar and I have a clinic, paykar Orthodontics, in Colleyville, texas, which is close to DFW Airport. Also, we have a company kind of attached in the same building is called Celebrace, that provides a new technology for braces and I can explain what Cellebrace is and how it's different with traditional braces. How does that sound?
Speaker 2:Perfect.
Speaker 3:Awesome. So, basically, with traditional braces, your orthodontist usually puts the brackets on the teeth and they eyeball it. Sometimes there are some mistakes. Orthodontist usually puts the brackets on the teeth and they eyeball it. Sometimes there are some mistakes. What we do? We have a bonding tray that 3d prints just for you as the the patient, that places the brackets exactly where they need to be, that they are manufactured based on the scan that we take from you. Also, the brackets that we that we make, they are custom 3D printed and we place them exactly fit to your teeth, because different people have different morphology of teeth, so sometimes brackets break and that delays the treatment. But with this, the custom fit helps to make the treatment more smooth and the fractures, debonds decrease.
Speaker 3:The other thing is the wire that we have. It's a custom wire as opposed to like traditional braces that the wires are one size fits all. For us, the wires are adjusted to you. For example, it depends on your ethnicity. If your ethnicity is like African-American, you need higher forces. If you're male, you need higher forces. Depending on your age, the force changes and this is the technology that we have and we manufacture that in Colleyville in Texas and we use the same product in our clinic Paycard Orthodontics and they are kind of next to each other. So basically that was a quick summary of Celebrase and Paycard Orthodontics.
Speaker 2:Now, how did you get started with both of these businesses?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so I am an orthodontist and also because I loved physics, I did my master's degree in quantum mechanics and condensed matter and also my PhD in biomechanics. So a combination of these two helped me to come up with this idea of Cellobrace, that basically we customize the braces for each patient. You know, going to clinic and seeing patients is obviously, obviously this is the fun part for me, and also creating this technology. Cellobrace is another fun, that they kind of complement each other and I think for each technology the best is that you are kind of the customer of that technology so you can kind of improve that technology as well.
Speaker 2:Now, what is the most common myth or misconception you come across in your industry?
Speaker 3:You know in the industry. Sometimes maybe you know like aligners could be like a misconception that they are great for a lot of different cases. But sometimes if the compliance of the patient is not good, that's not a good option, because aligners are as good as how many hours you wear them. So, for example, if a teenager doesn't wear the aligners, it's not going to be a good option. So sometimes there is a myth that you know aligners can treat all the patients, but that's not the reality. So sometimes you need a fixed device that you don't have the option to remove it.
Speaker 2:Now we know marketing is the heart of every business. How do you currently market your business?
Speaker 3:Actually, for the Paycard orthodontics, we are connected to some schools locally so we talk to them and we try to support them, their sports, and I think that has helped us to increase the awareness about our clinic and also, you know, there are like local businesses in our area that we try to support them. I think that's another avenue of increase the awareness about Pekar orthodontics. So I think these are the marketing routes that we have gone and we are pretty happy about it so far.
Speaker 2:Now, who are your target? Customers or patients?
Speaker 3:So you know, like for orthodontics, the youngest is when you are seven years old, the oldest. There is no limit. Actually, my oldest patient currently is 89 years old. My oldest patient currently is 89 years old. So there is no limit for the age. But ideal treatment time for orthodontics is when you're about like 11, 12, 11, 12, 13 years old. That's the ideal time. Some interventions need to be done earlier when you earlier, when the patient is 7, 8, 9. But majority of patients is when they are 10, 11, 12. So who is our customers? Usually moms are the ones who decide. I don't know how that works. That dads apparently doesn't decide. So our audience is moms who have patients who have kids that they are 10, 11, 12. So, basically, obviously some dads are very involved in the orthodontic treatment of the kids too, but what I see is that mostly moms are the decision makers here. So there are customers and obviously patients. Kids are our indirect customers.
Speaker 2:So, Dr Pekar, have you ever thought of having your own podcast?
Speaker 3:Not really, actually, I haven't thought about it. And to be, honest, I'm running these two businesses, Bekartnotics and Celebrace. I think that's good enough. So I would say, Sofia, you should take that task. I let you do that. So I do my job and you do your job that you're best at.
Speaker 2:Now, outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
Speaker 3:I like watching movies, I like hiking and sometimes I go lecture in conferences and you know when I go on and I enjoy going on those trips. So I would say these are my fun activities.
Speaker 2:And what is one thing you would like our listeners today to take away from Picard Orthodontics?
Speaker 3:Yeah, sure. So everything is improving. Technology is coming and you know AI is a buzzword, but also it's a reality of our world. And at Picard Orthodontics we are presenting this new technology and I'm hoping that our audience hear about this and come visit us and use the cutting edge technology to improve their smile.
Speaker 2:Well, Dr Picard, I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and your business the best moving forward.
Speaker 3:Thank you so much, sophia. Thank you for inviting me and it was fun.
