EP 364: Rooted In Resilience: A Beauty Brand Born From Hardship
What makes Jonquil Guidry with By Jonquil a good neighbor?
Jonquil believes the hardest seasons in life can become the soil for someone else’s healing. By Jonquil was born from her own turning point—going from owning ten properties to living with ten bags, and turning her kitchen into a lab to restore her hair, calm her skin, and rebuild her confidence. In this conversation, we sit down with Jean to explore how stress, cortisol, and survival intersect with hair loss, why “natural” labels can be misleading, and how simple, organic ingredients often outperform complex formulas that hide what truly matters.
Jonquil breaks down practical ways to read beauty labels without getting duped by greenwashing—what ingredient order reveals, why a shorter shelf life can be a good sign, and how to choose products that support the scalp’s microbiome. She shares why she creates for women first, especially single and divorced moms rebuilding after loss, and how rituals like scalp massage, gentle cleansing, and silicone-free care can turn daily routines into healing moments. At 58, she’s stepping boldly into YouTube and community-building, proving that honest, mission-centered marketing resonates deeper than any trend.
We also explore how she’s linking clean beauty with life coaching, aiming for big-box distribution while protecting the integrity of her formulas. Her approach blends science, faith, and resilience—offering real strategies for hair regrowth, stress reduction, and label literacy. Jonquil’s mission is rooted in helping women revitalize hair and skin damaged by stress, illness, medication, or neglect. Her belief is simple: with faith, nothing is impossible. The leaves of the trees were created for healing, and By Jonquil’s plant-based “Revitalizing Self Care Botanicals” are designed to come alongside women on their journey back to radiance, confidence, and well-being.

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.
SPEAKER_00:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a beauty line? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Jean Quill Guidry, with By John Quill Beauty Products. Jean Quill, how are you today?
SPEAKER_02:I'm wonderful. How are you, Sophia?
SPEAKER_00:I am doing wonderful. Also, now we are excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you start off by telling our listeners just a little bit about your company and your very unique story?
SPEAKER_02:Okay, wonderful. Well, by JohnQuil came out of my need to regrow my hair in the process of my journey. Basically, I've written a book called Bear, My Journey from Owning Ten Properties to Being Homeless with 10 Bags. And so out of my story, out of the stress of my hardship, I went into my kitchen and started creating products that I needed. I have always used essential oils and herbs for probably three decades now. So I used the knowledge that I had to create a product that would, or products that would help me with the loss of my hair, issues with my skin, as well as things that might not taste very good, but they could be eaten. I wanted to make sure I had the very best holistic natural products to use on my skin. And out of necessity, out of a lack of resources, I started creating my own products and started giving them to friends and family to try and test, as well as for gifts.
SPEAKER_00:Wow. Now, what is the most common myth or misconception you come across in the beauty industry today?
SPEAKER_02:Oh, a myth. Um it's sad, but some of the products that they say are natural really are not, because with some of the chemicals that they put in them, it takes them from their natural state into a state of being toxic in many cases. And it's sad that that happens, and we are sometimes misled by the marketing, the labeling, and don't realize what we're actually bringing home and putting on our scalp, which is also our skin.
SPEAKER_00:Now, Jean Quill, what are some things to look out for when it comes to that labeling to ensure we're actually using organic clean products?
SPEAKER_02:Well, some of the, if you can't say it, chances are it's not an organic product. Um, so many times we are misled by very long words and chemicals and confused by them. Um, and so many times if it does not have uh the natural ingredients, and especially in many cases, I find that if it says shea butter, for instance, that might be the ninth or tenth ingredient in it. And there's so many other things that, as I said, you can't even pronounce before shea butter. And so um I want to make sure that I stick very closely with things being organic and natural, and even if the shelf life is shorter, I would still rather have a shorter shelf life, but know that I'm providing really good top quality ingredients for people to use.
SPEAKER_00:So, Jean Quill, switching gears for a second, we know marketing is the heart of every business. Who are your target customers or audience? And in terms of marketing today, how do you stay front and center in front of them?
SPEAKER_02:Well, right now, um, my focus is really women because I created it because I lost hair and I came across um family members that have lost hair, uh, as well as various different friends losing hair. And as women, you know, our hair is our crowning glory. So that's how this all began. And when it comes to marketing, I started a YouTube channel about seven months ago just so that I can share my spiritual growth, eating well, just a variety of different things, as well as you know, seeking peace, self-care, those types of things. And so that's where I began. I'm still in the process of building and creating, but this is how I chose to start it and really through word of mouth.
SPEAKER_00:Now, Jean-Coil, have you ever thought about doing your own branded podcast before?
SPEAKER_02:I had thought about it. Um, I just hadn't gotten started with that yet. I started with um, I'm older, I'm actually 58 years old. And so social media is very new to me. And uh so I'm learning as I go. And so I had thought about it. I just wasn't sure the process of getting into podcasts. So I just started doing videos um on my YouTube. Sometimes I'm not sure. I wasn't sure if I was holding the camera in the correct direction or not, but um, I just asked my audience to show me some grace as I learned in front of them and shared my journey. I've even cut my hair um on camera so that um because I was a licensed cosmetologist many years ago, and so I use that as a tutorial in case someone needs to cut their own hair, because with a lack of finances um through my journey, that has definitely been the case in many times for many times.
SPEAKER_00:Well, you know what they say, without no tests, there is no testimony, right?
SPEAKER_02:So true, so true, and boy, have I had some tests. So but I'm very grateful and thankful for them.
SPEAKER_00:Amen to that. Outside of work, what do you and your family like to do for fun?
SPEAKER_02:Uh, I enjoy movies, that's something that my uh sons and I have three grown sons, and that's something that we've always enjoyed is movies together. And so that's uh one of the fun things. Enjoy bowling. I'm not very good at it, but I do like it. Just a variety of different things. Like I enjoy crafts also. So, and cooking, that's a big thing for my family. We love cooking together.
SPEAKER_00:Amazing, you know. Growing up, I was always told cooking and food is a language of love, right?
SPEAKER_02:So true, so very, very true.
SPEAKER_00:Now, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Buy Jean Quill Beauty Products.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, buy Johnquil beauty products. Um it was created out of a need, um, and I'm hoping to use it to assist others who have also had some of the same needs that I have. I would like to um help others who, um, especially divorced women, divorced moms, especially, create something that they love as well. This came out of a need as well as a love, um, because as we spoke about cooking in the kitchen, these are things that I've mixed up in my kitchen. And um, and it came out of love. It came out of being able to use them as gifts as well to help family and friends. And so I'd really love to use this eventually to help others do the same because it was a struggle for me. I had to make certain sacrifices just to get the products needed to create the products, you know, get the um raw materials to create the products. So I'd really like to use this eventually to help other divorced moms, especially, because that's at the core, my why in everything that I do.
SPEAKER_00:Wow, now that truly is beautiful. And five to ten years down the line, where do you see your product line going or being put up?
SPEAKER_02:Um, hopefully in a lot of big box stores, uh, so that uh it can help, you know, others because we don't realize the things that happen to us with stress, the loss of hair, the loss of our crown in glory, um, the aging of our skin, you know, because stress and cortisol does that. And so I just really like to educate. Um, I've also um started working on life coaching so that I can help in the process and have everything tied back to helping my target market, which is women, which is, you know, single moms. And so I've worked on doing a lot of things uh to prepare and equip myself to help in any way that I can.
SPEAKER_00:And where can I listeners go to learn more about Baijon Quill beauty products?
SPEAKER_02:To my channel, uh 10 Houses to 10 Bags. I'm going to start speaking more regarding my products on there. I've touched on them here and there in various different videos, but my channel is called 10 Houses to 10 Bags, and that's um T O in the middle of the 10. So 10 Houses to 10 Bags is where you can go to learn more about what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_00:Well, Jean Quill, I really appreciate you being on the show today. We wish you and your business the best moving forward.
