Good Neighbor Podcast: Frisco

EP 365: What Happens When Your Pet Needs Help At 2 A.M.

Sophia Yvette

What makes Dr. Mike LoSasso with Frisco Emergency Pet Care a good neighbor?

Dr. LoSasso believes every pet deserves help the moment they need it—even if it’s 2 a.m. on a holiday. As the owner of Frisco Emergency Pet Care, he leads a true 24/7/365 veterinary emergency hospital built to serve dogs and cats when their families have nowhere else to turn. In this episode, he walks us through how a fully staffed emergency clinic operates after-hours, why independence matters for access, and what every pet parent should understand before a crisis hits. From triage to diagnostics to treatment planning, Dr. LoSasso explains how his team fills the gap with fast testing, clear communication, and compassionate care.

We trace the hospital’s beginning to a major shortage in Collin County, where only one emergency clinic served the region back in 2016. Dr. LoSasso explains how a network of more than 150 general practices now refers urgent cases to Frisco Emergency Pet Care, giving owners a trusted handoff when minutes matter. He also shares why the hospital focuses on search visibility and professional referrals over social media—because in an emergency, people call their vet, search “emergency vet near me,” and go. That straightforward strategy keeps attention on the essentials: being findable, reachable, and ready at all hours.

One major theme is independence. As an owner-operated emergency hospital, Frisco Emergency Pet Care can offer flexible payment options and case-by-case solutions that many corporate policies don’t allow. That flexibility can mean the difference between delay and immediate, life-saving care. Dr. LoSasso also lays out the real signs that require emergency medicine, when a day practice is appropriate, and how triage works to prioritize the sickest patients first to protect outcomes. You’ll also hear the human side—his decades of experience, a lifelong love for animals, and a sailor’s steady calm—that shape the way his team supports families even on the toughest nights.

Frisco Emergency Pet Care is a full-service, fully equipped hospital with a doctor on staff at all times. Their modern diagnostic suite includes in-house blood analyzers, digital radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, and even 3D CT—ensuring fast answers when timing is critical.

SPEAKER_00:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a veterinary hospital? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Mike Losaso, with Frisco Emergency Pet Care. Mike, how are you today?

SPEAKER_02:

I'm doing great, Sophia. How are you doing?

SPEAKER_01:

I'm also doing great. Now we are excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you start off by telling our listeners just a little bit about your company and how you got into this business?

SPEAKER_02:

Sure. Well, I've been a practicing veterinarian since 1993. So that's uh we're coming up on 33 years. Um, but we opened this emergency hospital back in July of 2016. So we are not your typical day practice. We don't do vaccines and spays, neuters, dentals, all those things you associate with the um, you know, with your primary veterinary. We are strictly an emergency hospital. We've been 24-7 since uh 2018. So we see we see dogs and cats um all around the clock every day of the year.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, every day of the year, does that mean no holidays?

SPEAKER_02:

We are open 365, 24-7. So if it's two o'clock in the morning on Christmas, we're gonna be there.

SPEAKER_01:

Wow. Now, how did you originally get into a business like this? How does one become an owner of a veterinary hospital?

SPEAKER_02:

Well, in the in the state of Texas, you you have to be a veterinarian. Um, but we saw the need for another hospital in the Frisco area. It was at the time an underserved area in 2016. There was only one other hospital, emergency hospital in all of Collin County. So we were the we were the second one. I think there are about eight of us now, but uh at the time we saw a need for you know for the services. We were so busy uh at the other location that we decided to open our own.

SPEAKER_01:

Amazing. Now, Mike, to be in this industry, you have to be an animal lover. So where does your heart for animals come from?

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, I I grew up uh mostly around horses, honestly, and and and some dogs. Um oh gosh, back in Nevada, that was a long time ago. Um, but yeah, I made that decision to go to vet school when I was, as many veterans will tell you, when I was you know six or seven, and never never questioned that decision and did everything. Um, you know, decided where I was going to college uh according to where the vet schools were. So yeah, that started early on.

SPEAKER_01:

So, Mike, being in this industry today, what is the most common myth or misconception you typically come across?

SPEAKER_02:

You know, as far as uh um gosh, a misconception, I think that um you know, that that services maybe aren't available that um you know if they're sick in the middle of the night, there's nowhere to turn to, but we're there and we field phone calls all night and we see patients that walk in at you know two or three in the morning, as well as you know, during the day, during regular business hours.

SPEAKER_01:

So there's no need to fear Frisco Emergency Pet Care Center is here, yeah.

SPEAKER_02:

That's that's right.

SPEAKER_01:

Now we know marketing is the heart of every business. Who are your target customers or audience? And in terms of marketing, how do you attract them?

SPEAKER_02:

Well, I mean, our our audience really is anybody that has a dog or a cat that is in need, uh, that's that's sick or or gets injured in in any way. So we are available as far as how we market. We use um yeah, we have a wide, a very wide referral base. We've got uh about 150 hospitals that send us cases, and so the the regular we call regular day hospitals or general practices will uh inform their clients that we're that we're there. Uh, we're also pretty easy to find with a with a Google search. We have at the at the moment kind of minimal social media because I haven't found a way to do that consistently enough to do it right, and so we haven't done it much at all.

SPEAKER_01:

I was just gonna ask you if you ever thought about doing your own podcasts.

SPEAKER_02:

You know, I've I I have considered it, um, but it's going to take you know some time to do it right. And at the moment, I work enough shifts up at the hospital that that would be uh a bit of a challenge, but it may be something that I put the hospital director on to.

SPEAKER_01:

And outside of work, what do you and your family like to do for fun?

SPEAKER_02:

Uh, we like to uh like to be outside. I've got a couple of uh girls still at home. Uh most of my children are grown and gone, so I spend as much time as I can with my granddaughter. Um, and my real passion is actually getting out onto the ocean and going sailing.

SPEAKER_01:

Hey, that's amazing. I love the water. Now, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Frisco Emergency Pet Care.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, I think the one thing is that we are we're available 24-7. We are an independent hospital, so we're not owned by a corporation, and we don't have any uh any corporate masters to answer to. So it gives us some flexibility and we can do some things, including offering payment plans and trying to make care more available and accessible, which is something that for whatever reason the corporate owned practices are really not interested in doing.

SPEAKER_01:

And where can our listeners go to learn more about Frisco Emergency Pet Care?

SPEAKER_02:

Well, since we don't use a lot of social media, uh I would say the best place is probably our website, which is strangely enough www.friscoemergencypetcare.com. Tried to make that easy and SEO friendly.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, Mike, I really appreciate you being on the show today. We wish you and your business the best. Moving forward. Thank you, ma'am.

SPEAKER_02:

I appreciate your time.
