EP 388: A Touch Of Love: Redefining Residential Senior Care

Sophia Yvette

What makes Lovie Baxter with A Touch of Love Care Home a good neighbor?

Lovie believes no family should feel lost when navigating senior care. In this episode, we sit down with the founder of A Touch of Love Care Home to unpack what truly differentiates residential care homes from assisted living, memory care, and nursing homes—and why finding the right fit can change a family’s life. With clarity and compassion, Lovie explains how smaller, home-based care often provides the dignity, routine, and attention seniors need most.

Bringing 30 years of medical experience to her work, Lovie shares the real markers of quality that go far beyond glossy brochures. We talk about staffing ratios that actually make sense, calm and consistent nighttime coverage, personalized care plans, and the everyday signals that residents are genuinely known—not just managed. She breaks down common myths around “group homes” and explains how residential care homes can better support seniors who need help with daily living but don’t require intensive medical oversight.

You’ll also hear the deeply personal story behind her mission, including operating a care home in her late mother’s house and working alongside her 80-year-old father. Lovie walks through the signs that it may be time to seek support—missed medications, frequent falls, caregiver burnout—and the questions families should ask when touring a care home: How are meals prepared? What is the fall prevention plan? How is communication handled with families? We also explore her education-first approach, from community talks to social media and an upcoming podcast designed to help families make confident decisions before a crisis forces rushed choices.

If you’re weighing care options for a parent, grandparent, or even planning for your future self, this conversation offers practical guidance, reassurance, and hope.

SPEAKER_01:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

SPEAKER_02:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a residential care home? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Lovey Baxter, with a touch of love home care. Lovey, how are you today?

SPEAKER_00:

I'm doing well. How are you doing? Happy holidays.

SPEAKER_02:

Yes, happy holidays to you too, and I am doing great. Now we are so excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you start off by telling our listeners just a little bit about your company?

SPEAKER_00:

Absolutely. So again, my name is Lovey Baxter. The name of my company is A Touch of Love Care Home, where I provide assisted living for senior citizens in a residential setting.

SPEAKER_02:

Wow. Now, where did your heart for starting something like a care home come from?

SPEAKER_00:

So I've been in the medical field for over 30 years, turling my age a little bit, but um I was seeing patients inside of care homes. I was seeing patients in nursing homes, assisted livings, and in their own personal homes. And I saw a huge discrepancy in the type of care that was being provided and how the seniors were being cared for. And so I fell in love with the care home model and decided to venture out from, you know, the clinic setting and develop that model and build on to what I was seeing. So that is kind of what gave birth to a touch of love care home. And here we are nine and a half years later, still going strong, growing very rapidly, which is a good problem to have. And most importantly, we're be we're able to provide the care our senior citizens deserve.

SPEAKER_02:

Now, getting a little bit deeper into your company on the day-to-day, what is that most common myth or misconception you typically come across?

SPEAKER_00:

So a lot of people refer to care homes as group homes, and group homes tend to have a negative connotation to them. So I am constantly in the community educating not only families, but even healthcare professionals about the differences between group homes and care homes versus assisted livings, memory care facilities, nursing home placement. Each one has its own unique characteristics. And so I spend a lot of time just educating people on the differences and definitely how they can identify what the best environment for their loved one would be.

SPEAKER_02:

Now let's switch gears for a second here because we know marketing is the heart of every business. It's how you keep the doors open. So who are your target customers or audience? And in terms of your online footprints, how do you stay in front of them?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, so actually, my target market is anybody because everybody knows someone who's getting older. That is the goal in life, right? If you are born, the goal is to get older. So families that are sandwiched in between trying to care for their family, their growing children, and um now mom, dad, aunt Susie are getting older. So now they're, you know, tasked with trying to figure out how to care for them. Um also people who are just looking for which environment is the best for them, the elderly elders themselves that are in independent living, and now they're realizing this is too much for me. I can't handle, you know, just the daily task. How can I get assistance? Do I need to go to a nursing home? Do I need to go to an assisted living? They're also my target market because I can educate them and help them make the best decision. Um, so everyone is my target market. I try to stay ahead of the curve by educating people. That's the the key to my success is being in the community, educating people on the choices that they can make.

SPEAKER_02:

Now, in terms of educating the community, have you ever thought about having your own podcast as a vehicle to do that?

SPEAKER_00:

Actually, I have, and it is coming down the pipeline this new year. Um, currently, I think I've been on probably over 20 different podcasts. Um, and it the education piece is just key. Families want to know more. They want to know how to make the decisions. They want to know the differences between, you know, residential care homes and group homes and assisted livings. And most importantly, they want to make the right decision so that they're not having to move their loved one again and again and again. So, yes, to answer your question, I am getting ready to come out with the podcast. And I am going to continue to be in the community, going to senior centers, going to um churches, going everywhere to help educate people on, you know, just what I do and how to make the best decision for their loved one.

SPEAKER_02:

Now, since you have a heart for this industry, do you have family members that are near and dear to your heart that are maybe more um in the senior citizen category?

SPEAKER_00:

I do. Um, my father is still with us. My mom is passed on. Um, I utilize her home as one of my care homes. And so going to that care home has a special meaning. Um, every time I step foot in that door, it just kind of um gives me just a warm, fuzzy feeling, for lack of a better word, because she was my number one cheerleader when I started my business. And um, every time I go into that home, it is just her presence, and it just lets me know that, you know, I'm on the right track. I have been able to keep that home filled since I opened the doors. There's a waiting list currently right now for that particular home. And so um that just kind of lets me know that I'm doing the right thing. My father is currently with me now, and he definitely um is right with me every every step I need, you know, whether it's replacing washing machines or trying to fix a ceiling fan. He um has definitely been there to help me. And so he doesn't want me to classify him as a senior citizen, of course. Um, but he is definitely older. He's 80, which is a blessing. Um, and he's there to help me. And I'm so grateful to have him in my life.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, now do you see yourself passing this company on to your children in the future?

SPEAKER_00:

So um it's funny. I have a slew full of children, and um, some of them I haven't given birth to, but they're definitely in my life. I call them my neighborhood kids or bonus kids. But um, out of all of them, I think maybe two of them will go down the path in the medical field realm. But um I want to definitely give them the choice to do what they want to do. However, I think that it has been very key to um show them what it means to give back, not only to the community, but also to care for their elders. That is something I grew up knowing to do or teaching or was taught to do, excuse me. And I think it's very important to pass on to the next generation the importance of caring for senior citizens, because they were there to care for us and to raise us. So it's the least that we can do is to make sure that we can give back to them and make their last years, you know, the most comfortable years ever.

SPEAKER_02:

Now, Levi, this has been a great interview today, but one final question that our listeners need to know is where can they go to learn more about a touch of love care home?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, so we are on all social media platforms: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and it's all under a touch of love care home. Um, my personal page on Facebook and um LinkedIn is Lovey Baxter. And we are present on social media a lot. So you can find out a lot of behind the scenes things that go on in our home. You can um learn more about residential care homes by the post that I I put out there and also just encouraging and uplifting posts that's near and dear to my heart, pouring back into others and just building people up.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, that's why we're here at the end of the day, right?

SPEAKER_00:

That is what we're here for.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, Lovey, I really appreciate you being on the show today. We wish you and your business the best moving forward.

SPEAKER_00:

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I appreciate that. And um, again, a touch of love care home. We stay in the community, and our tagline and our mission is providing the care your loved one deserves. So thank you.
