Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a makeup consulting business? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor, Shayla McDonald, with Black Confetti. Shayla, now it is so great to have you on, and we're so excited to learn about your business today. So please start off by telling our listeners just a little bit more about your company.

So it's a consulting firm. I am a makeup artist. I am a consultant, an educator, a lover of all things beauty, and I've been doing makeup in the Dallas Fort Worth area for many years. And now I have learned so much about the industry and about my customers and clients that I've turned it into a consulting business.

Origins And Family Salon Influence

Wow, what a fun industry to be a part of. You know, I know the beauty industry is always expanding and changing. So how did you originally get started in this industry?

You know, my grandmother uh owned a hair salon. And as a young thing, I spent plenty of time at the foot of her chair watching all the go-ins-ons, you know, people coming in and out the door, looking beautiful, coming in looking one way and leaving another way. And it's just, I think it's in my DNA.

Wow. Well, that is so, so amazing. So, what industry did you come from before jumping into the beauty industry? And are you a licensed professional in the industry?

Actually, I have been in this industry since I left cosmetology school. And so, and I haven't ever done anything else. I have been a makeup artist, uh again, a lover of beauty, um, since the 90s, actually since 1990. And so I've been practicing uh my craft since then.

Wow. Now, what is the most common myth or misconception you get asked on the day-to-day when it comes to makeup?

Skincare And Primers Over Layers

Well, the industry, as it comes to the makeup industry, and then the makeup, as it comes to the industry, it's uh something that people are just playing with. Like makeup artists are just uh big kids who want to play with real life Barbies. You know, it's not really taken uh as seriously as I think it should. Um, when actually we are we are not peddling, but we are really touching the core of women when we sit down with them and and and apply makeup to their faces. It's so much more than just going out just to have fun. We're talking, we're we're talking self-esteem. We're talking about self-love, you know, as a makeup artist. And I think that's the misconception that it's just play. It's actually quite serious. Um, and then as far as the makeup piece of it is concerned, um, what's really a big myth is that we have to uh have so many different layers of makeup for the skin to look clear and beautiful and smooth when it's really all about your skincare and your priming products that make the skin appear clear and smooth.

Oh, yes, and I love a good hydrating primer as much as the next person.

Let's go ahead and switch gears here for a second. Let's really dive into the heart of your business. Now we know that the marketing is the heart of every business. So today, who are some of those ideal individuals you would like to help or nurture, and how are you attracting them?

Strategy First: Audience And Environment

You know, primarily uh women who are at the helm of their businesses, uh, those women who are interfacing internationally, um, who are doing um, you know, a lot of face-to-face work, or they're uh in-person, those types of people, again at the helm, the businesswoman that is moving and shaking and making changes. Um that lady, because she is the lady who needs the most help because she wears so many different hats, so many different people rely on her that she barely has time to brush her teeth and get out the door. Right? So um I'm into helping her, and I position myself um in spaces where those women come to shop. That is like the bread and butter of my business. So I'm in those spaces where they come to shop, and then I am able to meet them where they are and talk to them about strategy, not just about just getting the prettiest lipstick that's you know on trend, but I'm talking strategy. What is it that you're doing? What environment are you working at? Who is your audience? Those types of things I ask to help them find the right products.

Now, have you ever thought about having your own podcast for your business before?

I absolutely have. Yes, ma'am, um, because that's certainly part of it. Um, the uh where I'm position out at ground floor, um, which will help me in the community make those connections. And then, of course, obviously a podcast would take me even further.

Mindset Shift: Makeup As Language

Yes, so thank you for asking that question. So, black confetti is all about strategy for the women who shop for cosmetics. I want to uh bust the myths of different products. I want to let you know right here and right now that it's not a 17-step thing to get your makeup on and looking great. I want to help you kind of figure out which products are right for you and help you understand the why of what you're doing when it comes to your cosmetics. Why are you setting underneath your eye? Why are you contouring and highlighting? Why are you wearing red lipstick for this function? If you know the why, you can there's no stopping you. Once you understand the why and you get with me and learn your strategy, no stopping you. You would be unstoppable.

What is the mindset you would like your potential clients to be in when they're looking for beauty products before we close out today?

SPEAKER_00

Just be open and willing to learn and uh think and just see what the possibilities are. It's really all about uh the psychology of makeup, the idea that or the notion that makeup is language, and it's already speaking before you say a word. And once you understand that and you're open to that, you will allow me to take you on a on a on a venture, on a trip to understand color and how it relates to your skin tone and your environment and the people that you're around.
