We at Lori's Language Lab. We help international professionals and their families that have moved into the U.S. not just to get by in English, but to also help them build the spot in their community here in North Texas so that they can thrive while they're here. I love that. And what originally led you into your industry?

From Engineer To Adult ESL Tutor

SPEAKER_01 1:04

I started life as an engineer and English teacher was the farthest thing I ever thought I would be. I did learn project management, problem solving, all of the great engineering skills. I stayed home with my kids. I was helping volunteer at an ESL program. And I ran into a guy that was from Venezuela and needed to get into high-tech construction quickly. And I happened to have a set of drawings, which I had at home, and we went straight to the vocabulary he needed instead of going along the process he was in. And that really just stuck with me as a need that was specific to adults.

Wow. Now, in your industry today, since that experience and just on the day today, what do you feel people often get wrong about understanding what you do?

The Relocation Support Gap

One of the main misconceptions is really like in the corporate environment, when they relocate people to North Texas, they say, oh, their English is good enough. I understand them. They said their spouse's English is good, but they really need more English support and cultural support than they usually get from their relocation program. It's hard to get humor, get cultural context for different things, especially moving into a school or healthcare system that's different. And sometimes it's not only the English, but the cultural aspect that having a private tutor really helps solidify that relocation experience.

And for our listeners who may know someone who is struggling with, you know, transitioning into speaking more English, what are some supportive ways they can show up?

Simple Ways To Support Learners

To help repeat what they're saying incorrectly, just so that they hear the correct way in a communication environment. Would say it's called active listening, where you repeat what you heard. And that really enforces correct grammar and correct word usage in somebody who is not quite there yet in their everyday speech.

Yeah, looking to reach any international professional that has moved into the North Dallas area. It could be in the last six months, in the last 10 years, because a lot of internationals stay and isolate in their own communities. And to help incorporate yourself into the Tech Dallas community, the reason that you move to another country is to be part of the culture that's around you. And so if you know anybody who's struggling with their English, who keeps setting their New Year's goal as I'm going to improve my English, have them reach out to a tutor to help them because it's so much easier with that accountability.

So, Lori, what is one uncommon fact about the statistics of what you do?

Immersion Tutoring Without Bilingual Shortcuts

Uncommon area is that our tutors are not bilingual. So we don't just do English Spanish, English Russian, English, French, English, Chinese. A lot of the best teaching practices are immersion. And so to have an English-speaking tutor helps with the pronunciation and colloquial regional things that we say, the things that are actually specific to Texas and the things that are specific to the US.

And how does incorporating more English into their speech and their day-to-day life really help as far as like opportunities and things like that for some professionals that may be listening?

Confidence At Work School Healthcare

I think there's always a confidence that once you improve your English, you have more confidence to step out and step out into different situations, kind of put yourself out there for better positions. Being more confident in your English helps you not only advocate for yourself at work, but advocate for your kids in school, yourself and your family in the healthcare environment, and just to have fun in your community. The more you reach out, the more people you find, the more fulfilling your life is.

And Lori, where does your heart for helping other people with the language really come from?

My mom was sick for several years, and I spent that time isolating and not reaching out to my community. And I really have a heart for people who are in our community that isolate because of their language barriers. Tutors, we really strive to help our students to know they're not alone, to be seen and be heard, and to look forward to seeing our students every week.
