Take a five-minute break, walk away, set the timer, and let the emotional anchor pass without lecturing. Their brain is flooded with cortisol. They can't process a lecture anyway.

And step two is redirect. Change the method, not the goal. Like that anecdote with Jackson struggling with two-digit edition. Instead of forcing the worksheet, his mom used a YouTube video and physical tens and ones blocks.
