It was 8:30am and Sam, the owner of a small hardware store, was gearing up for one of the busiest Saturdays of the year. A local home improvement Expo was happening nearby, and he'd planned a big sale to bring in the crowds. Sam had everything lined up, flyers posted, inventory stocked and extra staff scheduled, he stood behind the counter reviewing the final details of the promotional setup, then a text came in from his delivery driver, running late, won't get there until noon. It wasn't a major issue, just a shipment of paint cans that wouldn't arrive in time for the morning rush. Still, Sam thought, I better sort this out now. He grabbed his phone and started texting. A follow up question came through, then another by the time Sam set his phone down, 15 minutes had passed, when he finally returned to his checklist. He was distracted and rushed, he had missed a critical step, updating the computers with the sale prices. Customers started arriving, but when that first sale rang up at full price, confusion erupted. Staff scrambled to fix it. Lines started to back up, and a few frustrated customers walked out by the end of the day, Sam knew he had lost sales and many opportunities to turn new visitors into loyal customers. But here's the thing, it wasn't the late delivery that caused the chaos. Was it? It was the distraction, that tiny interruption that pulled Sam out of focus when he needed it most. Does this sound familiar today? We're diving into how distractions block your flow, sabotage your productivity and quietly eat away at your profits, and, more importantly, how to take back control. Let's get started. Well, hello there. Welcome to flow driven leadership, the podcast that transforms visionary entrepreneurs into flow driven CEOs with very high performance workplaces. I'm your host and coach, Dr Dave Maloley, and I believe that entrepreneurs are athletes, and their business is the field of play. Every day is a game, and the outcome of that game depends on whether you're prepared to win or you're not. Here's what I dream of a world where businesses routinely adopt flow as one of their core values. Imagine workplaces where leaders and teams perform in harmony, where challenges are met with collaboration, and where potential is unlocked, not wasted. Flow driven leadership is where high performance and high profit intersect, and that idea is supported by four pillars. First, we have mental optimization, sharpening your mindset to operate at your best as a leader. Then we have flow orchestration, structuring your business for seamless execution. Third, we have courageous communication, building trust and alignment through open candid dialog. And finally, we have team transformation, creating a culture that amplifies collective genius and drives exceptional profitability. Today we're going to be focusing on that second one, flow, orchestration. I want to talk about one of the biggest silent killers of productivity and profits today, and a word distraction, but first, I think we have to get real. Running a business means juggling 1000 priorities at once. You might have emails, texts, customer questions, staff issues, they all demand your attention, and sometimes it feels like there's no way to escape that chaos. Here's the truth, those distractions aren't just annoying. They're sabotaging your success. They're constantly pulling you away from your best work. They're blocking your flow and quietly eating away at your profits. But here's the good news, you can fight back, and you should fight back. In this episode, we're going to cover why distractions are so damaging, how they block your flow and cost you big and some actionable strategies to eliminate distractions and get your focus and your profits back on track. So why are distractions so darn destructive? First and foremost, our brains weren't designed to multitask. I know because I've been there, sometimes attempting to multitask feels like you're super human. You. It makes you feel productive, like you're handling everything at once, but in reality, you're scattered. Multitasking is a myth. Dr Sophie Leroy, a researcher at the University of Washington, Bethel, calls it attention residue, and here's how it works, when you switch tasks like going from checking inventory to answering a text, your brain doesn't fully let go of the first task before moving on to the next. And it gets worse. Research shows that every time you get distracted, it takes an average of 23 minutes to fully recover your focus. That's not just a wasted moment, that's a wasted opportunity to build momentum and flow. So now let's talk about flow. If you've been listening for a while, you'll appreciate that flow is that magical state where everything clicks. You're fully immersed, you're deeply focused and working at your absolute best. Even better, it feels great, but we must appreciate that flow is fragile. Every tiny distraction pulls you out of it and getting back in is going to be challenging. Think about it like trying to run a marathon, but imagine every quarter mile you had to stop and retie your shoelaces, you'd never hit your stride, right? That's what distractions are doing to your focus. Now I'd like to break it down into three areas where distractions hurt you the most. Let's talk about productivity, performance and profits, first, productivity. We've all been there, answering the emails, checking the texts, managing the team issues, and thinking I'm getting so much done, but in reality, you're just busy. And being busy does not mean you're being productive. Dr Clifford Noss from Stanford University, and the author of The Man Who lied to his laptop, states it clearly, the more you multitask, the less deliberative you become, the less you're able to think and reason out a problem. So multitasking doesn't make you productive, it just scatters your attention all over the place. Now let's talk about performance. Imagine you're setting up for a big day at your business. You're focused. You're in the zone. Everything's falling into place, then ping a notification pulls you away when you try to get back in, the flow is gone. You're rushing around, you're missing details, and the quality of your work suffers. The same applies to your team. Finally, let's talk about your bottom line, those profits. Every time those distractions slow you down, they're also going to lead to mistakes and cost you money. Eric Altman, a cognitive scientist at Michigan State University, conducted a study showing that even a four second interruption can triple the number of mistakes you make on a focus intensive task. Now think for a minute about how many tiny distractions you have each day, every single day, every email, every text, every question from staff or a customer, they start to compound. And those mistakes aren't just inconveniences. They lead to missed opportunities. They lead to frustrated team, maybe angry customers, and inefficiencies that quietly chip away your profits. So distractions aren't just stealing your time. Are they? They're stealing your revenue. All right, enough about the problems and the pain. Let's talk about solutions. Here are four ways to eliminate distractions and protect your focus. One, let's create a distraction free zone. Turn off all notifications, maybe put your phone in the other room and keep your workspace clean. That visual clutter is going to lead to mental clutter next time block for deep work. Dr Cal Newport is the author of deep work, and he explains it best, deep work is becoming increasingly rare. At exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable, the few who cultivate this skill and make it the core of their working life will thrive. So how much time can you set aside for focused work? A McKinsey study shows us that executives who are in flow are 500% more productive. So it benefit you and your company to set aside one to two hours every day for focused work.

Three we need to manage those internal distractions sometimes. Because the biggest distractions are in our own head. So start your day with a brain dump. Write down everything on your mind so it's not swirling around while you're at work, so you don't have to remember anything. Also practice mindfulness techniques. They're going to help you refocus when your thoughts start to wander. Finally, it's technology that's creating a lot of this distraction. So let's also leverage the technology for focus. I know there's lots of apps out there. The one that I'm most familiar with is Opal, O, P, a, l, I use it every day on my phone to block the apps I'm most tempted by while I'm working, as we wrap up this conversation, I want to remind you that distractions aren't just stealing your time. They're stealing your success. Every notification, every text, every moment of lost focus adds up, but the good news is you can fight back by creating distraction free zones, time blocking for deep work, managing your internal distractions and using the right tools, you can reclaim your focus, your flow, your productivity, your performance and your profits, and make sure you're role modeling this for your team, because if the leader is distracted, we're bound to have a highly distracted culture. Here's my challenge for you, for your next big task, turn off every distraction. Set a timer for one hour to 90 minutes and focus. Then when it's all done, notice how much more you accomplish and how much better it feels to work without interruptions. I want to thank you for joining me today on this episode of flow driven leadership.
