We caught up with rising “Cali Country” artist Presley Aronson during the high-energy chaos of the Rio Roundup in Las Vegas, where his passion for both music and storytelling was on full display. Presley shared how he’s carving out his own lane in country music, blending West Coast influence with heartfelt, message-driven songwriting. We also dove into his collaboration with country artist Jimmie Allen and what that experience meant for his growth as an artist. From the inspiration behind his anti-bullying anthem “Background” to his journey from acting and filmmaking into music, Presley opened up about using his platform to connect with a younger generation of fans. Building his own brand while staying true to who he is, Presley brought a fresh perspective to the Rio Roundup stage—and to this conversation.

Hey music lovers, it's Byron with Musical Milds Podcast, and I am here with Mr. Presley Aronson and we're in Las Vegas, Nevada at the real roundup. So Presley's one of the artists that's playing on stage at the Lappa Lounge, right? Lappa Lounge and also playing at the Stetson stage. Are you playing on the Stetson stage here or over at the Horseshoe? Here. Here. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So play there twice.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you play there twice. What dates do you play there?
SPEAKER_01On the 5th and the 6th. Okay. So tomorrow and Saturday. Okay. Yeah, so it's a lot of fun. I'm really excited about it. Well, cool.
SPEAKER_02Well, welcome. Thanks for taking time to sit down with us. This is this is always fun. So what we end up doing is a lot of events like this, like the Rio Roundup. We do a lot of music festivals and songwriter festivals around the country. And your PR company reached out to me and said, hey, we have some artists that we would love to have on your podcast. So thank you to them. It's been it's always cool. Now we're we're far enough into this project that we get requests almost weekly from somebody wanting to be on, which is always nice, then I don't have to chase it.
SPEAKER_01Well, big congratulations on that, and I'm excited to be on the show.
SPEAKER_02Well, thank you. Yeah, it's uh it's a lot of fun, you know. To get one, I'm a big music fan. I I I have loved live music for many, many years. My very first concert was actually at 12 years old, Three Dog Night. I don't know if you know who that band is. You know the song Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog. Of course. Yeah. So they wrote that and performed that. So anyway, so that's been a long time ago, but uh, but love live music and we love all types of music and and many different genres, but we really focus on the on the country side of things. So and you so tell me a little bit about you you mentioned as we were getting set up, you you play Cali Country, you're from California.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so born and raised in Canyon Country, California. Okay and you know, just right outside of Los Angeles, and uh so country has always been a part of my life, and and California's always been a part of my life, so I fell in love with country music, and but I wanted to do something a little bit different. I wanted to add a little bit of a pop modern flavor to it that also had a little bit of that touch of popcorn.
SPEAKER_02I'm getting a little bit closer to you there.
SPEAKER_01Sorry about that. Um yeah, I wanted to have a little bit of more of you know California into it, so I wanted to create something that's Cali country, sure, and you know, so that's really exciting for me to be able to add my roots into it, but still having the the songwriting roots and the storytelling aspect of country music into my songs, but having a message behind it, but also having that kind of beachy California flavor, and it just really creates something special. I have my anthem, which is Cali Country, the song. Sure. So that's out now. It's really something that kind of really gives the whole rundown of what Cali Country is to me. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Well, who who being a Californian and and a lover of country music, what inspired you? Did the Bakersfield sound appeal to you? I mean, you know, the Dwight Yoakum and and uh um you know Buck Owens, uh John Party actually, you know, has a little of that in it in his music. What what really spoke to you as far as music? Who who did you listen to growing up?
SPEAKER_01Well, I definitely being in LA, there was a lot of pop and different things that I I definitely started with. And and my my grandmother is a huge uh country fan, and so definitely listening to a lot of the greats and classics through her, and then my mom kind of fell in love with some of the modern country, started listening to, you know, the Thomas Rhett's and Sam Hunts and Luke Bryan and you know Kelsey Ballerini and all the different you know incredible artists, and kind of progressed from there, and I just fell in love. I'm like, this is not only the genre I want to listen to, but this is the genre that I want to make music in. It it's a an amazing community, and it's just incredible to be a part of. Just the storytelling is just next level. I I just I'm a huge fan of storytelling.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Well, that's what country music is about is about. And not just country, but Western music and you know, all those all those roots, you know, the the uh the the the early days of country music, you know, you we talked about you know some of the California sound, but but there's a lot of Merle Haggard, you know, was a Californian and huge there isn't anybody in the music industry that wasn't impacted by Merle Haggard, even the rock stars.
SPEAKER_01Well, even some modern as well. I mean, I think Brett Young is from California, you know, Tyler Rich, a friend of mine, is from California. I mean, there's there's aspects of different things, you know. Kelsey Ballerina spent a lot of time in LA, Thomas Rhett has spent a lot of time in LA. It's just, you know, it's a big hub. Obviously, Nashville is Music City, and it's incredible there. I love it. You know, but obviously LA is a big part of that as well.
SPEAKER_02Well, there are a lot of artists and a lot of uh uh Wiley Guses and I don't know if you know who Wiley in the Wild West are, but Wiley spent uh a big part of the the early and mid-80s in Southern California in that LA area. You know, uh country music was a big thing for many, many years and still has some influences there, but uh yeah.
SPEAKER_01I feel like it's so much more today, to be honest with you, than when I was like growing up a little bit more, because like I feel like today there is country music more in the modern aspect, but country music everywhere you go. You know, before it used to always be pop if you walk in a store or a restaurant or whatever. Now it's anywhere you go, they're playing country music everywhere. I mean, from a coffee shop to anywhere you go, it's it's country music. You know, it's like you know, it's it's making a dent, it's making an impact, and I'm just proud to be a part of it.
SPEAKER_02Well, cool. Well, cool. So tell me now, I think I read in your bio you you play other instruments, correct?
SPEAKER_01So guitar is is one of my main instruments. Sure. Also piano, right? And uh I'm a I'm a drummer. I uh I played a bunch of drums in some different rock bands growing up. Cool stuff. So it was uh it it helps me when writing, it helps me when performing, just to be able to have a sense of a rhythm and beat and stuff. I think it's yeah, you know, it's it makes a big, big difference.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Oh, I don't think there's any question about it. Any any aspect of the music industry that you could any instrument you can pick up and play. Now I'm uh uh I I play the guitar, I don't play it well, but I've only been playing for two years. But I started 50 years ago and then laid it down. Wish I'd have stuck with it. But I find myself, I have a piano in my house, and I find myself now leaning towards the piano and wanting to go sit down and and and plunk on the piano a little bit too.
SPEAKER_01So uh each instrument has its own incredible aspect, you know, not only when building out a song, but also writing a song. Like there's times that I've written on guitars and sometimes different guitars create different songs. Oh yeah. You know, writing on a on a piano, like I've written a song that has absolutely no piano in the entire song, but it was all written on a piano. And it's just like it's something that creates something special, especially if it's like something a little bit has a little bit more emotion in it. Sure. You know, that's something that's kind of really cool to be able to feel it while you're writing as well, to be able to kind of portray that to the audience and the listeners. And also, like, I was just talking to one of my producers the other day. He's like, we gotta get in the studio and really just push on starting with drums. Because just feeling like sometimes having those like banger songs that you know just gets everybody up and moving. Right. You know, sometimes you gotta start with the drums and we build from there and just really be able to feel it, you know, deep inside.
SPEAKER_02Sure, sure. Well, you know, you got I mean, Carrie Underwood can play the drums and oh yeah, and is a badass on the drums. You know, there's some great great artists that can play the drums, you know, and so and and it and it's a it's a key part of the sound. I mean, obviously, I love an acoustic sec, I love a songwriter round. Um, that's my favorite. I've I've I've lean I lean towards the songwriter festivals and the songwriter rounds, listening rooms, because you can hear everything. As I get older, and maybe your dad can relate to this, but I I I have trouble hearing because one, I shot too many guns as a young man without hearing protection and listen to way too much loud music as I was a kid as well. But I I have a real appreciation for that songwriter round, you know, to to to sit in a room and hear the story about the song. Now, you talked about a little bit of uh uh uh what you're you're about is anti-bullying. Tell us a little bit about that, and you have a nonprofit as well, so I do.
SPEAKER_01So I'm I'm a survivor or victim of bullying when I was younger, you know, physically, mentally, and emotionally. And you know, I I wanna make it I wanted to make it my mission to really help others out there. So I wrote a song, it's called Background, and it really just has like the aspect of my life story with it, but also an uplifting aspect that we're not supposed to be in the background. We gotta keep our heads held high, eyes in the sky, feet planted on the ground. And you know, it really I never really had much of a support system that got me through it. My parents were great, you know, school didn't really do anything. Sure. And that was rough. And I I had it bad, but there's a lot of kids out there that have it a lot worse that end up in the hospital. And you know, that's just it's so not okay. So I wanted to create something that can make a difference, that can spread awareness, and it's helped save a lot of lives. And you know, I'm very humbled to say that. So we wanted to continue the mission and and form a nonprofit foundation called the Background Foundation.
SPEAKER_00Sure.
SPEAKER_01Which we help kids and teens that are affected by mental health challenges, suicidal intentions, um, bullying, and and really help them guide them through that and be able to help provide some counseling that you know a lot of times they don't have access to, provide some self-defense classes so that they can protect themselves. You know, those are some those are things that really make a difference. And a lot of my music is rooted from that and different messaging. Like Live Like Paradise is a fun summer song, but it's got positive messaging in it to, you know, keep our mind to find an outlet in life, you know, along with my song Love for the Wind, Jimmy Allen. You know, that's all about you know the fight against suicide, taking love for the wind, and and you know, it's it's free to be nice and a smile is contagious.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's free to be nice and it's and it's listen, no one's ever gonna remember gr when you were growing up, you know, who who was on the best little league team or the best base football team, or who who won the awards at school the most popular, but they will always remember how you made them feel. And so I appreciate that. Yeah, that's important. My my wife's made it very uh that's that's a goal of hers was to make sure everybody felt acknowledged and important.
SPEAKER_01Really makes a big difference in people's lives.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. No doubt. So you you mentioned Jimmy Allen, so let's talk a little bit about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so Jimmy uh incredible artist, yeah, and you know, he's got a little bit of a fashion sense too.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um, but you know, we had this this song that we wanted to push out, and you know, I was fortunate enough to he was interested in collaborating on it, and he was one of the co-writers on it, and you know, it's now out. It's just something that's kind of special for us to be able to put out, and you know, there's things that he's struggled with personally, and stuff that I've struggled with, so to be able to have you know two artists that can relate and to help others heal through music is something that's really special to us.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I I I don't think there's any question, you know. The uh I I had the privilege of interviewing a songwriter um from Nashville at the very first songwriter festival I went to to do interviews, and uh uh James Dean Hicks, and I don't know if you know who James Dean is, but he wrote he had uh several number ones with the Oak Ridge boys, but he he said uh music is the salve that heals all. So and I agree. Whether it's a broken heart, whether it's uh you know bro uh hurt feelings, right? You know, I mean it can do a lot for you.
SPEAKER_01It's everything. I mean, for me when writing, you know, it's it's a matter of relating to people that are going through other situations, and sometimes they can take what I've written about and you know relate it to their specific situation. Sure. And whether it is something happy or you know, fun summer song, or you know, something that's a a love song or a breakup song or something that's a little bit more rooted into like the bullying or whatever it is, like you know, there's so many people in the world, we're not the only ones that's going through it. And that's something that I try to push out as well, is that you're not alone in no matter what you're going through. Sure. Whether you're on top of the world or you're in the biggest hole struggling. Sure. Like we're gonna get through it. There's light at the end of the tunnel. Yep. And I always say, like, you know, I go around across the country, whether if I'm on tour, I like to stop at a lot of the different schools and boys and girls clubs and Salvation Army youth centers and different things, or you know, a lot of times I'll go out and play and and speak to the kids and stuff, and I like to just say, listen, you know, whatever you're going through is only temporary. So never choose a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And I'm living proof that you can get past it. I broke out of it. Yeah. And so, you know, being somewhat close in age to them, it's it makes a big impact that it doesn't just go in one ear out the other. Yeah. They actually retain information and the advice. And you know, I'm humbled and and honored to say that I've I've definitely helped save countless lives.
SPEAKER_02Well, I think that's a wonderful uh cause. Um my my son, he he got involved with a comp uh with a business called Stay. And and I don't know if you're familiar with that but that brand, but you know, they do clothing and different things, you know. Just remember, you know, up stay. It's worth it. Stick around. Absolutely. You know, and and it's a it's a sad, sad deal. I you know, I mean, I know plenty of people who have chosen that out, and it's it it it's i i i uh it's never easy for everybody that's left, right? That's the easy way out. You're transferring your pain to your your loved ones. And and it's generational trauma that that will go on for generations, literally. I mean, young young kids who who choose to do that or young parents who choose to do that and leave children, it just has an impact on those children for the rest of their lives. And you know, children of of uh you know, surviving children of suicide tend to take their own lives later, you know, and it sucks. It's a tough deal. Well, let's talk about happy things. How about you how about you play us something? You got that guitar in your laugh. Let's uh play it, play us a little something. What is what was the first song you ever wrote that you cut?
SPEAKER_01Uh probably my debut single, She's All Mine. Play that for us. Alright, we can play a little She's All Mine. Yeah. Said it up. Alright. So She's All Mine is is a love story that is just rooted in true, like young first love. And it's just a matter of like finding this perfect girl and and you know, the idea of that she's gonna be with you forever. Sure. So we we have a really cool music video for this one. We shot it all in like Malibu, the Palisades area, obviously now that a lot of that's gone. Um, but we have that and we have a lot of it in Catalina Island, which is off the coast of LA. Really, really cool stuff, so it's great music videos. But so this is uh she's all mine. This is how it went down. Let me tell you my side. Can't believe we met now. Out of all of my life, on a tree to like a butterfly store, beautiful blue eyes and bonnet and black canoline, bumin' no speakers, starting the cali coast, my voice on time While I'm holding you close, I can't believe I find the girl for my dreams we've gotta go right now Do everything as a team She's all mine, she's on mine, living with me, she's on man, she's on mine, living with me.
SPEAKER_02Thank you, that's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. Yeah, that's it's cool to play, you know, something a little bit from the past. So uh so how old were you when you wrote that? Uh I was I think it was eighteen. Eighteen. Yeah. That girl's still in your life? Unfortunately not. No. She's actually uh recently passed away, unfortunately.
SPEAKER_02Sorry to hear that. Yeah. Well, it now means even more, right?
SPEAKER_01It does, it really does. So it's something special. And we get to play it at all the shows. I usually bring up a girl out of the audience. Okay. And um and you know, so it just everybody looks forward to that at shows and stuff to be that girl. I give them her some roses, it's some one of the lyrics in the song. So it's it's kind of something fun and special to be able to do.
SPEAKER_02Cool. Cool, cool.
SPEAKER_01So how much touring are you doing? We've been doing a lot. I mean over the last few years, it's it's been a lot of fun. You know, it's it's obviously there's a lot to it to tour. And you know, sometimes we're doing smaller shows, sometimes we're doing bigger shows, and you know, I just I live for every moment of it. It's so magical to get out on stage. The energy from the crowd is incredible. You know, getting to debut new songs and and you know, all the other aspects to be able to do interviews like this and be able to go and stop at those boys and girls clubs and schools and different things, just be able to kind of mix it all together. You know, I like to give back a lot. Doesn't allow for a lot of downtime, but you know, I gotta I gotta do what I love to do. Sure.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's cool. I I I like that. What uh what's your what's been your favorite venue to play at? Do you have one?
SPEAKER_01Hmm, that's a good question. Um I mean, there's definitely some like highlight pieces of my my career so far, and there's gonna be a lot more. Well you're young. But uh I mean I I headlined the Catalina wine mixer.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01That was pretty fun. Okay. Um I another kind of fun thing is I I was direct support to Tyler Rich um playing uh in the Charlotte Thanksgiving parade. Okay. So that was that was just a blast of a time to be out there. So many people and families, and yeah, so some definitely some fun ones and you know.
SPEAKER_02Have you spent much time in Nashville?
SPEAKER_01I spent a good amount of time in Nashville, and this next year we're gonna be spending a lot more time in Nashville. Okay. So kind of excited about that, getting a little bit more into my roots of country, and sure. And we actually shot uh a music video, a chunk of it out in Nashville for an upcoming release. Cool. Um so I'm excited about putting that out. Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_02What um I'd like to ask everybody, if you could work with anyone, I'm gonna ask you two two versions of that. Okay. Dead, and then I'm gonna ask you alive.
SPEAKER_01Who? Uh Dead, probably Toby Keith.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. Great.
SPEAKER_01Um Alive. There's so many options. Who who would I not want to work with? But I mean, I think I think Luke Bryan is somebody that's incredible. I mean, I just I admire him so much. Yeah. And just who he is as a person on and off stage.
SPEAKER_02Sure, sure. Yeah, he's got quite a story, right? Raised his brother's kids, right?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, and yeah, yeah. Very talented artist.
SPEAKER_01And an incredible performer.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. He's I've never seen him live, so I can't I can't honestly. Say that. Oh my gosh. But but there's so there's no replacing live music. I mean, I I you I can listen I can listen to your music, but there's no comparison from listening to you on on Spotify to in person, right? And so that's my first love.
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. I mean, Luke is is incredible. I've seen him more times than I can count. Okay. He's having more fun than we are.
SPEAKER_02Sure, sure. Sure. Well, does he does the he does his uh uh he used to do the big playa, right? The Crash My Playa.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, crash my playa. He does it every year. Does he still do it? He does. And I've been to I've been there a bunch of times. Oh, have you? I'm going again this year. Okay. So I think it's the 11th year this year he's doing it. And it's it's in the is it in the panhandle of Florida or is it It's in Cancun.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's in Cancun.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Cancun, Mexico. It's a blast of a time. Oh. Dustin Lynch is like the official mayor. Oh, is he? Yeah, he's great. Yeah. And you know, just it's just so different than any other show that you can go to. It's just letting loose. There's pool parties during the day, concerts, there's beach concerts at night. It's just it's a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_02Especially if you're young. I'm a little old for that, but I still love all the live music. And I would I can I can hang with those guys. I really could. Absolutely. So um let me ask you this. How about female artists? What female artists would you like to work with to like to do a duet?
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. I think you know, Kelsey Ballerini, she's a gorgeous, you know, it's like Megan Moroney, um Carrie. I mean, you can't. You know, and uh it would be like legendary to do something with like Dolly. Oh I mean, yeah. I can just keep naming names. Sure, sure.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Yeah. Well, you know, even like Loretta, she's gone now, but cool.
SPEAKER_01Incredible artist out there.
SPEAKER_02Well, play me one more song before we get out of here. This has been fun. It's always good to get to meet new people. Oh yeah. Well, thank you so much for having me. I really appreciate it. This episode of Musical Miles Podcast is sponsored by Stetson, a true symbol of Western heritage and American craftsmanship. For generations, Stetson has stood for quality, style, and authenticity. Stetson, built for those who live the music and the lifestyle. What are you gonna play? What do you want to hear? Uh I don't know. You tell me. You got something uh unreleased that you're willing to play? Unreleased. Something you're working on, something you've got in the works. I believe it or not, you'd be amazed how many guys play me unreleased music. So which is always fun.
SPEAKER_01I can I can play a little bit of unreleased. Okay. This one is uh it's something that's coming.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Um and this won't be out for a little bit anyway, so okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, this is this is something that's coming, and it's kind of a fun summer song. Okay. And uh it's got a little bit of comedy in it. Okay. It's uh it's about basically going on a on a trip. And you know, there's a girl involved in it, but it's mainly about going on a trip, and you wish you would have bought a one-way rather than a round trip to the game. Okay, I like that. So it goes a little something like this. Didn't know when we took off that a bag's about to get lost. She looked at me and laughed and said, What are we gonna wear? At the airport strip mall, definitely getting ripped off. Put some off-print clothes we'll never use again. But what would I get to do it all again? I remember the slow tin leagues on my dashboard, every song that she played on the ice cord. And her eyes on me saying, baby, let's never leave. I remember the waves scratching out on the north shore, like two first timers on a surfboard, and so many miles between us and time around 23. We should have bought a one-way. Uh oh, uh oh, uh, uh, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, uh, uh oh. Surprised you with a bow ride from a catchy-looking website. Thought the captain wouldn't know how to drive. Tell my back. Got a feeling in my stomach, cause it's all that side. Praying one that we could be it for the rest of lives. Listen, mommy, it's feeding for eyes. I remember those long tail days on my dashboard. Every song that she played on the ice code. And her eyes on me saying, baby, let's never leave. I remember the witch crashing down on the north shore. Like two first times on a circle. And so many miles, we lost in the summer when I'm 23. We should have bought a one away.
SPEAKER_00Ow ow uh uh owl. Ow owl owl ow owl.
SPEAKER_02That's a little sneak peek of some of it. That's fun. That's a fun song. I love it. And and you know, I've traveled a lot. I traveled a lot for a living for years, and and I've lost my luggage more than once. So yeah. Well, that thank you so much. Yeah, this has been awesome. Oh, it's been so much fun.
SPEAKER_01I always like to say it's a blast of the time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I appreciate you having me out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, thank thanks thanks again to your PR group to to uh get this lined out. Shout out to them. They're amazing. Yeah, much appreciated.
