What is going on, ladies and gentlemen? Welcome back to the Let's Talk About It podcast. The podcast where we cover all types of things MLB related. We got you covered with the latest news, rumors, scorching hot takes, in-depth analysis, and all that good stuff. Ryan Tyler Barbaras, the creator and co-host of Let's Talk About It. Join with me is my right hand man, Clay Selgenrockin' the nice throwback Orioles lit on. Clay, I like it. How are you doing, man?
SPEAKER_01Thank you, thank you. I'm good, man. How are you? Uh it's a good good Thursday. It's finally starting to warm up a little bit. We are seven days away from opening day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, this is a this is a baseball podcast, but it's hard to deny that. In approximately an hour, we're in like 20 minutes. March Madness is going to be starting. And by the time this is released, uh, we're probably going to release this uh Friday morning. We're recording on Thursday, but March Madness is just so much fun. And I think the round of 64 and the round of 32 games really help me not be as eager for opening day. Because like there's so much stress in the air with opening day. And that's like, all right, well, instead, when I'm all when I'm all in in in shambles because of opening day, it's like I can fall back on college basketball and March Madness. Hopefully, Tennessee can win. Uh Clay, what's your team? Who are you rooting for this year in March? You got a squad?
SPEAKER_01It's it's funny, not you know, obviously, I cheer for the Turps in basketball, and I've always cheered for the dogs and uh and football, but uh, you know, it they obviously suck this year, so you know, I just I'm excited for a good tournament. I want to see some upsets, you know. I just I don't want to see Duke win.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think that besides that, I think just you know, just seeing some fun, maybe seeing SEC team win pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00All right, so you can be like a uh underdog uh prop propagandist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this is like the one year where I just feel like I'm I'm kind of I mean, usually the turps are in it or there's something exciting. College basketball has just not excited me this year. You know, obviously I hope Cam Boozer is a uh a Maverick at some point in the next few months, but you know, I guess we'll see.
SPEAKER_00I guess we're just gonna have to wait and see. Um, but we have a super, super fun episode for you guys. If you guys checked out our last episode, we we kind of broke down the the world baseball classic and we also went into our American League East uh predictions with some breakout players. So in this episode, we're gonna hammer out the AL West and the AL Central. So we're gonna go down, um, predict each team's records, their standings, their breakout players, um, and all that stuff. But before we get into that, let me tell you about our sponsor, O Squared at Residential Design. Look, we know what it takes to build a winning team, and O Square knows what it takes to build winning spaces. They're a woman-owned, family operated company right here in the state of Maryland, specializing in kitchen and bathroom renovations. Whether you're looking to restore, replace, or completely remodel, they deliver excellence in every square inch. Check them out at osquaresign.com. That's osquaresign.com. All right, Claytrain. We're gonna start with the American League West, because in my opinion, I think this is gonna be one of the more competitive divisions in all of baseball. And, you know, as of late, it hasn't really been that competitive. It's been super top-heavy. Uh, the Angels, the Athletics, even the Mariners were kind of like the laughing stocks for um quite some time. But now it's like every one of these teams has had or the Astros, Rangers, and Mariners have all had great success over you know this half decade. And um, I don't think that's a coincidence at all. I think it just proves how good this division really is. But I think it's only gonna get better. And uh the athletics, they're a young team, they're hungry, their offense, I think, could be top 10, maybe even top five in all of baseball. You know, the Los Angeles Angels, they have made moves uh to get some maybe high upside arms. Grayson Rodriguez, Alec Manoa. We'll see how those guys pan out. But they've they've been making moves. The mariners are gonna be the mariners, Alec Manoa.
SPEAKER_01Alec Manoa, that's like me saying I got a gym membership, like a high upside arm. Yeah, right. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, to be fair, like he still has the stuff, he just can't locate. So it's like same with like Grayson Rodriguez. He has the stuff, can't stay healthy, can't locate. So I don't know, like, I don't hate that idea of just trying to fix a guy that was once a Cy Young runner up.
SPEAKER_01No, I don't hate it. I I think they're just throwing throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks. I think that's I mean, that's kind of what the Angels have had to do for the last 10 years because they've overpaid a lot of dumb, you know, a lot of guys that they shouldn't have paid. And they kind of put themselves in a scenario where they kind of had to. So uh, you know, I think it's unfortunate, but as we'll see in our predictions, you know, I feel like we might be seeing a little different on the Angels, but maybe a little similar depending on how I read you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fair enough. Well, since we're on the topic of the Angels, I may as well start my record predictions for and I got the Angels at five. Is anyone surprised? I mean, like, come on, they're gonna be 71 and 91, they're gonna scratch 70 wins. I really want the Angels to like actually put a good roster around Mike Trout, but I think it's impossible for them to actually do that. Um, while he's never healthy and he's also making$30 plus million dollars a year. Now, I like some of their young pieces. Um, Zach Neto, I really like. I think he could be a top eight shortstop in baseball, maybe top five. There are just so many good shortstops, but I love Zach Neto. I think Nolan uh Shanoel's fun, Logan O'Hopy. Can he, you know, really break out? They have some intriguing arms, and um how am I forgetting him? He's a Tennessee Vol. He throws 105 miles per hour. Ben Joyce. Ben Joyce. Ben Joyce. Yep, they've got Ben Joyce, um Grayson Rodriguez still, uh George Soriano or Jorge Soriano. Like they've got talent in that on that team. I think it's just a matter of whether or not Trout can be healthy to lead those guys. And you know, I don't really want to put all my eggs in the angels basket of Trout staying healthy because when he doesn't stay healthy, this team isn't very, very good. So I got them going at 71 and 91. But there is a player that I think is gonna really break out for them this year, and that being Tennessee Vol, Christian Moore. I mean, it Moore got 184 played appearances last year, had a 198 batting average, but he walked at a pretty solid rate, 284 on base, had a 370 slug, his OPS was 655, but his defense was good. He was still a positive war player somehow. He was a 0.1 war guy. Um, he has a lot of power, he's a base stealing threat. I think that's a guy that at second base this year, maybe you start him off a little bit lower. I know that you lost guys like Luis Rangifo. I'm pretty sure they lost Johan Mancata, too, if I'm not mistaken. Um, so you need you need some guys to come in and play the infield. So maybe they rush more up a little bit more, but I think you send him down for a couple weeks, give him some more development down at triple A, maybe even double A, and then bring him back up in in in May. And this is a guy that I think in his peak is an 800 OPS player with gold glove defense. I mean, Christian Moore, that guy can hit. He's a professional hitter. I saw that at Tennessee when he was here represent. And um, I don't know, like I've got a feeling, Clay. I like Christian Moore a lot.
SPEAKER_01And I agree with you. I I think it's funny we're questioning whether the Angels are okay with uh rushing prospects up. I think we've seen the last three years that I don't think that they believe in the minor league system. So, you know, it wouldn't shock me if unfortunately they don't do what's right for him, but who knows? We'll see. You want me to go ahead and take over with my angel prediction?
SPEAKER_00Uh just give me your give me your five. Give me your five who you have in fifth.
SPEAKER_01All right, in fifth, I have the Los Angeles Angels, just like you do. Um, I have them actually going 69 and 93, so just two games off. You said um, you know, I I I think that there's gonna be some positives and some negatives with that team this year. I I think you're gonna see Mike Trout play 130 games this year, and he's gonna kind of remind people of who he is, whether they're DHing for some of them or not. I think you're gonna finally see Mike Trout be fully healthy and have a 35 homer year. You know, I think that's gonna be one of the bright spots. I think, like I said, the team's gonna finish for 69 wins. I just don't think the pitching side's enough, and I don't think that they like I don't think they're gonna really put it all together. What scares me about that team is I could see them trading Mike Trout uh at the deadline.
SPEAKER_00No way. I I I'd be sure.
SPEAKER_01I I I think we're at the point where Trout's gonna be what 34, and I I think we're gonna be getting to the deadline. And I just think there's no clear direction with that team. I I think we're gonna be at the point where yes, they're gonna win 69 games this year and they have young talent, but I also don't think that they have enough. I don't think that it's anything in the next two to three years that they'll be able to suffice and make worth Mike Trout's time and at 34 years old, it's not gonna shock me if he wants to go play for a winner. I mean, the Phillies, I mean, obviously Johan Rojas isn't that good. That would be a good fit. You know, they need center field help, and the Phillies are kind of I mean, the Phillies are also in that prime spot for Trout because they're kind of towards the end of that window of theirs. And I and I think that uh, you know, I I could see them going all in and saying, you know, eff it, if this doesn't work out, we'll rebuild for a couple years. But I mean, they uh wouldn't show you.
SPEAKER_00Wow, and then Mike Trout on the oh wouldn't that be awesome? Mike Trout on the Phillies. That that offense would absolutely rake. Oh god. So you got the Angels at yeah, exactly, until October. I mean, I think the Angels could trade could trade Mike Trout. I just don't think they're like that's uh realm of possibility this year, maybe next year, but he's under contract for what three more years, uh three or four. He's making thirty million dollars a year. Like that's a big salary expense that you're taking on for a guy that don't know.
SPEAKER_01We just saw Boba Shick get fucking 42 million dollars.
SPEAKER_00So I mean that is a good point.
SPEAKER_01Like I agree with you, 30 million dollars is hunting. I mean, when five years ago, six years ago, you would have told me you know, 30 million dollars. I mean, I remember when Jack Carl Stanton got paid by the Marlins, and it was like, holy shit, like nowadays you get 30 30 million dollars, like Ranger Suarez just got 26. Like, it's you know right. So I don't know. I mean, it's I think I think if like I said, if Mike Trout plays how I think he's going to and plays 130 games, and you're getting to late July, and he's you know played you know most of their games and he's hitting 280, he's you know got 25 homers. I I can see the Phillies being like, hey, you know what, let's do this, especially knowing they don't have any center field depth for the playoffs besides Brandon Marsh.
SPEAKER_00Well, if you trade away Trout, you're essentially banking on him, or if you tr if you acquire Trout and you still have no center field depth, you're basically not getting any center field depth, you're just getting a better player because I don't know if you could consider Trout to be a guy that can stay healthy. Anyways, we got to move on the list here a little bit. That would be awesome though, Clay. I honestly never really thought of that possibility of the Phillies, but now that you kind of broke it down, it does make a little bit of sense. Bring the kid home. All right. Um, at number four on my list, I got the athletics. Um now I was really, really close to you know making them like an 80-win team. I have them at 78 and 84. Um, I was really close to making them an 80-win team. I love their offense, and that's why I think they win 78 games. I I like their offense is is gonna be disgusting. I mean, Brent Rucker is a walking 30 30 home run, 90 RBI guy. Nick Kurtz, I don't expect him to, you know, replicate his rookie year, but I wouldn't be shocked if he did. He's that good of a player. Um Lawrence Butler, I think, has a breakout year. He was one of my breakout players, or he was my breakout player for the A's. Like, it was only in 2024 where he posted a 3.0 award in 125 games. He had an 807 OPS. He uh stole 18 bases, hit 22 home runs. Like, this is still a very, very good player, but his batting average just dips significantly, and his slugging dips significantly. Um, so I think that right now, I think Lawrence Butler is a guy that if he plays well, that's a leadoff hitter or that, or that's a two-hole hitter uh behind, you know, Jacob Wilson. And that's a guy that's gonna drive and run, steal some bases, and play great defense in the outfield. I don't think he's gonna have another season like he did last year, where he had a 710 OPS, still posted a 1.9 war, but it's like, I don't think this is the offensive, the the type of offensive player Lawrence Butler is, you know, 710 OPS guy. I think he's better than that. I I would not be surprised if he climbed up to 800 again, but I'm predicting mid to high 700s out of Lawrence Butler this year. But yeah, Clay, this offense is firepower, man. It's it's absolute dynamite. They just got Jeff McNeil too. Uh Jacob Wilson is great. Zach Geloff go on a count out. He's a good little player. Um I blank you on like Denzel Clark. We'll see if he can get the back going, but they have a really good mix of great offense and great defense. Shea Lang Alear's. Um, this is a good baseball team. Uh, the one thing that I don't like is their bull is their bullpen and their pitching rotation. I think their pitching still lacks. Depends on if you get world baseball classic version of Luis Severino. If you do, you're good. You'll win 102 games. Um, I'm joking, of course. But yeah, I'm just oh, I forgot about Tyler, Tyler Soderstrom, too. He's he's nails. Um, yeah, I just don't love their their their rotation. I don't trust anyone there. Um, their bullpen isn't great either. I'm just excited to see what this offense can do, uh, especially with guys like Leah Dallas DeVries coming up. Does Jamie Arnold get called up this year? Um, they have so many players in that farm system that they've really, really revamped. I'm just excited to see how this team performs once again in the minor league ballpark. And I think they're gonna, you know, improve their win total from last year. And that's all you can ask for. All you can ask for from a team that's been historically bad for a very, very long period of time. Clay, Hugh, you got at four A's.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got the A's at four. Uh, I have them a little better than you actually. Funny enough, you know, after our little debate about a month ago, I I have the A's going 83 and 79. I I I think at four? Wow. At four. So, like I said, I I I see the AL West, and you know, as we talked about last episode, the AL East being very, very good this year.
SPEAKER_00Um, four teams making the playoffs out of the AL East. I did. I did. I wonder if are are two gonna make it from here? Like, are they gonna fill out the no? They have to if no, they're not four. If wow, so you think the American League is just gonna be like the greatest league.
SPEAKER_01Besides the central, besides the central one.
SPEAKER_00Okay, central's gonna be like 84 wins capped out.
SPEAKER_01But no, so I have the A's winning 83. I think I think what I love about the A's, and you kind of touched on it a bit, is is Jeff McNeil. I think Jeff McNeil is gonna have uh a much bigger impact on this team than war will ever show. I think he has it just just in the clubhouse. I mean, I you know, with Mark Kate back at the helm, I mean, those are two guys that can really lead a group of young guys. I think Jacob Wilson takes another step this year. It wouldn't shock me if he makes another all-star game. Nick Kurtz, I mean, what stands out to me, and I agree with you, their bullpen is gonna be their their downfall this year and their pitching, they just don't have it in my eyes. I I do think you see them get really hot towards the end of the year. I think you're gonna see in August and September them they play good baseball. And I think it's really gonna push them to be successful come next year. And I think it's gonna lead them into a great offseason if hopefully it's not a long extended offseason. But right, you know, I I I just they have the young talent, like you said. I mean, I there's not much else I can say about that. But getting Jeff McNeil to me, that's why he's my breakout player with that team. I don't think that he's gonna be like a sturdy homer guy, but uh he's that glue guy that this team needed, that veteran that this team really, really needed. Not that Brent Rooker wasn't doing that, but Brent Rooker hadn't seen eyes from another organization. Jeff McNeil is coming from the second biggest city in the country, you know, playing in front of New York media to now playing in front of the Sanford San Sacramento Chronicle. So, you know, it's it's a it's a different world, I'll say that. But they're building great momentum heading towards Vegas, I'll say that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree, Clay. And um, they uh they the A's kind of remind me of like where the Orioles were in 2022. They have a lot of good prospects. Uh, you know that they had that they were gonna have a really, really good offense. They drafted well, they have made good trades, used their assets nicely. You know, Jeff McNeil is kind of that that Adam Frazier type guy, you know, like uh like a leader, a veteran. Now he's not gonna be flashy, he's not gonna have an 870 OPS and absolutely win the American League West for you, but he will be your glue guy, like you said, and uh and guys like Jeff McNeil, they help build character and they help establish culture, and that's what the A's need right now, like you said, Clay, especially with them uh moving to Vegas. They are building some good momentum. Um, I think 78 and 84 is fair. You think what 83 wins?
SPEAKER_01So 83, 82, 83.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right in the same, you know, area there.
SPEAKER_01Um teams had shitty owners at the time, the O's and Exactly, exactly.
SPEAKER_00And now they're things are trending up a little bit now. Crazy what uh what management does for your baseball teams and what they don't do for your baseball teams. Uh coming in at number three on my list, maybe a little bit surprising. I got the Texas Rangers at 82 and 80. Now I was going back and forth and back and forth about if I want to have the Rangers win the division and be healthy, or if they I want them just to have another disappointing year. And this is where I'm at. Their pitching rotation, it got better-ish. Like Mackenzie Gore is a good ad, but he's been really bad in spring training. He's a guy that just has a lot of upside. He he's not really a floor raiser, he's a ceiling elevator, or he's not a floor elevator, he's a ceiling raiser. Nathan Avoldi, can he stay healthy? He's what, 35, 36 years old? He's a great pitcher when healthy, but it's gonna be hard for him to pitch to the tune of a 1.8 ER ERA like he did last year. And then Jacob deGrom, obviously, he's nails when he's healthy, and he was healthy last season. So I'll give him props for that. But it's like, how much more, how much weight can those three guys pull? Now, the pitching rotation I think can be good if obviously Mackenzie Gore is the type of pitcher that we all think he can be and will be. Nathan Yavoldi, can he stay healthy and can he replicate what he did last year? DeGrom, just be Jacob de Grom. But I think that the big X factor in this rotation is Jack Leiter because he was really, really good last season. He uh in um spring training too, so far, he's been solid. Uh four games started, 12 innings of work. Uh he has a 4-5 ERA with a 1.5 whip. The hits are really, really poor, 11.3 hits per nine, but he's only walking two batters per nine. He has nine strikeouts per nine. It's a good player. Then in 2025, he had a 3.86 ERA in 29 starts, one five uh in 151 and two-thirds innings. This is a good player, and the hits were down to 7.5 hits per nine, 8.8 strikeouts per nine. Like, this is a really interesting player that I think can be the de facto X factor for this Rangers team. Kumar Rocker as well. Now, their bullpen does worry me, not a little bit, but a lot. Who's your closure gonna be? Uh um the guy that they made the trade for the lefty. Why am I blanking? It's not Robert Garcia. It is Robert Garcia. Robert Garcia, is he gonna be your closer? I don't really like their bullpen. Like, they don't have a whole lot going there. I don't know. I like I I know baseball, I talk about it, but I couldn't really name you a whole lot of people in this Rangers bullpen. Um, their offense though, it it should it should be great. Will it be great? I don't know. If Corey Seager can only play a hundred games, they won't make the playoffs. Um they got they did a full roster reconstruction traded away, Simeon traded away uh or or cut Garcia. Got rid of Jonah Haim, like a lot of new faces. You bring in uh Brandon Nimo, which I think is good. I think Wyatt Langford, honestly, is going to be an all-star this season. I think he's great. He'll, I think he's gonna lap Seeger within the next year or two for best player on that team. Um, I just don't want to invest in a team that is so injury prone, so screwed in uh not salary cap, but they don't have a lot of, you know, flexibility financially. Um, a team with a weaker farm system, especially a team that's just straight away five top prospects or five top 30 prospects for Mackenzie Gore. Like, where's your depth now coming from? Um, that's not an investment that I want to make, but with that being said, they still win 82 games because they have a good roster on paper. Just don't think they stay healthy enough to win 89, 90 games win that division.
SPEAKER_01Well, uh this this is where we uh are gonna differ a little bit. Yeah. You you touched on the Rangers really well, but that being said, I do have the Astros finishing in third a couple games behind the Rangers. Um, I have the Astros going 84 and 78. I I think this is a team that you're gonna see Yordon Alvarez have 40 homers and be the Jordan Alvarez that we see. I think you're gonna see Hunter Brown be a uh top three Cy Young winner or finisher again. I just don't think they have the depth. I don't think they have the pitching. I don't think that I don't think that they can completely stay healthy. I don't I just think they're too old. I think Jose Altuve is getting up there in age, Carlos Correa ain't the same guy that he was. Jeremy Peña, I mean he I don't I'm not a Jeremy Pena believer, so it's just I think they do enough.
SPEAKER_00But he has a really high war. But Jeremy Pena has a really high war all the time. He's a very valuable player. That's what Astros fans tell me.
SPEAKER_01All the time, dude. All the time. You know, I I I I think the Astros still could be dangerous, but I just don't think they're immortal anymore. I I just don't. I think that's there's not much to say about them. They're gonna be the Astros, but I just don't think they have enough oomph to get them over to where they might be this year.
SPEAKER_00Fair enough. You know, Clay, we differ, but we didn't really differ that much because I have the Astros at 84 and 78 as well. I just think that gets them second in the division, not third. Um, I think it's safe to say that the Houston Astros dynasty is like almost officially over, which is honestly kind of crazy to say. Oh, gotta fix my camera real quick, which is kind of crazy to say.
SPEAKER_01Flacco was a quarterback when their dynasty started.
SPEAKER_00I mean, yeah, and now he's what now he's still in the league somehow, but you know somehow, but yeah. You know, they they could very well win like 92 games this year, and I would not be surprised. They could very well win only 74 games, and I would not be surprised. I think 84 and 78 is the perfect balance because I think they're gonna start off slow. Uh, I think Hunter Brown is great, fantastic, top three siling finisher this year. I agree with you, Clay. I I I think he's nails. Um Tatsuya Imai, how good of a pitcher can he be? Um, I don't love their pitching rotation, but I think Hunter Brown is gonna be good enough to get them to where they want to go, especially if Imai steps up. Uh, I think Mike Burrows, the guy that they traded for from Pittsburgh, is a quality addition. I think he's gonna provide a lot of value to that rotation, maybe even bullpen. Um, but like the offense is gonna be the X factor. How good can this offense be? And I think they could be great. Gordon Alvarez is not going to be injured this year. He's not gonna only play 48 games. This is this is a guy that I think will play 130 to 150 games this year, and when he's healthy, he's one of the best hitters in all of baseball. His career uh OPS is 961, and his career war in seven seasons is almost a 25. And that's out of a designated hitter. This guy's ridiculous. I honestly think he has a chance at winning MVP this year. Um, he's that good. People also forget they have Carlos Correa. Like, what if Carlos Correa comes back and has an 830 OPS with gold glove defense and and is hitting home runs in the qual in the Crawford boxes and he's an all-star again. You know what I mean? Like, there are a lot of possibilities with this team. The bullpen I'm still a little bit worried about. Um, but overall, I think this is a very, very good squad. And I do think they have a they'll have a chance at making the wild card. I just don't know if 84 wins is gonna be good enough this year, but we'll see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I'm I take the Rangers in second place as we flip-flop uh things. I don't think the Rangers are that far off of what you said really. I mean, I took them at 86 and 76. I don't think that they make the playoffs, but I I think like you said, I think that offense is gonna be a top three offense and run scored this year. I think their rotation has names, but like you said, there's there's not a floor raiser. It's it's more of a you know high ceiling, but kid, you got two you know ancient artifacts and fossils in that rotation and Evaldi and DeGrom. Can they stay healthy? Is that what you want to call them? Ancient artifacts. Yeah, I mean shit, they're blast from the cross, but are they gonna give you 60 starts this year? Is McKenzie Gore gonna give you 30 starts and make 22 of them good? I don't know. I their bullpen is is very far to uh very far to believe and far to stay away from, but uh I that's my biggest question. I think that they'll do enough to win 86, but I also just don't think 86 is gonna be good enough for uh to win it all. I think their offense is gonna be really good, like you said though. Uh yeah, but I'll lead it into the top of the division, obviously, since you know we've eliminated four teams. We're at the fifth. I have the Mariners winning the AOS going 94 and 58. I I think this team builds off completely.
SPEAKER_0094 and 68.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 94 and 68. I think that they build off of what they did last year. I I think that uh I don't think you're gonna see the same production you saw out of Cal Raleigh, but I think them investing money into uh Josh Naylor. Um I you know, Julio Rodriguez, you know, has to have a good first half. You know, usually he's a merchant, but you know they have the pitching if they're fully healthy, they have the hitting. I still didn't understand the Igenio Suarez move, not bringing him back. I get bringing in Brenda Donovan. But like I said, they have the core pieces to win to go out and win. They have five starters that can give you six, seven innings every night. I just don't see them getting competed with, really. I mean, it's it's gonna be. I think they win the division by eight games, but I also just don't think it's close. I don't think I think it's farther away than eight games, even though it's gonna end up being eight.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fair. I um I I have them at 90 and 72 first in the AL West. Uh, I think they can win more than 90 games. I honestly think 90 is like an understatement, but I think this team went through a lot of um roster reconstruction. Um, they lost obviously Suarez and Polanco and some other pretty important guys to their team. And and I think it's gonna take a little while for them to find their identity again. Nice soda crack, man. Is that your second one of the episode?
SPEAKER_01Second one of the episode, the DP Zero Sugar, baby.
SPEAKER_00Some good stuff right there. But yeah, I just think it may take a little while for them to regain their identity again. But honestly, I'm very I'm very, very happy that they re-sign Josh Naylor over uh Eugenio Suarez. I think Naylor fits in like a glove on that team. Um, Randy Rosarina, great player. Julio, obviously, great player. Cal Raleigh, don't even have to speak too much about him, great player.
SPEAKER_01And then they can teammates, though. Fun like his teammates.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Well, all only in the world baseball classic, like, not in real life. We can't push this uh agenda, but I guess not. Like Brendan Donovan is a quality addition. Uh like a very, very good top-of-the-order bat that will help you manufacture base runners. Uh, JP Crawford, what will he present? Right, like those are six players right there that are mainstays of this offense. The other three have to produce as well. And they lost a lot of depth. However, I think Cole Young is going to have a breakout year for Seattle in 2026. Now, in spring training, he has been killing it. 49 plate appearances, he has 12 hits, three of them being doubles, seven of them being extra base hits, as he has four home runs and 13 RBIs, three stolen bases. He has a 273, 347, 614 uh slash line with a 961 OPS. This kid's gonna be a future star. This is going to be the player that is gonna hold down your shortstop, second base or third or third base for the next eight years or seven years in Seattle. Don't care what position it is, he can do it all. He has crazy power, he's uh very, very strong defender, he's strong on the base paths, good bet to ball skills. I love what Cole Young can provide. And now, obviously, the pitching rotation is lights out for this team as well. It's a rarity to see this much homegrown talent uh or homegrown talent in a pitching rotation. I mean, George Kirby, I don't think he has the year that he has last year again. I think he'll be a top 15, top 10 pitcher in the American League once again. Logan Gilbert, one of the better pitchers in all of baseball. Brian Wu, one of the better pitchers in all of baseball. Um, Luis Castillo. Depends on what type of Castillo you get, but I mean, you still have guys like Emerson Hancock. You have all of these pitching prospects, like Ethan Anderson or or Tate Anderson, excuse me. Well, what if he makes his MOB debut this year? Like it won't happen because he was just drafted in in July. But what if he shoots up the the ranks? And exactly.
SPEAKER_01Like hey, Brian Wu's gonna throw a no-hitter this year. Bull projects.
SPEAKER_00I believe it, man. Brian Wu was absolute nails. This rotation is so good. The bullpen is great with Andres Munoz. The offense is gonna be stellar. I honestly don't think they win 90 games. I think they honestly win more. Uh, but I made my predictions quite a while ago. So that's uh that's the AL West for us, just to recap. I got the Angels coming in at fifth at 71 and 91. I got the Athletics coming in at fourth at 78 and 84, got the Rangers coming in at third in 82 and 80, got the Astros at second with 84 wins and 78 losses, and then I got the Seattle Mariners going back to back at 90 and 72. Clay, if you want to hit your quick recap.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so like Tyler said, I had the Angels at 69 and 93, the A's at 83 and 79, the Astros at 84 and 78, the Rangers at 86 and 76, and the Julio Rodriguez, 30-30 year led Mariners at 94 and 58.
SPEAKER_00There we go. There you have it. AL West, when we come back from this break, we're gonna try and go through these a little quicker. Well, we're gonna give our AL central prediction. So stick right with us. One more shout out to our sponsors, O Squared Residential Design. Just like we build winning sports content, O Squared builds winning kitchens and bathrooms. They're woman-owned, family operated, right here in the state of Maryland. Excellence in every square inch. Check them out at osquaresign.com. That's osquaredesign.com. All right, the AL Central, the greatest division in the world. Who's ready for the case?
SPEAKER_01You would rather be than right here, right now.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. I don't think there's anywhere else that you would rather be right here right now than talking about the American League Central. Come on, make some noise. Make some noise.
SPEAKER_01And the fan goes wild.
SPEAKER_00And the one singular fan in the crowd. Shout out Noah Olson attending all those games. Exactly. Shout out everybody, Noah Olsen, attending all those games. Oh God, that's funny. But um, all right, we're gonna just dive right into it. Starting at number five. Is anyone surprised? The Chicago White Sox. Now, I think they actually had a solid offseason. Um, I like the Munataka Murakami ad. I like bringing in Sir Anthony Dominguez. I like bringing in Austin Hayes. Like these are all additions that I feel like you need to make if you're trying to turn a corner. Um, now they're very marginal. They're extremely marginal. But you think Munutaka Murakami could very well hit 30 home home runs and be like a great player in baseball, but he also very well could be awful and hit like and have like a 208 batting average with a 245 on base and like a 390 slug and be like a sub 700 uh player or OPS player. So I will not be surprised. I've met 65 and 97. Um, they have a few bright spot, bright spots, but a lot of their prospects aren't gonna get caught up this year, especially the top ones. This is kind of like the final year where they're just trying to stay alive. I think next year you're gonna start to see the gears turn a little bit. Maybe they'll spend a little bit more money trying to get a starting pitcher. You'll see Noah Schultz, you'll see um who is that other pitcher on there? Um the Arkansas guy, Smith. What's his name?
SPEAKER_01Um, I want to say Kate Smith, but that's the Indians.
SPEAKER_00No. Um Nate Smith. No. I know it. I know it. I know it. I know it. I know.
SPEAKER_01Shane Shane Smith, Shane Smith.
SPEAKER_00Hagen Smith, that's what it is. Hagen Smith. They have Braden Montgomery as their top prospect, Noah Schultz, Caleb Bonumer, who I think they just drafted, Hagen Smith. Like those four guys would not be surprised if you started to see them this year and next year. But I don't think this is the year that Chicago does it. 65 and 97, fifth in the American League Central for me, still not going to crack 70 wins. Clay?
SPEAKER_01Right there with you. 63 and 99. I think the White Sox show some bright spots. Cool some.
SPEAKER_00They avoid 100 losses. That's good.
SPEAKER_01Hey, the entire AL Central avoids 100 losses. That should be an accomplishment in itself. Um, Kyle Teal, um, you know, they have a lot of young guys. I think, as you mentioned, Austin Hayes is like the face of a team being two years away from being a year away. Um, so uh it's pretty true. I mean, Austin Hayes is gonna have a good first half for them, and then they'll actually get lucky and trade him before his second half struggles and uh you know bring in a couple more prospects. But no, you know, I'm I'm just excited, even though these guys are gonna stink. I'm excited to see the young prospects and see the young guys really get at it, see what Colson Montgomery can do. Kyle Teal, see these guys fully develop. We're gonna talk in Murakami, see what he can do, you know, transitioning over. I think he did himself a favor getting a two-year deal and being able to hit the open market in a couple years. So all of a sudden he has a couple good years, batting third or cleanup for the for the White Sox. They can go get himself something with the Dodgers, you know. Yeah, so I I think there's not much to be said about this team. Obviously, they're gonna have all they just don't have it, you know. Sure, Sir Anthony Dominguez is gonna close out you know three or four games a month for them.
SPEAKER_00But like yeah, exactly. Like have fun doing that, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like have fun. He's gonna get drunk in the in the bullpen. Like I would too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're not gonna be able to do that. I don't expect a whole lot, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'll transition into fourth place. I you know, I think it's a tight battle for fifth place, it's gonna come down to the last week, but I think the twins are gonna edge out to fourth place and go 65 and 97. Twins just don't have it for me. I you know, I think obviously Joe Ryan's there. I think Joe Ryan's dealt at the deadline. They they pretty much traded everybody, let everybody go. I believe they brought in Josh Bell. That's not really uh uh a needle mover at all. Doesn't excite nobody. The pitching's gonna be inconsistent. I think Byron Buxton's gonna get hurt, which is unfortunate. I love watching Byron Buxton play. I'm not counting on her to play 120 games this year, especially when you get to August and they're you know 25 games under 500. I just I don't see it.
SPEAKER_00Fair. You know, the funny thing about Byron Buxton is that he actually had one of his best career years last year and he stayed healthy. He played, I think, like 135 games. So if you can do replicate that, I don't see why the twins couldn't be a good team. And I actually made my American League uh central rankings on February 17th, and a lot of my thoughts have changed since then. I actually originally had the Guardians at fourth and the Twins at three, but now I'm actually gonna switch it. I got the Twins at fourth. That was prior to the Pablo Lopez injury, obviously. Um, and that changes a lot for me. So I got the twins at 74 or yeah, at 74 and 88. Um, Minnesota, like they're going through this weird retooling phase, but they're not tearing it down, but they're not buying either. Um, so I don't really know where they're at. You know, if Royce Lewis and Buxton stay healthy, then great for them. Uh maybe they win 80 games. Um I think Ryan does have the ownership is poor. I think Ryan does have a good chance at being dealt at the deadline. Um, but you know, I think the one guy that's really gonna be the bright spot for them this year is gonna be Mick Abel. Um, he has been absolutely dominant in spring training. Uh 13 and one-thirds innings of work. Uh he's he's given up nine hits, which is a little meh, but um he has a 1.35 ERA with 17 strikeouts. This is ridiculous. He has 11.5k uh K per nine. Uh he's walking less than a batter per nine, giving up a home run less than a batter per nine, six point one hits per nine. Mick Abel is arguably having the greatest spring training out of any starting pitcher that we've seen so far this year. And I think he's gonna be an X factor for for them, especially if you know Ryan performs well, if Simeon Woods Richardson performs well, if Bailey overperforms well or well enough, if Mick Abel can elevate himself to be that number two, maybe the Twins do win some more games, but I don't want to bank on a second-year player doing that. I also don't want to bank on their health because the twins are one of those teams that can never, never stay healthy. So for that reason, I got them at fourth at 74 and 88. And then coming in at third, I got the Cleveland Guardians. I know. Sorry, Guardians fans, I don't want to like count you guys out because I never count you guys out, but this is my preseason rankings. Talk to me in May, and then if you guys start off really, really poor, then I'll buy into you guys because that's when you guys are at that's when they're at their best, when the backs are against the wall.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna have Noah on. I want to say we're shooting for I mean, that series is right before I go to Europe, like like middle of April. So I mean, I I think that it's uh I think that we'll have him on before that series if everything goes as me and Tyler planned. And uh, you know, we'll be about two weeks in. And obviously, you can't really tell anything in 15 games, but you know, it'll be a good sign of so we can we we'll be able to break down what he's seen so far in 15 games compared to where they were at last year. So it's definitely something to look forward to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then we're talking about Noah Olson, uh host of At the Office uh Cleveland. Um really, really good guy, diehard Cleveland sports fan. So we'll have him on for uh on our Orioles page um when uh Baltimore plays Cleveland. But yeah, I got uh the the guards, but at 74 and 78 and 84, excuse me, uh third in the AL Central. Jose Ramirez, man, he deserves better. They've spent no fucking money this offseason, and it is such a shame. It's angering. It's so angering because this is a premier player, arguably a top five player in baseball, and you can't build a proper team around him. You're banking on rookies like Chase Delaugh or Travis Bazana to break out. That is not fair. You're banking on Kyle Manzardo to break out. You traded away Josh Naylor to the Diamondbacks because you didn't want to pay him uh this offseason. Super, super cheap move. Pay your guys, man. Like you you paid Jose. Okay, great. He's not the Jose took a discount or a team. Exactly. So if you guys took a discount, you have the money.
SPEAKER_01You have the money, like like Ryan O'Hearns of the world. The you know, as we mentioned back in the summer, there's so many guys that didn't get paid that much money that they could have paid with the discount they got there. Yep. And to bank off of what you said, Tyler, yeah, I have them coming in third place. I have them at 79 and 83. I, you know, you look at the roster, I mean you took the words out of my mouth. Chase Delater, Travis Bazanna, Kyle Lanzardo, these guys to me are still a year away. I think they're gonna have their struggles this year and their come-ups, but I think they'll be able to fully put it together next year. Um, but you know, I I think they get to 71 79 wins just based off of how strong their pitching is, how strong I think Stephen Vote is. I think Steven Vogue's probably the best manager in the American League, in my opinion. I uh it's hard to debate it. I mean, he's he's gotten more out of his guys than anybody else has. You know, that's why I'm that's why I'm so happy to have Albi in our in our as our skipper. But uh you know, I I I just it's unfortunate, like you said. Jose took took a discount, they didn't really pay anybody. You know, uh obviously, you know, you they're moving away from the Manuel Clase, Luis Ortiz situation. gonna be a year removed after this year and I just you know I I hope for the good of baseball and for how open the America League Central consistently is that they really do invest um after this year and and you know they get guys around Jose and and Bazanna and Manzard or the lottery I they they have to do it otherwise I just I it's gonna continually piss people off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah fair enough and to um roll over here into the uh the second team because we want to get through this hopefully within the next you know 10 10 minutes or so um I got the Kansas City City Royals coming in at second in the AL Central what some of their players did in the world baseball classic was unbelievable. Jack Caglion had an OPS above a thousand Vinny OPS I think in the high 900s Michael Garcia won a tournament MVP Seth Lugo pitched well some of their bullpen arms pitched well like the the royals won the world the world baseball classic and um now they can you know use some of that momentum carry it over into onto opening day I I don't see a a reason that this team couldn't win this division uh but I think they're gonna settle for being a wild card team i i i think they get the final wild card spot at 87 and 55 um their pitching rotation does worry me though a little bit with the aging of Michael Walka and Seth Lugo however they still have guys like a Noah Cameron like a Ryan Burgert who could step up and help if need be but like if Cole Reagan gets injured again that rotation is not going to be very good. Chris Bubic I don't think he's gonna carry you know the weight of a rotation on his shoulders again. He's a great pitcher but I don't see that happening um you need Cole Reagans to put together like a Psyon caliber season or not even a Csion caliber season just stay healthy man like have a 3-4 ERA but make 32 starts and throw 190 innings like if you do that the Royals will be a playoff team because their offense will be good enough. I love the addition of Isaac Collins and Nick Mears from the Brewers they brought in Lane Thomas I think their bullpen is going to be great they traded for Matt Strom brought brought in Carlos Steves I like Lucas Ursik I like some of those other arms there not to mention you have two of the best catching prospects in the game in Blake Mitchell and Carter Jansen why can't this team win the central it's because I am really worried about that pitching rotation. I think their bullpen is going to be great their offense will be fantastic in my opinion it all depends on what guys like Carter Jansen Jack Caglion and Blake Mitchell do though. You know Bobby Witt he'll be an MVP caliber guy but Salvador Perez the regression is going to hit Vinny Pasquantino he's got to you know break out a little bit more in the regular season but Michael Garcia and Bobby Witt those two guys are good enough to you know manufacture base runners you're gonna need Vinny Pasquantino Jack Caglione Blake Mitchell Salvador Perez Carter Jansen Delane Thomas uh Isaac Collins those types of guys are gonna have to drive in runs and if you do that this team is going to be smooth sailing but for that reason 85 and 77 third wild card spot in the American league for me so I'm gonna take the floor from you I feel like you kind of have been reading off my sheet a little bit um I also have the Royals taking that last wildcard spot play we just no goal play that's what I'm saying dog it's just that little you know we speak to each other through tongues.
SPEAKER_01No I have them going 87 and 75. You know the Royals they've they've pissed me off my entire life there they've been pests my entire life but you know they they play the game the right way I mean like you said the rotation's got to stay healthy. Colt Reagan's just I mean that guy's incredible you just got to hope for the best with him because when he's on he's on we saw it in the wild card a couple years ago um you know Seth Lugo's aging but he's still Seth Lugo Michael Walker's still Michael Walka I think you know obviously they got Alex Lanez they got Matt Strom you know they still have John Schreiber I I think the one that sticks out to me though and he's not going to be that impactful but just having him is Bailey Falter I think the I think the ability to be able to be either long relief you know you know have a spot start here or there he gives them that flexibility that all of a sudden if if one of their starters gets lit up like a firecracker or someone goes on the D L all of a sudden you know he can step in for 15 days. He's turned into you know a solid big leaguer he's it's been more than a cup of coffee than when he was with the Phillies and with the Pirates you know I think that's going to be an underrated signing for them. I think like you said they have the heading Pascantino Michael Garcia winning World Baseball Classic MVP congrats to him you know and to mention Jack Paglion I'm I'm hitting about 800 with his card in uh Diamond Dynasty right now. So oh yeah yeah he's a he's a big favorite of mine that swing is just incredible but you know also they brought in a vet and Starling Marte. I think you know Starling Marte is way past his prime and I don't think he's gonna be that impactful but just having him in that clubhouse having guys like Wayne Thomas they're gonna be really good for these young guys. Drew Waters was once a top prospect for the Braves can you get anything out of him I don't know but you know the potential's there's a reason he was you know a first round draft pick. So yeah Bobby Wade I mean what else do I need to say I think he's gonna come in second for MVP behind gunner.
SPEAKER_00So look at that hot take.
SPEAKER_01Look at that I like that play trade. I like that so yeah no I I I see them winning 87 games I think they're a really good team I think uh Matt Quitaro's got them going in the right direction over the last few years and I I can see them adding at the deadline as well like you said they got some good prospects and you know if Chris Bubic can do what he did last year or even come close to that that's a great two for them.
SPEAKER_00I'll tell you that all of a sudden you have a solid four that can get you through a seven game series if they stay healthy and then Michael Waka and then uh Seth Lugo the leagues don't fall off of them yeah at at some point the wheels are going to fall off those two guys but I I think the Royals arguably had one of the better MLB off seasons that no one really wants to wants to uh talk about here um but nobody wants to play them I'll tell you that exactly those those guys are speed demons on the base pass they have insane defense all around the diamond with good pitching and good hitting very well rounded team coming in at number one um I had them winning 87 games but I'm gonna bump that up to 8990. I got the Detroit Tigers at we'll go uh 90 and 72 actually no we'll say 89 and 73 um if this rotation wasn't already elite with Terek Scuble Casey Myze Jack Flaherty um I don't know how you can get any more elite after you add for Ember Valdez. Like you just went from elite to deadly and um that is arguably the best one two punch in baseball uh you could argue some other people Christopher Sanchez Zach Wheeler um Yoshinobu Yamamoto and whoever you want to take on the um Dodgers but I don't know man Scoobal and Framber is deadly two of the best Southpaws in the game those guys alone can win you 30 games right so you you you win 30 games there you assume you're probably gonna beat the white sox what like 13 out of 16 times so right there you just won 43 free games how how much better can this tigers offense be to win them like 100 like I think they have the ability to win like 95 games 100 games even because their rotation and bullpen is so damn good but like their offense has got to take a leap at some point they didn't really add a whole lot to it I'm pretty sure they added one bet if I'm not mistaken Clay um they re-signed Glaber I know that yeah Javi Bayas bounced back okay I don't think they really made I don't think they did I'm looking at it I mean Parker Meadows I mean Orioles legend Jamai Jones you know nothing really Matt Veerling I mean these guys have been here for a few years now there's the offense the offense stinks gotta be honest with you I agree but I do think the one thing that you can look at as a bright side for this well I guess they did they didn't always have Jace Young right no they always had him they always brother Josh yeah I'm thinking Josh the one thing that the Tigers have that can bolster their offense is Kevin McGonical I think that guy could win rookie of the year this year. Now it's gonna be hard to to to beat out you know some of these other really really good AL guys guys right there that I that I will put ahead of him but yeah I mean but McGonagle no he's a piously of course he has been absolutely killing it in spring training um I think Chase DeWater's gonna be in that conversation yeah sure guardians guy I mean the AL Central has some great prospects but I think this offense can go as far as you know Riley Green Spencer Torkelson Javi Baez Carrie Carpenter take them and then if you get improvements from guys like Colt Keith if Kevin McGonagall if Kevin McGonagall can burst onto the scene their pitching rotation is going to be great they're they're gonna be top five in in in team ERA it's a matter of whether or not their offense can win them enough games so I have them winning 89 games they're gonna be 89 and 73 just because I once again cannot buy in to this offense play yeah I have them going 90 and 72.
SPEAKER_01I you know it's to me this team I think the best thing for Framber was going to Detroit. It's like it's like I've told you about Zion Williamson the best thing for him would be going to some city like Utah with shitty food. Leaving that food scene in Houston and in Texas I mean that's probably going to be the best thing for him I got to be honest with you. I mean so much slot there's so much barbecue and fucking there's all they got in Detroit's hot dogs and and God knows what they don't got shit. They got them conies but you know they got good pizza little Caesars but you know um no I you know they have the pitching like you said you know I'm not a Kenley Jansen believer but I they have guys that string it together in the back end you know Will Vest guys like that. My question is and and you know I'm gonna go two ways with their offense I think Spencer Torquelson's gonna hit 35 homers this year and finally break out to I think he's gonna be that guy that they took at 1-1 for a reason. My other question is is Javi Baez going to be the the guy we saw last year or was last year his Swan song in a sense I mean I yeah I don't think anybody saw that coming last year. It was great to see it was cool to see him it was cool to see some guy you know blacks from the past turn into an all-star again but is that reciprocal is that gonna happen again I just don't is that the norm is it the norm is that yeah is that the new Javi Baez I don't know but like you said they got a lot of young guys you know I think max clark's gotten a lot of shit this spring and I I think Max Clark's gonna be I think Max Clark's gonna be a hell of a baseball player. I you know I I think max clark is a top prospect for a reason I don't know if it's gonna be this year it'll probably more likely be next year but I just felt the need to say that Max Clark is is fucking legit. You know I I I think he's good for the game you know he interacts with fans constantly on X and and on our social on all socials. You know that's the kind of guys that you want to grow the game everybody wants to bash and bash and bash instead of you know appreciating these guys that are you know literally tweeting out if you have any questions send them to me I'll answer them and he sits there and answers them my chair you know you we need to grow the game you know I I get we're talking about the AL Central but at the end of the day the game is the most important thing here. Yeah no doubt bat bashing guys that that are you know raising the game up is just not something that I think is right and I I I hope to see Max Clark be successful in his future. But you know moving on from that I 1972 I I think the central's very open it's going to come down to them and the Royals but you know if they're hitting can put it together I just think they have a little more pitching. Yeah sure give us your uh recap of the standings Leigh and then I'll give mine then we'll wrap it up gotcha so I have the White Sox 63 and 99 the twins at 65 and 97 the Indians at 79 and 83 the royals at 87 and 75 and the Tigers at 90 and 72.
SPEAKER_00Good deal I got the White Sox at five at 65 and 97 I got the twins at fourth at 74 and 88 got the Guardians at third and 78 and 84 the Royals in second at 85 and 77 and then the Tigers in first at 89 and 73.
