Hey friends, welcome back to another episode of Teaching Mastery Academy. I'm your host, francesca, and today we're diving into one of my absolute favorite topics how to create a transformative learning experience using the Hero's Journey Framework. It is such a cool framework and I am sharing with you today. You see, every great story has a hero. You see, every great story has a hero, and guess what? That hero, my friend, is not you. You are a hero in my eyes, but today, this podcast episode is about a different hero it's your students. Now, this isn't about being the expert on the stage. This episode, it's about being the guide who helps your students conquer their challenges and come out victorious. So by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to use the Hero's Journey framework to create courses that empower your students to achieve their own epic transformations. How good is that? Let's do this. So I thought we'd start with the basics Now.
Speaker 1:The hero's journey is a storytelling structure identified by Joseph Campbell, and it shows up in almost every epic tale, from Star Wars to the Lord of the Rings to your favorite Disney movies. It's a 12 stage journey where an ordinary person transforms into a hero by facing challenges, gaining new skills and ultimately achieving something extraordinary. Now here's the key. This isn't just for movies. It's a powerful tool for course creators to map out their students learning journey as well. When you structure your course around this framework, your students don't just consume content, they experience a transformation. In other words, they become the hero of their own story. So let's break it down step by step. We've got 12 steps to get through. So here's how each stage of the hero's journey aligns with your student's learning process. And as I go through this, think about how you can integrate these stages into your own course. So step one, or stage one, is the ordinary world, and this is where your students are before they find your course. They're facing challenges, they're feeling stuck or they're searching for solutions. Now, your role here is to show them that you understand these struggles and that transformation is possible. So, for example, a student might be struggling to grow their business but feels overwhelmed by all the strategies out there. Now your course becomes the beacon of clarity for them. So that's stage one, the ordinary world.
Speaker 1:Stage two we move into the call to adventure, and this is when your students realize they need help. It's your job to make the invitation irresistible so you can show them the opportunity for change and the value of saying yes to your course. And here's my tip for you Use compelling messaging in your webinar or sales page that speaks directly to your students pain points and their desires. Make your students feel like this is their moment to step up Really. Look at that motivational language on your sales page Now.
Speaker 1:Stage three is called refusal of the call, because not every student will jump in right away. They might feel fear or doubt, and so by addressing these objections with empathy and encouragement, you're much more likely to create and build that trust with your students. So, for example, you could create an FAQ section or a pre-course webinar that reassures your students and helps them see why now is the right time to act Really. Educate them really. Build that scaffolding around your offer so that your students feel that trust beginning to grow. Now stage four is called meeting the mentor, and here's where you step in as the guide. You're the mentor who's been where they are and knows how to help your students succeed. I suggest you share your story authentically. Show them how you can overcome similar challenges and what's possible when they follow your framework. Really show your students that you've been there, you've done that you've experienced the same pain points, and this is the solution. This is how you overcame them.
Speaker 1:Stage five is called crossing the threshold, and this is the moment that this is how you overcame them. Stage five is called crossing the threshold, and this is the moment that your students enroll in your course. Yay, celebrations, popping of the champagne. They're stepping into a new world. They're ready to leave their old habits behind and they're ready to embrace transformation, and you really want to celebrate this milestone with them. You could send them a welcome email with a personal video to congratulate them for taking the first step. Or think about something that aligns with your niche, that really does celebrate the fact that they have taken this momentous step forward, because it is a big step forward for them. They're passing with their money, they're putting their faith and their trust in you, and so, by crossing the threshold, it is a moment of celebration between both parties.
Speaker 1:Stage six is called test allies and enemies. Now, this is where the real journey begins. Your students will face challenges, but they'll also discover resources and support along the way as well, and this is where your course content starts to truly shine, if you've structured it the right way, if you've been through Teaching Mastery Academy and you know exactly how to engage your students and structure your lessons, then this is where your course really will shine out, and my tip for you is that you may think about introducing peer-to-peer interactions like group discussions or accountability buddies, so that your students feel really supported and a community on Facebook is a great example of this, too and think about creating content that tackles common obstacles that your students might have, you know, right at the start. Really start to introduce content in your lessons where you know that your students might have some, some difficulties or some struggles getting started with your course. Stage seven is called approach to the inmost cave. Now, this is the point where students confront their biggest fears or their limiting beliefs, and they might feel like giving up here. So you might want to think about something like mindset coaching or motivational modules that help your students push through these barriers, remind them of their why. So think about how you've structured your course and you've allowed time and space in your modules and your lessons for some little hiccups where you can build in that motivational content.
Speaker 1:Stage eight is called the ordeal, and this is the turning point. This is where your students take on the biggest challenge, whether it's completing a major assignment or implementing your framework or facing a personal fear. So really make sure that you are prepared for this and you've got something in place Like, for example, you could design a capstone project or a milestone in your course that forces your students to apply everything they've learned so far, also feedback to guide them through it. So think again about how you've structured your course and we teach all of this in Teaching Mastery Academy anyway. But if you haven't been through Teaching Mastery Academy, then make sure that you are thinking about the structure and the flow of your lessons and modules to make sure that you have got some of those key milestones sorted Now.
Speaker 1:Stage nine is called the reward. Now, this is another point of celebration, because your students have done it. Your students have achieved a significant win. This is where you celebrate their progress and you help your students see how far they've come, and you could do that through something like highlighting their success in your community or creating certificates of completion to mark their achievement, or maybe a free download or a bonus lesson or something to really make them feel special. You want that reward. You want them to know that it's a reward, or maybe a free download or a bonus lesson or something to really make them feel special. You want that reward. You want them to know that it's a reward. It's time to celebrate and pat them on the back.
Speaker 1:Stage 10 is the road back. Now the journey isn't over. Don't think that because we've celebrated their success in your course, that it's the end of the road. Your students need to integrate what they've learned into their daily lives, and so we need to help them solidify their transformation. So what you could do is something like maybe provide post-course resources or access to an alumni group where your students can continue to grow and continue to connect, and that also leaves the door open for them to be able to work with you again down the track, which is great. That's that lifetime. What is it? The lifetime customer value LCV really begins to increase at this point.
Speaker 1:Stage 11 is called the resurrection, and this is where your students fully embody their transformation. They've changed not just their skills, but also their mindset and their identity. This is really exciting. This is where those testimonials and those reviews start to come in, and how you can implement this in your course is you could share stories of past students who have gone on to achieve incredible results, because this will inspire your current students to see what's possible and also your future students to sign up. So it's stage 11, the resurrection. This is where we really want to tap into those testimonials. And then stage 12 is the return with the elixir. So, finally, your students take their new knowledge and they share it with others. They're empowered, confident and ready to make a difference in their world. And this is really exciting because you can encourage referrals by creating a program where students can share your course with their network, and then you can recognize them as ambassadors of your method or affiliates and really start to grow that extra pillar of marketing for your brand. So stage 12 is a super important stage.
Speaker 1:Okay, that's the hero's journey in a nutshell. I kind of flew through that because there were 12 stages and I wanted you to stay with me. So now that we've walked through the hero's journey, let's talk about why it's so effective, and I've got three reasons why. For you, it creates emotional connection. When your students see themselves as the hero, they're more invested in the process. They're not just consuming content, they're living a story. They become your best ambassadors, they become your super fans. And that's the whole point when you look at a sales funnel is you want your students to come out the other end as super fans that will go off and they will refer your course to other people, to their friends, to their family, to the community. And when it comes to premium courses, we want every student that goes through the funnel to become a super fan because the level of service that we are offering them, the quality of content that we're creating, the quality of education that we're teaching our students is premium. So we know that when you have created a premium course, you are so much more likely to get those super fans, creating that emotional connection. And the hero's journey is the perfect framework to encompass this and also this framework.
Speaker 1:This hero's Journey framework also builds momentum because each stage naturally leads to the next, keeping your students engaged and motivated, and it kind of mirrors what we teach inside Teaching Mastery Academy, where we look all about scaffolding that learning and starting with the basics, starting with easy lessons and then building up the intensity, building up the hard and all the difficulty and making sure that we have got really good signposted modules and points along the way where your students can step back and reflect and celebrate their wins and also reinforce what they're learning. That's another key pillar of premium course design, and we teach this inside Teaching Mastery Academy. But remember that by using something like the Hero's Journey, you can see how it builds momentum. You can see how your students know that the path that they're on is going to lead to a conclusion that's going to be celebrated and they're going to come out the other end with a really successful conclusion.
Speaker 1:Now, the third reason why this hero's journey framework works is because it delivers transformation, and transformation, I really believe, should be embossed on a plaque and stuck in your office right in front of you where you can see it. At all times when you are creating your course, when you are creating your social media content, your emails, your youtube content and so on, you have to think about the transformation that comes first and foremost, and then everything from there flows. So the hero's journey is not just about learning. It's about becoming, and students leave your course feeling changed. They've been on a journey, they've had that transformation, and your course should reflect that. They should feel like they've been on a journey, they've had that transformation and your course should reflect that. They should feel like they have been on a journey with you throughout your course, you've celebrated the wins with them, you've supported them through the losses, the times of confusion, the times of lack of motivation, and they have come out the other end a transformed person, in some sense of the word word, whether it's knowledge or application, or psychology. You need to ensure that that transformation is delivered and with premium courses, you don't have to worry so much, because that's the whole point of being premium. Is that we focus so heavily on that word, transformation, and how do we really apply it to our courses? How do we really ensure that every single student that signs up gets that transformation through our teaching methods and through our ability to impart our knowledge to our students, so important? So let's bring this home, let's tie all this up with a great big red bow.
Speaker 1:The hero's journey framework isn't just a storytelling tool. It's a roadmap for creating courses that truly empower your students. When you position your student as the hero and yourself as the guide, you're not just teaching anymore. You're inspiring transformation. So I have a little challenge for you today, if you so choose to take it up. Look at your course that you've got currently, or one that you've got planning, or that's in your mind. How can you map the hero's journey onto your students experience? What stages are you already nailing and where can you improve Now? If this episode sparked some ideas, I'd love to hear about it.
