Speaker 2:How are you, hi? I'm great. Thank you for having me again.
Speaker 1:You must have liked my view.
Speaker 2:I'm just kidding, not that great. It's stunning yeah.
Speaker 1:Thank you, welcome back. What have you been up to since we last spoke?
Speaker 2:I've been working.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Working, working, doing a lot of-.
Speaker 1:Now, where do you work at? Can you say?
Speaker 2:Yeah. I guess, so I work for SISD, I work at a high school, eastlake High School, I guess I could say Eastlake.
Speaker 1:High School yeah, Nice Well yeah, you know what?
Speaker 2:They did an interview recently, so it's out there. All right cool, cool, cool. Eastlake High School at Horizon, yeah, in Horizon, yeah nice.
Speaker 1:Wow, how busy is that traffic.
Speaker 2:Not bad. I think, it takes me 10, 15 minutes.
Speaker 1:You're riding around that area.
Speaker 2:No, no, I live lower.
Speaker 1:Lower Valley.
Speaker 2:No, you know what. It's not considered. Lower Valley, right, or is it? Yeah, lower Valley then?
Speaker 1:Is it Lower Valley? Okay, sorry, we're asking her husband on the shot here.
Speaker 2:No, yeah, but it's not bad, it's not bad. Thank you for bringing your book too, by the way. Oh yeah, other way oh, yeah, of course.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what's the name of it again? Autism a new friend a new friend, that's our new friend that's autism I love, I love that. Uh, we're bringing awareness to el paso. Of course, that's got to be a nationwide thing or worldwide thing.
Speaker 2:Now, right yeah, I agree, I'm on a mission you're on a mission I'm on a mission to do now again.
Speaker 1:How long have you been on this mission? Eight months eight months eight months on top of your job on top of my job.
Speaker 2:Yeah, this is the job in itself. Yeah, I believe it yeah, like this podcast.
Speaker 1:Everybody's like whoa, he must make a million dollars on that podcast, not yet folks not folks, not yet, not yet. So no, I'm really enjoying the podcast here, and you said you're a big fan.
Speaker 2:Oh, I love it. I absolutely love it. I'm telling you that, on my way to work, this is what I listen to.
Speaker 1:I'm surprised that you don't fall asleep Because people say my voice is so soothing. But no, go ahead it is soothing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean I saying my voice is so soothing, but no, go ahead, it is. Yeah. I mean I, I think that's what I knew.
Speaker 1:It keeps me coming back that's so funny, and I'll tell you what. Both of my wives fell in love with my voice over the phone and I'm just being honest 100 yeah, yeah. So, uh, my second wife. She was like your voice don't match your looks for real. She said that, but no, but at least the voice was soothing. But so, anyways, tell me what you like about the podcast I love it.
Speaker 2:I love the people that you have that I feel they're so inspiring. Um, like I said, I think I said previously that on my drive to work, your conversations, how you guys speak about god, um the bible verses I'm driving to work and I'm just like amen, I needed this.
Speaker 1:You're amening my podcast. I amen your podcast. That's cool, I love it, yeah, and the other thing I was gonna say is that, um when, because everybody I have on the show, including yourself, you inspire me, everybody I have on the show inspires me. So I think that's why I love doing this so much, because, yeah, they're very inspirational?
Speaker 2:Again, I don't. I personally don't know any people right, like the any of the guests that you've had, but I heard Megan Harris and she sounds like a boss.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she's Megan's amazing. Yeah, and then Joe Loya and his journey and what he's been through, and this is just from what I've heard, the checkered past, as we said, yeah, the checkered past and that's so inspirational.
Speaker 2:And the barber.
Speaker 1:MRK.
Speaker 2:MRK the barber and his conversation about value and how seeing your worth, I took a lot from that and, of course, deanna yeah.
Speaker 1:Deanna, I do know Deanna. I do know Deanna, I do know You're doing Deanna.
Speaker 2:Yeah, she's the one that invited you to come on my show. Yeah, so I texted her.
Speaker 1:I was in LA when she told me that we were having dinner. We were going to go to Disneyland the next day and we were having an Italian dinner and she said there's a girl, a young lady, that wants to go on your show. And I don't think she even knew that we went to church together or we went to the same church, but she just said, yeah, she wants to. I think she'd be good for your show, so you should reach out to her. I said, well, give me her information. I'd love to have her on, but that's how that came about. And so we were talking about that over dinner. And yeah, deanna's one of my karaoke buddies.
Speaker 1:Yeah so yeah, I mean, like I say, I cheated karaoke because I sing at church and they make it sound good and I got a lot of great coaches over there that help me out with my voice stuff.
Speaker 2:You should help me out with my voice stuff. Yeah, I want.
Speaker 1:I don't think I'm the teacher though, no, but yeah, maybe I can and there's no hope. Yeah, no, no, no. I mean, if I can do it, you can do it, trust me. But yeah, I got a lot of people that teach me how to do stuff with my voice, Ezra being one of them, and then my leaders, david and Lydia, on the west side, but yeah. And then there's Felipe. He's always helping out, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:I know Felipe and then Edgar. Yeah, there's a lot of people in that group that just help me sing, and so when I do karaoke, everybody's like, man, you're incredible. I'm like, well, I'm just cheating, I need to go hear you. Oh, you want to hear me? Okay, yeah, let's go, I'll let you know, but yeah, so you're saying you're inspired, all my guests, but they inspire me, deanna.
Speaker 2:I met Deanna at an author's event and, um, you know, like they put out little flyers and they say who's going, and I saw I was like hey, that's the girl that wrote the el paso book yeah and I got like so excited I was like I can't wait, I'm gonna meet her, she's gonna. I'm gonna purchase a book, she's gonna sign it.
Speaker 1:I was so excited yeah and so when I met her, so you're a big fan of her.
Speaker 2:I'm a big fan. I love, I have, I love her books so much, so, so much yeah I bought two copies are already really I purchased two copies and I'm bugging her for a third. I my love language is gift giving so I'm like you get a book, you get a book okay, oprah so I met her and I purchased a book.
Speaker 2:And then after the event she came over to my table and we were talking to her and I was like, girl, your book made me crave Chico's. And then she was like I love it. And then she was like let's go. I was like let's go.
Speaker 1:So you went. We went no way. Yeah, went, we went no way. Yeah, right after, what's your go-to? Chico's? I'm, by the way, we're talking about chico's tacos. Those of you that don't live in el paso, sorry about that. Chico's tacos, and there's a few locations here in el paso, but go ahead, sorry, no no, your go-to, my go-to, I it's a single and fries and half a hot dog just a single, yeah, half a hot dog half a hot dog yeah, I'll go for the double cheese and double order.
Speaker 2:Well, extra cheese, of course, Of course, yeah, of course.
Speaker 1:But I'll go for the double order because you know.
Speaker 2:You don't get two singles, mm-mm. No, I'll go for the double yeah and then pour that green chili on top. No, pero como que no se agualan. No, está bien Está. I would think like okay, you'll get two singles.
Speaker 1:I can hear people right now Uh-oh Google Translate, oh my God, Go ahead.
Speaker 2:I would assume people get two singles that way. They won't, you know, get so soggy yeah no, I'm good either way.
Speaker 1:Okay, and do you toss your fries in afterwards?
Speaker 2:You know what I do. Okay, okay, so this is what everybody has their own chicos, I toss my fries in. Do you In the juice?
Speaker 1:In the juice after I'm done with the tacos.
Speaker 2:I feel everybody has their own method of eating chicos. So what I do is I.
Speaker 1:It's so funny, it's true, it is.
Speaker 2:I get my little green cup of chile. Okay, I pour half of it onto my tacos and then the other half. I put ketchup in the little cup.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:And then I mix it and I dip my fries at that. Ooh, try it.
Speaker 1:I am going to try that salt and pepper mix. Oh my.
Speaker 2:God, that's what I do.
Speaker 1:See, I'm inspired now. No, that's good. Wow, I like it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, try it Okay, so you guys are sitting down having.
Speaker 1:Chico's. Oh, I like it. Yeah, try it. Okay, so you guys are sitting down having chico's.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah. So we're sitting down, we're having chico's and we're just talking and she's so cool she is I love her. I love her so much and that was just like the first time I met her.
Speaker 1:You should hear her sing.
Speaker 2:I've never.
Speaker 1:You should, you guys invite me. Okay, we'll do an invite. Yeah, I'm very anti-social, no, no, no, I'm very reserved, I'm a homebody. That's so weird because you're an author.
Speaker 2:I know I'm learning.
Speaker 1:I'm learning to get out there because you got to be the marketer too.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah so, like I, like I said last podcast, I think that I had to take a class on public speaking to get to teach me how to just so you really did take a class.
Speaker 1:I really did. I had to. What did you learn in there? Because I, I want to learn. I'm just kidding, I am like you're great.
Speaker 2:No, I learned um to breathe, to breathe um and I share this I. I share this on my social media because I like to get what I've learned and share it so I learned that I have to breathe, take deep breaths. I also have to visualize success. So if I visualize myself talking and you know standing ovation, because look, look.
Speaker 1:I've seen the pictures of you at um at a reading event, right, and you got the book open. I've seen you reading, yeah, and everybody's looking at you and you look comfortable I'm sweating okay, I don't like that. So yeah, because you look comfortable in the picture. Is that one of the 10 pictures that your husband's taking just yeah, pretty much no, but I'm sweating in there, I am.
Speaker 2:I'm so nervous and I'm like Are you guys hot? And they're like no, we're fine.
Speaker 1:You know, I still get nervous.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Doing these podcasts, absolutely.
Speaker 2:Okay, so that's just normal, because I don't edit. Okay, yeah, that's yeah.
Speaker 1:So that's the thing it's like.
Speaker 2:I gotta Keep it flowing first of all, but I hope.
Speaker 1:I'm doing a good job yeah.
Speaker 2:You're doing amazing.
Speaker 1:And you've heard the other shows, but, yeah, I still get nervous about this. What is it? The imposter syndrome, imposter syndrome yeah, I get it all the time.
Speaker 2:I get it all the time. Yeah, all the time, but with the help of that class. You know you're breathing, visualizing success and what else it's. Oh, this helped me so, so much. Okay, it's just being grateful. Wow, being having that mindset of being grateful and having these opportunities just really shifts that energy to nervous, from nervous to being excited, and I that's my go-to now like just concentrating on did you know that they also said living your life with a grateful heart like that actually builds a better immune system. Really yeah.
Speaker 1:So do that too for that reason.
Speaker 2:Okay, that's the first time I've heard that.
Speaker 1:Because you ever run across somebody who's always bitter.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 1:They're always sick. Yeah, yes, I have they're always sick, yeah, and I don't wish that on anybody Of course not. But you do see that. You see somebody always complain about something. It's like, wow, I can't believe the traffic here You're in a car.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:You're not walking, this is all perspective. Yeah, and I always share that with people. It's like you know, I talk to people on the phone all day and that's my job, and by the time they're done with me, they're like wow, I feel inspired to go on with my day, but that's what I want to do, if that's what I'm waking up to do. God's given me a purpose to do something every day because I've woken up first of all. So because I've woken up first of all, so I'm happy about that.
Speaker 1:I'm thankful for that, and so I said, okay, my purpose is to go and impact somebody else's life today, and that's what I'm going to do, because you never know what everybody's going through.
Speaker 2:Yeah, very true. That's why the grateful heart is good, and it's your voice too.
Speaker 1:My voice is soothing, yeah, that helps that gets people going. That's another gift too, though it is it really is yeah, I can just speak to somebody with compassion and they'll be like you know. I really felt that through the phone call. And that's all I have, because they can't see my facial expressions. They can't see my hand gestures like we do here as Hispanics. We do that, yes, even on a podcast that doesn't have any visual, we still do it.
Speaker 1:But yeah they can't see any of that, and the same thing is coming across when you're speaking here on the show. They hear the compassion, your drive for what you want to do as far as spreading the word of awareness for autism. It's the same thing. They're going to see that in the show or feel that in the show, and that's the same thing. It's just a gift. It's a gift that you have as well, and that's why you're passionate about it.
Speaker 2:I'm very passionate about it.
Speaker 1:So you and Deanna, what were you guys talking about?
Speaker 2:Oh, so just kind of like picking each other's brains, I guess.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but I did tell her that I was. When I first met her, I was like girl, I'm so jealous, like I love your book I was so jealous. No, but not in a bad job it's like a good jealous like I want to.
Speaker 2:I want to be like you, that sort of thing yeah, like it's because it that was such an amazing idea. Yeah, and I get, being from el pasoo, being from El Paso and seeing that book, and I was just like, wow, if you guys don't have this book, you guys need to get it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, let's plug it yeah.
Speaker 2:You guys need to get Diana Gutierrez's book. It's El Paso the Señorita.
Speaker 1:Señorita, yeah.
Speaker 2:And the El Paso Placita a tour.
Speaker 1:I'm sorry, I'm trying to get the title right. I'm sorry, Deanna, no she still loves you, don't?
Speaker 2:worry, but yeah, you know, let me try and get the title right.
Speaker 1:Or go listen to the episode You'll hear it on the plug.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 1:Deanna Salcedo's episode with me. I'm sorry for that title.
Speaker 2:But it's just the book. Overall it's just amazing.
Speaker 1:I loved it so much and just like it says in the Bible, where they talked about Jesus coming out of Nazareth and they say what good thing can come out of Nazareth? Same thing Everybody thinks about El Paso Like well, what good thing can come out of El Paso? Well, I've already spoken to a lot of people in El Paso on my podcast. There's a lot of good things that come out of El Paso.
Speaker 2:I love this city, I do too.
Speaker 1:I will always live, I'm dying in this city, so I mean I'm fine with it. So everything's great, I mean everybody's like. Well, you guys are so behind the times, I'm not worried about that.
Speaker 2:Are we though?
Speaker 1:Are we no, no, no. I mean, I've visited other cities too, yeah, and they got it going on, sure, but you know, I'm not talking about budgets or anything like that. I'm not a city manager, I'm not anything like that. But I'm saying can we do a lot more? Yeah, sure, we could, but there's a lot, a lot of good here, a lot of good. A lot of good. Yeah, and I got to say you are too speaking just because you're on my show. I'm saying this is inspiring, thank you.
Speaker 2:I mean because, why not, why not you?
Speaker 1:You know, yeah, million-dollar copy. You know why not From my mouth to God's ears right.
Speaker 2:Amen, but let's go, yeah, but.
Speaker 1:I'm saying yeah, Deanna's a great friend. We just got back from Disneyland, How'd that go. Oh my God, Incredible. And I'm going to share this because we went with adults. Just one of my karaoke, our karaoke DJs, nathan and his fiancee Erica. They're getting married this year. But we went and I had some time I had to kill for vacation days and I said yeah, I'd love to go.
Speaker 1:So I just booked my stuff, we met up at the park and we rented the. They don't call them handicap scooters, they're called what do they call them? Convenience vehicles. Oh, okay, I like that yeah because you can't say handicap in California.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:So we rented those. They were $84. You get $20 at the end of the night. It gets put in your account back you know, maybe a couple business days. So $84 plus the Lightning Pass. All right, you're in it for $110, plus whatever the ticket is to Disneyland. So now you're in it for $2,000. I plus whatever the ticket is to Disneyland.
Speaker 2:So now you're in it for two grand. I'm just playing, I'm just playing.
Speaker 1:But so the ticket to Disneyland and those two items and you drive in with these carts and they have space where you can drive in. They see you coming in with them and we look like a motorcycle gang, all four of us, and we just drove up. I followed them, we stayed single file. You're going into an area where they park the cars. You park the car, take your key out and then what they do is they turn it around while you're on the ride and then you just exit out.
Speaker 1:They turn the car around for you oh yeah, totally like a valet anyway, so we're on the ride in two minutes. So you're, and then you place the lightning pass for the next ride after you finish that one. So you're not even waiting. Wow this is better than just the lightning pass.
Speaker 1:So if I can spread that gospel out there. I'm going to share that one because that is the way to go. And then, at the end of the night, you're not tired, you're not tired and you're watching the fireworks in your chair Total win, I'm telling you. It's a total win. And the other thing is two people were coming up to us or looking at us, giving us dirty looks and stuff, because you know, for the most part I was the oldest guy there in the group. But they looked at me and they're like well, he looks kind of fit. You know, yeah, yeah, he doesn't look like he's handicapped, so to speak. And once again, I don't mean to say that, but you don't have to be. And some guy came up to me. He goes what do you have to do to get one of these? Is it a debit or credit card? That's it.
Speaker 2:I like that A little money.
Speaker 1:That's it, a little money A. A little bit, a little bit of money and that's it. And then you get to ride throughout the whole park and people get out of your way like Pardon, the Red Sea, it's really fun.
Speaker 2:Pardon, the Red Sea.
Speaker 1:Because I guess they feel sorry for you or whatever. But then you get the looks, so whatever.
Speaker 2:You'll get looks, no matter what, no matter what You're right, you're right Wow.
Speaker 1:That's so true, but we had a blast. It was the best time at Disneyland I've ever had in my life, and California Adventure.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's awesome. I went to Disneyland once.
Speaker 1:In your life.
Speaker 2:In my life.
Speaker 1:Come on. What happened?
Speaker 2:What happened to your childhood?
Speaker 1:I'm so sorry, one time, one time. I must have gone every year when.
Speaker 2:I was a kid Really. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I must have gone every year when I was a kid.
Speaker 1:Really, yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean I went to like what is it Viesta Texas?
Speaker 1:Okay, san Antonio, yeah.
Speaker 2:I went there often.
Speaker 1:Okay, but Disneyland, okay. I guess it's a different thing. Yeah, you're right, yeah.
Speaker 2:I mean, I don't know why.
Speaker 1:Wow.
Speaker 2:Just once. My husband's the one that Took me and my son.
Speaker 1:Really. And how old Is your son at the time? I know he's 19 now.
Speaker 2:He's 19 now. How old Was he? He was like 16.
Speaker 1:That's a good age.
Speaker 2:I think he was younger, I think like 13. Yeah, maybe it was, it wasn't that one time one time 14 he said wow, yeah, one time, one time I.
Speaker 1:You looked at me like what, what did I say something wrong? I was like I just looked at you kind of like what are you poor? Thing?
Speaker 2:I was so happy. Yeah, I was so happy to be there. I bought my little concha ears With my concha ears, I think.
Speaker 1:Deanna has those. Does she, she has a whole bunch.
Speaker 2:You guys go often.
Speaker 1:Erica and them. That was their thing. Let's go in this shop and buy one. And Erica that's my friend's fiance. She buys one every time. She goes Like one set of ears, so she's very particular. I got to find the only one I'm going to buy this year, or whatever time she goes yeah. So Deanna had those conchas? Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:I loved them. Funny that you mentioned that. Yeah, I have my concha ears. I still have them, but growing up I mean mean I love disney I thought I was the little mermaid, okay okay, and so, being there, I was just like wow, I'm here, I'm here. I made it, mama, I made it, I'm here I'll tell you what you know.
Speaker 1:We were in our scooters, right and um, and I hate to keep talking about it, but we were in the scooters and and I was like, uh, don't, don't leave your backpack in there. And they're like, oh no, nobody's going to touch it.
Speaker 2:Nobody touches it. Wow.
Speaker 1:Deanna had left her big old backpack of stuff in there. No way and then Erica left her big old, her purse too, and nobody touches anything.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I know it's kind of weird.
Speaker 2:I know we're no pass on.
Speaker 1:I know it's kind of like you can't even do that. You can't do that at Sylvester Mall or anywhere. Wow.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And I was like are you sure? And they're like, yeah, let's go, and we go into the shop or go get something to eat. Leave our scooters out.
Speaker 2:It really is a magical place. It is.
Speaker 1:And then they told me. They said there's a lot of undercover people. But, I don't know what they look like. Of course they're undercover but, hopefully they are there, but nobody touches anything.
Speaker 2:Wow.
Speaker 1:I was totally shocked and I'm not I'm a trustworthy person, but you know. Oh yeah, those backpacks are expensive, and they were. You know, they're the fancy ones, you know.
Speaker 2:Like a chew. Yeah, look at you in Disneyland with a fancy backpack. No, not me, not me, oh, not you.
Speaker 1:No, the girls were having them and I was like, like Deanna had one, I was like you're going to leave that in the cart. Yeah, yeah, we're good, I was blown away.
Speaker 1:I was really blown away by that and she's amazing. She is an amazing mother and and and wife and um, we had a great time and we did some karaoke out there in la uh got one song in a piece, that's it. Everybody's singing out there. It's so weird, couldn't get, couldn't get back in the rotation. But uh, yeah, we'll invite you when we go see so how many rotations do you go ordinary?
Speaker 2:yeah?
Speaker 1:I'll. I'll do at least half an album and I'll just get like six songs. I'll do six songs throughout the night yeah, sometimes more because people stop signing up so I'll get quicker rotation. But yeah, I'm spoiled here in El Paso. But in LA one song I did the Promise by when in Rome it's an 80s song but yeah, invite me, I need it, okay, we'll invite you yeah, but did you want to talk more about the book or did you want to talk more about your, your, uh, how, who you follow?
Speaker 2:oh, so, like I was saying, I love to support authors. I love to you know um, because we're all going through it yeah, yeah, we're all going, you're all doing it yeah, and so I love to like diana. I'll share her stuff. I'll share some of my stuff, like some of my insights. I'll share stuff that, um, I've learned along the way. That way you don't have to make the same mistakes I've made.
Speaker 1:You know it's way to do it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I love sharing that information. Um, right now, I'm working with an author slash publisher, miguel briones, and I you mentioned him last time. Yeah, I mentioned him last time. He has um no culture publishing. I love make sure you give him a follow. It's miguel briones, right yeah, plug him, and so I love sharing his stuff everybody, whoever you know, if I make a connection with you, if I get to meet you, you're going to share this podcast.
Speaker 1:Yeah, of course but yeah, that's my, I love you love giving, I can tell that you're a giver. Is your husband a taker? Because if you're giving, he's got to take. He's a gift giver, he's got to receive it. Oh, he's a giver too.
Speaker 2:Yeah, he's a giver too.
Speaker 1:Yeah what are you guys going to do with each other? We've been togetheride middle school, can you believe?
Speaker 2:that's a long time. It's a long time. Wow, yeah, he's a great guy. I just met him tonight. Yeah, he's a great guy. And, by the way, what does he do? Let's plug him. Did they pay? Well, I'll pack my bags in six months, because that's when it was four and they paid it immediately. So we did that two years in a row for them. Uh, but she didn't know where it was.
