Your Business's Secret Weapon
What's the one practice missing from your business routine that could transform your results? In a world where entrepreneurs pride themselves on constant action, the most powerful growth tool might be the simplest: dedicated thinking time.
This episode explores how the most successful business owners differentiate themselves through strategic thinking rather than endless doing. While most entrepreneurs stay trapped on the hamster wheel—running at 100mph without looking up to see if they're heading toward success or off a cliff—those who thrive make deliberate space for reflection and problem-solving.
I share practical strategies for implementing effective thinking time, from scheduling it in your calendar to structuring it with focused bullet points. You'll discover why some of your best business ideas might come during a distraction-free walk rather than while frantically working, and how to use this mental space to address challenges, identify opportunities, and gain perspective on your business. Looking beyond your industry for solutions and involving trusted colleagues to refine your thinking can elevate this practice even further.
The true determinant of your business success isn't external factors like economic conditions or competition—it's your ability to think clearly and strategically. This simple yet powerful practice could be the missing element that transforms your business outcomes and helps you achieve the growth you've been working so hard to create. Ready to stop the constant doing and make space for the thinking that drives real results?

This could be one of the most important things you ever do in your business. Welcome to the Business Growth Blueprint Podcast. If you're an entrepreneur looking to elevate your business, you're in the right place. In today's fast-paced world, growing your business is more than just numbers. It's about making great marketing decisions to build meaningful connections, increase your revenue and keep your customers not just satisfied but truly happy, so you can live your life on your terms. Let's get started.
Speaker 1:Hello and welcome to today's episode. It's me, your host, mark Fitzgerald, and it's great to have you joining me here, so I'm hoping that you're getting out there. You're building your businesses up, whether that is in the property world, whether that's whatever sector you're in. At the moment. I have property businesses, but I also have training businesses as well, and I work with a lot of clients who have businesses in a lot of different sectors, so I see a vast array of different opportunities, but also I see a lot of people spinning their wheels, trying the same old things that they see everybody else doing, and a lot of this just boils down to something that I want to touch on today and really get everybody thinking about things thinking about things a little bit differently, but actually making time for thinking. You see, you can think about the big things, you can think about the bigger picture, you can have your vision, you can have your goals, you can know exactly what it is that you want to achieve and how you want to get there. But along the way, you need to take time to think. To think about the bigger picture, but also to think about the little stuff, the details, the things that might make a massive difference. As the old saying goes, small hinges can swing big doors. So it really, really is important that you start thinking, or at least setting some time out each and every week to have thinking time. Now, this could be the opportunity for you to go for a walk, but don't have the headphones on, don't be listening to anything podcasts, music Just switch off to it. Go for a walk on your own and just have some thinking time.
Speaker 1:A lot of the great ideas that business people and professionals have come up with have been when they've been having a shower, because, again, maybe it's just the running water and nothing else is on there and they have those aha moments. It can work for everybody, and it can work for everybody in different ways as well, but if you spend just a short amount of time in the company of highly successful entrepreneurs, you will quickly come to appreciate that they have a very different view of the world compared to the majority of business owners out there. And the truth is, most business owners unwittingly cling to struggle, they cling to mediocrity and, of course, they end up underachieving. And I don't want that for you, and of course you don't want that for yourself either, do you? Because they don't understand or appreciate how their existing belief systems and the thinking that they are triggering maintain them to be in a frustrated and, of course, miserable situation.
Speaker 1:Now, at the moment, your business might be flying high. You might be listening to this, just looking for some tips and tricks on marketing, on getting out there, on reaching more people, on continuing the growth of your business, or you could be struggling. You know the economy is tough at the moment. Are the outside influences really affecting your business? If they are, then this is definitely a time that you need to stop and you need to have some thinking time, but you need to structure it as well. Don't just stop, sit there for 10 minutes and say, well, I've thought about it, but nothing's really sprung to mind, nothing's really helped me Pencil some time in and write down or have on your notes, on your phone or something, maybe a couple of bullet points not a massive amount of bullet points, but maybe two or three bullet points of things that you want to think about.
Speaker 1:Do I want to think about my marketing material at the moment and how I'm reaching and getting clients or customers? Do I want to think about the new employee or the staff that I've got there and how I can maximize my workforce? Have those little bullet points there to trigger you to start thinking about specific things. So the next time you've got a problem and you're struggling with something you're not 100% sure which way to go with it or how to solve it, or it's just something that's really really annoying you Start writing it down, putting it somewhere, put it in your journal, put it in notes, as I say, on your phone, put it somewhere where you can just have a little look at it. And the next time maybe you want to have a think about things and get some ideas and maybe think how you can solve a problem or a situation.
Speaker 1:Take a long walk, take a half an hour 45 minute walk. It's good for you, get out there in the open. Doesn't matter if it's raining, just get out there. There's umbrellas, there's all sorts. We only get wet once, as they say, and a great friend of mine always says what are you worried about? You're not made of sugar, exactly right.
Speaker 1:Get yourself out there and look at your problems, look at your challenges and look at opportunities as well. Those are three great topics that I always like to have a little look at, and one of them I try to have a look at each and every week is opportunities. What opportunities am I missing? What opportunities are there in the current climate? What can I do? That's a little bit different to everybody else, but if outside thinking and another great thing if you're struggling for opportunities or your business is struggling slightly is to look at other industries. Look at what they're doing in the problem that you're having, because a lot of the time when other industries are marketing a certain way, are trying certain things, you can probably incorporate some of that into your business as well, but it's thinking time that can completely change what you're doing and how you're going about things.
Speaker 1:It's not a silver bullet, but I tell you what. It's something that is so, so powerful and so many people don't do it. I was one of those people for a very, very long time, but I actually do pencil in and schedule into my calendar thinking time. Yes, I want to sit down and I want to think about specific things so that I can try and get those solutions. And do I always get those solutions and come up with them? No, but I start to sow the seed and mark my words. Normally, within a day or two, I've come up with a solution to a problem or I've come up with an idea that I want to start trying.
Speaker 1:So if there's a problem in your business that needs addressing and, let's face it, there probably is if you're in business, then give yourself half an hour to think properly about that and see if you can address that situation, that challenge, have a really deep think about it and, of course, if you want to involve somebody else, then you'll get a better quality of thought because you can bounce ideas off of each other. I like to do this on my own, but if I have ideas, I like to share those ideas and I do find that half the time sharing something that you've come up with with somebody in the business, a partner, a business partner. Something like that gets it out into the open and you can really start to make sense of what you come up with. It really does give you that sense of is this a good idea or is this not a good idea? Don't sit around fretting about things. Just get out there and try and think a bit more.
Speaker 1:Some of the clients that I've worked with have incorporated this and they've seen some amazing results, particularly in growing their businesses. And they've seen some amazing results, particularly in growing their businesses, because they are so worked up, they are so busy on that hamster treadmill, as we like to say. They're going around, they're doing everything, they're running at 100 miles an hour all of the time, and that then means that they never have a chance to look up to maybe see what's happening around them and to make sure that they are going in the right direction, because there's no point in going in one direction. That's really really good, but it's going to take you off the edge of that cliff If you don't look up, if you don't have a look and turn left or right before you end up going off that cliff and crashing and burning. And of course, that can happen in business Right here right now. There's so many different things out there, but there's some great opportunities as well.
Speaker 1:We've got a lot of challenges with what's happening, but then there's always challenges, and you've got to remember that it's not the government, it's not AI, it's not your spouses, it's not your negative relatives or friends that are going to dictate if you are successful in business or not. What is going to dictate that? Well, you know it. You don't even need me to say it, but I'm going to say it anyway. I'm going to big you up here. It's you, it's what you put into your business, and I'm here with this podcast just to help point you in the right direction and give you a few ideas to have a little think about yourself.
Speaker 1:So are you going to schedule now some thinking time in? Are you really going to give yourself the opportunity to be able to solve those problems, to be able to pivot, to be able to look at what you're doing? I do hope so. If you need any other further help or assistance, then just feel free to reach out to me. I'm more than happy to have a chat with you, have a look at your business and see if we can come up with any ideas together. That is something that I enjoy doing. I love watching and helping people grow their businesses, getting out there and going from strength to strength.
Speaker 1:At the end of the day, the UK in itself if you are based in the UK here, I know I have some overseas listeners as well but the UK itself needs business owners, it needs entrepreneurs, it needs the smaller businesses as well to thrive, to help the economy and, of course, to help us all be able to continue and, of course, grow and thrive together. They'll do their best to stop us, but hey, nobody's going to stop us, are they? Because we're going to have a little think about this and if we need to change, we will change what we're doing. So enjoy this episode, if you feel free to share and like it and whatever else you like to do with these things, and please come and join me in the next episode very soon. Take care and bye for now.
