Exodus chapter 20, and we will be touching on covetousness. 00:02:13.156 --> 00:02:20.836 And essentially, I am inviting you all into the loving beatdown that I've been getting from the Lord as I've 00:03:13.097 I was thinking about just skipping to the end of the Ten Commandments, but I feel like sometimes it's good to just kind of go through all ten. 00:03:13.097 --> 00:03:15.420 I haven't done that with a group in a long time. 00:03:15.420 --> 00:03:18.844 So we're going to start in Exodus chapter 20, verse 1. 00:03:18.844 --> 00:03:21.969 Then God spoke all these words... 00:03:21.969 --> 00:03:27.020 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 00:03:27.020 --> 00:03:29.252 You shall have no other gods before me. 00:03:29.252 --> 00:03:36.524 You should not make yourself an idol or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 00:03:36.524 --> 00:03:40.550 You should not worship them or serve them for I the Lord your God am a jealous God. 00:03:40.550 --> 00:03:50.484 Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children on the third and fourth generations of those who 00:04:51.910 --> 00:04:59.345 Now, as we go through these commandments, there are essentially seven that focus on you shall not. 00:04:59.345 --> 00:05:00.935 whatever it is, right? 00:05:00.935 --> 00:05:04.877 And most of them are directly connected to an action. 00:05:04.877 --> 00:05:07.600 You shall not do this thing, right? 00:05:07.600 --> 00:05:09.963 So from the first one, you shall not make an idol. 00:05:09.963 --> 00:05:13.605 Don't get gold and silver and wood and craft this thing to worship. 00:05:13.605 --> 00:05:17.488 You shall not take the Lord's name in vain. 00:05:17.488 --> 00:05:21.612 You will not say his name in connection to things that aren't actually connected to him. 00:05:21.612 --> 00:05:26.617 Not working on the Sabbath, not committing murder, not committing adultery. 00:05:26.617 --> 00:05:28.738 These are all very clear actions. 00:05:28.738 --> 00:05:30.379 Don't do this thing. 00:05:30.379 --> 00:05:33.322 And then we get to 10. 00:05:33.322 --> 00:05:36.665 You shall not covet. 00:05:36.665 --> 00:05:40.209 And that isn't about an action. 00:05:40.209 --> 00:05:42.451 That's about the state of your heart. 00:05:42.451 --> 00:05:50.720 Covet, the root word used for that in the scripture here, is used in a few different places throughout the scriptures. 00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:54.423 And it can be used to talk about something that's pleasing. 00:05:54.423 --> 00:05:56.365 It can be used to talk about something that's delightful. 00:05:56.365 --> 00:06:01.307 It can also be used to talk about something that someone desires, right? 00:06:01.307 --> 00:06:11.026 And so one of the easiest ways to define, I think, covetousness from a biblical perspective is having a strong desire for something that belongs to someone else. 00:06:11.026 --> 00:06:15.454 Or put another way, that doesn't belong to you. 00:06:15.454 --> 00:06:22.583 So I don't know of, I feel like I don't hear a lot about covetousness, you know, in Christian circles a lot. 00:06:22.583 --> 00:06:27.052 I don't know if I've ever heard like a sermon or extended message on it. 00:06:27.052 --> 00:06:37.072 But it's incredibly important that we're aware of it and when it creeps up in our hearts because it is wildly deceptive and incredibly damaging. 00:06:37.072 --> 00:06:48.656 And If I had no other evidence to support that statement, I think this fact is enough that covetousness is the means by which sin entered into mankind. 00:06:48.656 --> 00:06:50.879 Like that's how it got started. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:58.146 Again, that word that's used for covet in the Hebrew is used in a few different places to mean a few different things. 00:06:58.146 --> 00:07:21.245 And the first place it's ever used is Genesis chapter two, verse nine, which says out of the ground, And so the word pleasing there is that same word that is used to speak to covetousness. 00:07:21.245 --> 00:07:27.853 The second place that it's used is chapter 3 in Genesis, verse 6. 00:07:27.853 --> 00:07:42.259 which says, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate and she gave also to her husband with her and he ate. 00:07:42.259 --> 00:07:50.026 And so that word desirable that's used, again, the same root word that's used for covetousness. 00:07:50.026 --> 00:07:57.093 And so there is this element of covetousness that is there in the very first sin in mankind. 00:07:57.093 --> 00:08:06.887 And what covetousness does, I believe, is give us a twisted approach to the good provision of God. 00:08:06.887 --> 00:08:11.375 Every tree in the garden, every single one is desirable and pleasing. 00:08:11.375 --> 00:08:12.175 All of them are. 00:08:12.175 --> 00:08:16.723 And Adam and Eve have access to all of them, including like the tree. 00:08:16.723 --> 00:08:22.173 I remember reading this at one point and looking like they actually had access to the tree of life. 00:08:22.173 --> 00:08:25.177 Like they could have eaten from that, but they didn't. 00:08:25.177 --> 00:08:29.059 They wanted the one thing that God said was off limits. 00:08:29.059 --> 00:08:35.049 And so again, covetousness will present this and will create this twisted approach to the good provision of God. 00:08:35.049 --> 00:08:43.344 It will put us in a place where we feel like the good things that he's given us and surrounded us with, for whatever reason, actually aren't enough. 00:08:43.344 --> 00:08:45.888 And he hasn't done enough. 00:08:45.888 --> 00:08:49.214 And like we're actually lacking something. 00:08:49.214 --> 00:08:57.259 but it will also have us focusing on some of the things we perceive as good that he hasn't provided and feel like, well, I should have that. 00:08:57.259 --> 00:08:58.441 Like I deserve to have that. 00:08:58.441 --> 00:08:59.942 I should want those things. 00:08:59.942 --> 00:09:14.721 And so I think it's helpful to notice that what Eve actually wanted, when it talks about why she wanted to eat the fruit, none of it was actually bad. 00:09:14.721 --> 00:09:20.636 Like the tree itself, when God made all the trees, day three. 00:09:20.636 --> 00:09:24.884 And so everything that he made, he called good. 00:09:24.884 --> 00:09:26.426 He made the tree. 00:09:26.426 --> 00:09:29.210 So the tree itself was good. 00:09:29.210 --> 00:09:33.015 The desire to be wise, like wisdom is a good thing. 00:09:33.015 --> 00:09:35.019 There's plenty of scripture about how we should be wise. 00:09:35.019 --> 00:09:37.501 So wisdom is faith value, is good. 00:09:37.501 --> 00:09:50.264 And even like the idea of wanting to be or become like God, as Christians, our entire lives are given over to wanting to be more and more like Jesus. 00:09:50.264 --> 00:09:51.609 Like that is our goal. 00:09:51.609 --> 00:09:56.528 And so again, just on face value, like the idea of becoming like and more like God. 00:09:56.528 --> 00:10:00.441 It actually could be a good thing, should be a good thing. 00:10:00.441 --> 00:10:04.926 And so the tree was good, wisdom's good, being more like God is good. 00:10:04.926 --> 00:10:09.831 What wasn't good was reaching out for anything in a way that God has not said is for you. 00:10:09.831 --> 00:10:20.522 And so just the fact that the things were good were not enough to make it okay for the methods that they choose to reach out for them. 00:10:20.522 --> 00:10:30.572 And so I think it's important to notice that because Not everything that is good or every method that appears good is for you, right? 00:10:30.572 --> 00:10:31.293 It's just not. 00:10:31.293 --> 00:10:41.129 And we can sometimes have this opinion that, well, if God has done good things for me in other places, well, surely he wants me to have this good thing so I can just desire it and long for it and go after it. 00:10:41.129 --> 00:10:45.604 And not everything that's good is necessarily inherently for you. 00:10:45.604 --> 00:10:58.504 There's this perspective that sometimes people have that even the world, like everything that's been created, the world itself and creation was created for mankind because the conditions are so perfect and God's been all this time getting the world perfect for us and then brought us here. 00:10:58.504 --> 00:11:04.573 But the world and everything in it was made for him. 00:11:04.573 --> 00:11:06.635 He's the starting point. 00:11:06.635 --> 00:11:11.522 Colossians 1.6 says that everything was made by him, through him, and for him. 00:11:11.522 --> 00:11:16.208 And so nothing is inherently ours. 00:11:16.208 --> 00:11:19.013 Nothing is inherently just for me. 00:11:19.013 --> 00:11:20.394 It's all for him. 00:11:20.394 --> 00:11:25.682 The reason that's important is because the thought that anything is inherently mine. 00:11:25.682 --> 00:11:32.390 is the soil where the seeds of covetousness can start to grow. 00:11:32.390 --> 00:11:39.837 Because it's this short jump from, okay, well, I have things that are mine, that inherently belong to me, that are inherently for me. 00:11:39.837 --> 00:11:49.005 And so then if I see something else that's similar to some of those things, I'm like, well, it makes sense that those things could or even should be mine as well. 00:11:49.005 --> 00:11:55.331 And so you have Eve, who is surrounded by all of these trees that are good for food and pleasing to the sight. 00:11:55.331 --> 00:11:56.993 She sees She's another one. 00:11:56.993 --> 00:12:00.216 And scripture says, why did she eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? 00:12:00.216 --> 00:12:01.717 Because it was good. 00:12:01.717 --> 00:12:02.778 She saw it was good for food. 00:12:02.778 --> 00:12:04.260 It was pleasing to the sight. 00:12:04.260 --> 00:12:09.446 But it had this little extra component of being able to make one wise. 00:12:09.446 --> 00:12:16.374 And so because it matched what she was used to saying is mine, she reaches out for this thing. 00:12:16.374 --> 00:12:19.136 And so... 00:12:19.136 --> 00:12:26.267 The desire to have good things is obviously good and makes sense. 00:12:26.267 --> 00:12:30.974 And we should long after the things, the good things that God has said are for us. 00:12:30.974 --> 00:12:45.793 But covetousness will slide in and kind of present itself differently so that when we are actually longing after something that somebody else has that God hasn't said is for us, we don't necessarily view it as bad. 00:12:45.793 --> 00:12:49.739 And so there are a couple of masks that covetousness can wear. 00:12:49.739 --> 00:12:51.581 I think one of them is admiration. 00:12:51.581 --> 00:12:55.842 And so I can be in a place where I'm like, well, I don't covet that thing. 00:12:55.842 --> 00:12:58.326 I don't have this strong desire for that thing that somebody has. 00:12:58.326 --> 00:12:59.769 I just admire it. 00:12:59.769 --> 00:13:03.254 I don't covet my neighbor's house or my neighbor's car or whatever. 00:13:03.254 --> 00:13:04.975 I just admire it. 00:13:04.975 --> 00:13:12.187 But there is this line that can be crossed when we step from admiration into covetousness. 00:13:12.187 --> 00:13:19.783 If I go to a museum, And I go walk through and enjoy the art and all the paintings and sculptures and things. 00:13:19.783 --> 00:13:22.404 It's something me and my wife have done a lot in the past. 00:13:22.404 --> 00:13:23.787 I enjoy it. 00:13:23.787 --> 00:13:26.950 I enjoy going to see everything and admiring what's there. 00:13:26.950 --> 00:13:28.892 And then when I leave, I leave. 00:13:28.892 --> 00:13:29.611 I'm like, good. 00:13:29.611 --> 00:13:35.118 I don't have a desire to have those things for myself or possess those things for myself. 00:13:35.118 --> 00:13:38.802 Personally, if I go to Foot Locker... 00:13:38.802 --> 00:13:50.673 There's a line that the admiration crosses when I'm like, oh yeah, I'm just going to see what's there. 00:13:50.673 --> 00:13:51.695 I'm just going to see what's new. 00:13:51.695 --> 00:13:55.682 And then I'm leaving the store and my wife is like, why do you have a bag in your hand? 00:13:55.682 --> 00:14:01.993 And so there's this line that goes from, oh, I'm just admiring what's there to... 00:14:01.993 --> 00:14:06.869 I'm starting to have really a desire to possess this thing for myself. 00:14:06.869 --> 00:14:11.780 And I was speaking to someone after the first service, and he was basically like, you know, everybody has their footlocker. 00:14:11.780 --> 00:14:16.332 Like, whatever that thing is for you, like, and we have to know it really takes... 00:14:16.332 --> 00:14:19.022 Honesty with ourselves before the Lord. 00:14:19.022 --> 00:14:34.239 Okay, what's that line between this thing is just something I admire, it's just a hobby, it's just whatever, and going to, no, this is becoming something that is really stirring my heart to long for something that actually isn't mine or feel like I need some additional thing added, right? 00:14:34.239 --> 00:14:34.620 Like I... 00:14:34.620 --> 00:14:37.991 Yeah, Foot Locker's my thing. 00:14:37.991 --> 00:14:47.081 My wife has a list of, I don't know, 120 things on Amazon that is just like, she's just admiring, but it's like, cool. 00:14:47.081 --> 00:14:50.083 But every other week, there's a new box here. 00:14:50.083 --> 00:14:56.009 But again, it's that reality of like, what's that line for you? 00:14:56.009 --> 00:14:57.491 What's that line for us, right? 00:14:57.491 --> 00:15:03.197 Because we don't want to be in this place of not being able to... 00:15:03.197 --> 00:15:08.806 Again, if covetousness twists our approach to the good provision of God, right? 00:15:08.806 --> 00:15:17.879 I don't want to be in this place where I am feeling like everything that he's given me already isn't adequate or like he himself isn't adequate, right? 00:15:17.879 --> 00:15:20.443 And so I need some new thing to add on to it. 00:15:20.443 --> 00:15:24.291 So, but again, covetousness will come under the kind of the guise of admiration sometimes. 00:15:24.291 --> 00:15:30.159 The other thing that I think sometimes it'll mask itself is inspiration, right? 00:15:30.159 --> 00:15:32.316 So I'm not coveting what I see. 00:15:32.316 --> 00:15:34.642 I don't covet something I see my neighbor have. 00:15:34.642 --> 00:15:36.886 I don't covet something that I'm seeing on social media. 00:15:36.886 --> 00:15:42.923 I don't covet what successful people have, but I'm inspired to kind of go after those things myself. 00:15:42.923 --> 00:15:51.563 And again, There's this deceptive thing about it because you think, okay, well, if you covet what someone has, that means you want that specific thing. 00:15:51.563 --> 00:15:52.264 I want to take that. 00:15:52.264 --> 00:15:53.525 I want that for myself. 00:15:53.525 --> 00:16:00.611 But there are a couple of places in Scripture where coveting is not necessarily associated with removing something from somebody else. 00:16:00.611 --> 00:16:02.453 It really has to do with what's in your heart. 00:16:02.453 --> 00:16:13.904 With Eve herself, right, when she covets the– or she has this desire to be wise and this desire to be more like God, eating the fruit, even though God does actually say, like, they have what come like us. 00:16:13.904 --> 00:16:19.345 It didn't make God any less wise and it didn't make God any less God, right? 00:16:19.345 --> 00:16:21.147 So it didn't actually take anything from him. 00:16:21.147 --> 00:16:32.475 There's a situation in Joshua chapter seven when the Israelites have conquered Jericho and God's like, everything that's there, all the gold, silver, everything that was left, destroy it. 00:16:32.475 --> 00:16:33.397 Don't take any of it. 00:16:33.397 --> 00:16:40.903 And there's someone, Achan, and the scripture literally says in chapter seven, verse 21, that he coveted. 00:16:40.903 --> 00:16:46.708 And so he took gold he wasn't supposed to take, took silver he wasn't supposed to take, took this robe he wasn't supposed to take, Because he coveted it. 00:16:46.708 --> 00:16:50.193 Again, he didn't remove it from any, it wasn't going to anybody. 00:16:50.193 --> 00:16:51.855 Everything was, it was going to be destroyed. 00:16:51.855 --> 00:16:56.663 But again, it wasn't about just, oh, this is coming from your neighbor or coming from somebody else. 00:16:56.663 --> 00:16:59.287 It's about what is actually going on in your heart. 00:16:59.287 --> 00:17:09.240 And so just because I'm inspired to go get something for myself doesn't mean that that might not be coming from a place of coveting. 00:17:09.240 --> 00:17:24.000 And so the questions that we can ask ourself Because there is a theme between Adam and Eve and Achan and Joshua that the thing that they were coveting, they wanted it for themselves. 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:26.263 They wanted to be wise. 00:17:26.263 --> 00:17:27.305 They wanted to be like God. 00:17:27.305 --> 00:17:28.606 Achan wanted to have the gold. 00:17:28.606 --> 00:17:30.148 It was about them. 00:17:30.148 --> 00:17:39.162 And so one of the questions we can ask ourselves is, okay, if I'm inspired to go after something because of something I've seen around me, why am I inspired to do it? 00:17:39.162 --> 00:17:43.240 What is the end result of me achieving and getting whatever that thing is? 00:17:43.240 --> 00:17:49.821 Is it about me and possibly my little circle around me or is it actually about other people? 00:17:49.821 --> 00:17:58.732 Is this actually going to be a benefit to someone who Is it going to benefit somebody else in a way that actually has nothing to do with me? 00:17:58.732 --> 00:18:01.277 Is that the reason I'm inspired to go after this? 00:18:01.277 --> 00:18:09.868 Or is that inspiration coming from this place of, yeah, I really want what I've seen this person have or that person have or what I feel like I'm missing out on? 00:18:09.868 --> 00:18:12.913 And so we have to ask ourselves, I think, that question. 00:18:12.913 --> 00:18:17.179 Is it about me? 00:18:17.179 --> 00:18:20.943 And things being about us is really... 00:18:20.943 --> 00:18:37.453 what keeps covetousness going self-centeredness is the battery that keeps covetousness running, if we are constantly thinking about our own desires and our own needs and how do I get what I need to get? 00:18:37.453 --> 00:18:39.757 How do I satisfy what I'm looking for? 00:18:39.757 --> 00:18:41.400 How do I achieve what I'm trying to achieve? 00:18:41.400 --> 00:18:46.788 If we're constantly looking at that, it becomes very easy to see the world around us through that lens. 00:18:46.788 --> 00:18:55.541 It's easy to see whatever is around me as how can that help satisfy the desires and the needs that I feel like I have. 00:18:55.541 --> 00:19:06.269 And what can make that worse, honestly, is when we just have the ability to get it. 00:19:06.269 --> 00:19:10.013 Where we don't actually have to ask the question. 00:19:10.013 --> 00:19:13.979 Like some people might be in a place, and covetousness can affect anybody, right? 00:19:13.979 --> 00:19:17.262 But some people are in a place where like, man, I really, really desire that thing. 00:19:17.262 --> 00:19:18.605 I can't get it though. 00:19:18.605 --> 00:19:21.808 Like I could go buy those shoes and then I can't pay rent or whatever. 00:19:21.808 --> 00:19:24.070 Like, you know, I can't do it. 00:19:24.070 --> 00:19:26.574 And so you still need to deal with what's in your heart. 00:19:26.574 --> 00:19:29.377 But it gets a little... 00:19:29.377 --> 00:20:00.337 more difficult when like I actually can just get whatever the thing is that I'm longing after with no difficulty whatsoever because I don't often we won't spend time thinking about should I why do I want this it's just hey I want it I can get it I'll go get it and we never actually all you know address the issue of where is this coming from And so the question isn't that we should be asking, we shouldn't be necessarily, will having this or getting this affect me in some negative way? 00:20:00.337 --> 00:20:04.263 The question is, why do I long after this thing? 00:20:04.263 --> 00:20:09.992 Why am I longing to have something that isn't mine, that belongs to someone else? 00:20:09.992 --> 00:20:16.824 It's interesting that the Ten Commandments start with, you shall have no other gods, right? 00:20:16.824 --> 00:20:20.650 And then end with, you shall not covet. 00:20:20.650 --> 00:20:23.540 because they seem to be connected, actually. 00:20:23.540 --> 00:20:38.199 Colossians chapter three, verse five says, therefore, consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 00:20:38.199 --> 00:20:48.411 The word that's used for greed here, again, this is in the Greek, but the word that's used for greed there is also used for covetousness. 00:20:48.411 --> 00:20:53.278 In fact, depending on what translation you're reading, Colossians 3.5, that's what it will actually say. 00:20:53.278 --> 00:20:57.505 It will say covetousness amounts to idolatry. 00:20:57.505 --> 00:21:01.050 And here is the thing about idols. 00:21:01.050 --> 00:21:05.518 They don't have to take up that much space in your life. 00:21:05.518 --> 00:21:19.124 There is a account in Genesis when Jacob is taking his family and they're leaving and Rachel steals the household gods from her father's house. 00:21:19.124 --> 00:21:23.372 And they're small enough for her to put in the saddlebag that's on the camel. 00:21:23.372 --> 00:21:25.955 And when her father comes to look for them, he can't even find them. 00:21:25.955 --> 00:21:31.444 And so the fact that they were small didn't make it any less of an idol. 00:21:31.444 --> 00:21:43.040 The things that we covet are The things that we long after that someone else has that doesn't belong to us, they can easily become idols. 00:21:43.040 --> 00:21:48.210 And again, it doesn't matter if it takes up a lot of space in your life or a small amount of space in your life. accumulating this thing, or going after this thing, and maybe my whole life isn't surrounded around that, but it's something I keep getting drawn back to, keep being made to feel like I don't have question becomes, how do I deal with what's going on in my heart, right? 00:23:43.872 --> 00:23:58.602 And I think we gotta be honest and go before the Lord and let him expose that covetousness and that idolatry that can be in us But then I think the practical response to it that we can take is to be outward focused. 00:23:58.602 --> 00:24:15.689 Because if covetousness is empowered by how focused on my own desires and needs I can be, then the exact opposite of that is being more focused on the needs and desires of other people. 00:24:15.689 --> 00:24:25.503 And saying, how do I now put that as something that's more important for me to focus on on a regular basis than just me fulfilling the desires of myself in my own flesh? 00:24:25.503 --> 00:24:39.565 If most of us created a ratio and looked at even our last week and said, okay, how much time, money, and thought did I put towards fulfilling my own needs and desires? 00:24:39.565 --> 00:24:43.970 versus how much of that I put towards somebody else. 00:24:43.970 --> 00:24:48.976 Again, not even necessarily in my immediate circle, but even outside of my immediate circle. 00:24:48.976 --> 00:25:01.528 How much time, energy, money have I put towards somebody else experiencing the good provision of God and having their needs and desires met? 00:25:01.528 --> 00:25:09.117 I would imagine that for most of us, that ratio is here where you are clearly supporting with your finances. 00:25:34.441 --> 00:25:46.570 But often we can sometimes get to a place where we just kind of like write a check or make a donation and it doesn't take that much thought and it doesn't take that much effort. 00:25:46.570 --> 00:25:51.376 And so we kind of use that as the justification to go on back to our covetous ways. 00:25:51.376 --> focus on me again. 00:26:00.568 --> 00:26:17.861 And so actually incorporating time and energy and effort into helping someone outside of ourselves experience the good provision of God and receive the needs and desires they have is an important part of the equation. 00:26:17.861 --> 00:26:31.276 When we actually say, hey, I'm going to make my life, I'm going to carve out time regularly, like I want this to be a thing that I do on a regular basis to take, to give myself over to helping somebody else have what they need. 00:26:31.276 --> 00:26:38.884 That is gonna be one of the most practical ways that we can deal with the covetousness that abides in our hearts. 00:26:38.884 --> 00:26:47.314 And it actually leads us to achieving what Eve and Adam were trying to achieve when they ate the fruit, people, as we serve God, we're not going to be people who are just focused on our own needs and our own desires and the things we're longing after, but we are going to set ourselves aside to really actually will walk in that selflessness you realize how limited the impact of some of those things that we're coveting actually, how limited the impact it can have on your satisfaction. 00:28:29.080
