Though our country was still young, it was a time leading up to the Civil War in the United States. 00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:31.440 But the leaders of NBC were united by a common purpose. 00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:38.719 They were unified about what they were fighting against, and they were also unified about what they were fighting for. 00:00:39.359 --> 00:00:42.000 And so our church was born. 00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:48.240 The scriptures tell us that the gospel is a foolish idea, a scandal. 00:00:48.479 --> 00:01:01.759 But in this delusion, we embraced a vision of putting an outpost for 00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:27.840 And under the current leadership of this church, we will once again take on the task of envisioning a new future, driven by a vision of a future as a gospel-preaching 00:07:19.680 And we'll see three things in our passage today. 00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:24.639 We're gonna look at the messengers, and then we're gonna look at the message, and then we're gonna look at greeting in verses one and two. 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:46.720 The letter starts like this Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my beloved child. 00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:53.039 Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:55.519 Pretty standard Pauline introduction. 00:08:55.679 --> 00:08:58.559 This letter was written by the Apostle Paul. 00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:04.399 Paul writes this letter to someone who was very precious to him, to Timothy, his beloved child. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:08.399 Why does Paul refer to Timothy as his beloved child here? 00:09:08.559 --> 00:09:17.679 The reason is because Timothy was a convert of the Apostle Paul at his first missionary journey that he took in Lystra, where Timothy was from. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:23.519 So here, Paul, I want you to see is not writing to a co-worker, he's writing to his spiritual son. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:32.559 Now, all three pastoral epistles, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, mention Timothy, and they mention a kinship that Timothy had with Paul. 00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:35.840 In 1 Timothy, he's called his true child in the faith. 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:41.759 Here he's called his beloved child, and in Titus 1:4, he's called his genuine child in a common faith. 00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:51.039 All have a personal touch, but 2 Timothy is far more heartfelt and far more personal than any other letter that the Apostle Paul writes. 00:09:51.200 --> 00:09:59.840 In fact, this letter contains 14 verses of introspective and autobiographical comments in its conclusion of chapter 4. 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:01.600 What's the setting? 00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:03.519 Where did all of this take place? 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:09.759 Well, the recipient, Timothy, is a pastor at the church at Ephesus. 00:10:10.080 --> 00:10:14.320 He's serving as the pastor there, and he has been serving as the pastor there for many years. 00:10:14.480 --> 00:10:17.279 We learned about this in 1 Timothy chapter 1. 00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:25.840 Paul said, as I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus, so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:28.399 So Timothy is remaining at Ephesus. 00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:29.919 He's ministering there. 00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:33.840 We have no evidence to think that the situation has changed whatsoever. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.159 He's still pastoring at Ephesus. 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:37.840 That's where Timothy is. 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:38.960 Where is Paul? 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:40.559 Where is Paul writing from? 00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:44.720 Well, Paul is writing from the capital of the Roman Empire. 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.440 Look at 2 Timothy 1, 16 and 17. 00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:54.720 It says, May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onecephorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains. 00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:59.039 But when he arrived in Rome, he searched for me earnestly and found me. 00:10:59.200 --> 00:11:04.960 So what we learn here is the geographical location of Paul as he's writing this particular letter. 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:07.519 And we also learn about his condition, don't we? 00:11:07.679 --> 00:11:08.799 He's in chains. 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:11.360 He is a prisoner. 00:11:11.840 --> 00:11:22.639 Again, we see this in verse 8, where Paul says, Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in the suffering for the gospel by the power of God. 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:27.200 So Paul is in Rome and he is a prisoner. 00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:30.639 Paul is now an accused criminal. 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:39.120 And there is a negative stigma in their day, as in our day as well, in terms of anyone being in prison. 00:11:39.200 --> 00:11:44.000 And so, because of that negative stigma, there's going to be a great temptation for Timothy here. 00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:49.039 And the great temptation is for Timothy to be ashamed of the Apostle Paul. 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.080 And we'll talk a lot more about that next week. 00:11:52.399 --> 00:12:02.879 For some further context, back in 1 Timothy chapter 3, Paul had given some important instructions to Timothy, and it appears that the context is very different. 00:12:03.039 --> 00:12:05.679 Look how he writes back in 1 Timothy chapter 3. 00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:08.240 Paul says, This, I hope to come to you soon. 00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:13.600 But I'm writing these things to you so that if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God. 00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:17.360 Notice as he writes 1 Timothy, Paul is not in prison here. 00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:19.279 He's not constrained whatsoever. 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:21.200 He hopes to come and visit Timothy. 00:12:21.360 --> 00:12:22.879 He hopes to come soon. 00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:26.559 Not the case as he writes 2 Timothy. 00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:28.559 He's not hoping that he will come. 00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:32.879 In fact, he's expecting that this imprisonment will end in death. 00:12:33.840 --> 00:12:38.240 Skip over to the ending in chapter 4, where Paul writes this. 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:41.120 He says, Luke alone is with me. 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:46.399 Get Mark and bring him with you, for he's very useful to me for ministry. 00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:49.039 Tychicus, I've sent to Ephesus. 00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:56.639 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpis at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 00:12:57.120 --> 00:13:01.279 Notice here, Paul is expecting Timothy to come. 00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:04.799 And Tichochus is evidently being sent. 00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:21.759 And the likely reason that Timothy is being sent, uh I'm sorry, the likely reason that that I'm getting my name's mixed up, that Tychicus is being sent over to Ephesus is to replace Timothy as the pastor at Ephesus so that Timothy can leave and go be with Paul. 00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:26.960 Notice it looks like Paul has recently been visiting Troas, if you see that. 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:34.080 His cloak was left there, along with some parchments that wouldn't have been left there unless he had recently been there. 00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:36.879 Now I want you to think about this for a second. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:42.320 Paul is the most important Christian in the whole world. 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.039 And this guy has one cloak. 00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:50.159 Why? 00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:53.519 Why wouldn't he just say, Go buy me a cloak? 00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:57.759 The reason is because he's poor. 00:13:59.200 --> 00:14:00.000 Think about that. 00:14:00.159 --> 00:14:02.320 This is the apostle Paul. 00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:07.200 Paul standing in the church, even here, is awesome. 00:14:08.159 --> 00:14:10.240 And yet he's nobody. 00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:14.399 So he says, I have this important cloak. 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:16.639 I left it over in Troaz. 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:18.240 It keeps me warm. 00:14:18.480 --> 00:14:20.799 I didn't realize I'd be spending the winter over here. 00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:23.519 When you come, can you just bring the cloak? 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:29.440 You can still visit the dungeon where they kept Paul if you go to Rome today. 00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:31.600 It's the Mamertine prison. 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:37.919 It's a dark and dank and cold, confined Roman jail cell. 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:39.519 Look at that. 00:14:40.480 --> 00:14:45.200 That place is where he was confined, where they kept him. 00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:55.440 And that place is where he writes one of the most wonderful, personal, heartfelt, warm books of the Bible. 00:14:56.240 --> 00:14:58.720 This is Paul's second imprisonment. 00:14:58.879 --> 00:15:01.519 After the first imprisonment, he had got out. 00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:08.720 But now, for a second time, he's back in prison, and the timeline here is around 67 AD. 00:15:09.279 --> 00:15:12.159 And this time it's his last time. 00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:20.480 In fact, he knows this, which is why he says in verse 6 of chapter 4, for I am already being poured out like a drink offering. 00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:23.360 And the time for my departure is near. 00:15:23.600 --> 00:15:25.279 I have fought the good fight. 00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:34.960 Not maybe it's coming. 00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:36.159 No, it's here. 00:15:36.559 --> 00:15:38.639 That word departure there is fascinating. 00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:40.000 It means to untie. 00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:46.480 It was used to untie a ship and set the ship out on its voyage. 00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:50.000 This is the way Paul views death. 00:15:51.039 --> 00:15:57.360 Not as the end, but as being untied and being set out on a voyage. 00:15:57.519 --> 00:15:59.039 This is what he's taught us elsewhere, right? 00:15:59.120 --> 00:16:03.039 In Philippians chapter 1, he says, if I stay here and live, that's good. 00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:04.320 Like let's say get to work. 00:16:04.399 --> 00:16:06.799 But if I die, that's actually better. 00:16:07.279 --> 00:16:10.879 For to me, to depart and be with Christ is better by far. 00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:14.399 To live is Christ, but to die is gain. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:19.279 So here he says, I've I've fought the good fight, I've kept the faith. 00:16:19.519 --> 00:16:23.759 What this letter is, is it's like the last will and testament of the Apostle Paul. 00:16:24.720 --> 00:16:26.159 So let's review. 00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:34.960 The situation here as we enter into this study is what we find is that Paul is beginning a very authoritative and yet heartfelt letter. 00:16:35.600 --> 00:16:40.159 And what we also learn is that Timothy is supposed to come and see Paul. 00:16:40.480 --> 00:16:42.799 Antichicus is going to take his place. 00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:44.879 And Paul wants him to come. 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:47.919 He says, I want my cloak and I want my books. 00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:48.799 Why? 00:16:49.120 --> 00:16:54.320 So I can do ministry here while I can, while I'm still alive. 00:16:54.480 --> 00:16:56.639 So that's the messengers. 00:16:57.279 --> 00:16:59.120 And now let's talk about the message. 00:16:59.440 --> 00:17:00.960 For this part, I want to look at two things. 00:17:01.039 --> 00:17:04.559 I want to look at the source of the message and then the structure of the message. 00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:06.319 First, the source of the message. 00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:07.519 Look again at verse one. 00:17:07.920 --> 00:17:10.799 Paul refers to himself as an apostle. 00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:13.839 That was a term that carried with it a great deal of authority. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:16.799 The word apostle just simply means one who is sent. 00:17:17.599 --> 00:17:20.960 Like the Greek term apostelo means to send. 00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:29.920 They had these ships that they called apostelic ships, where they would carry cargo and take the cargo from one place to the next place. 00:17:30.079 --> 00:17:32.480 They were sent on these apostolic ships. 00:17:32.640 --> 00:17:33.680 Paul is an apostle. 00:17:33.759 --> 00:17:37.839 He's been sent to carry the good news of the gospel from one place to the next. 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:39.680 He is like one of those ships. 00:17:39.920 --> 00:17:44.799 And Paul says, I'm an apostle according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus. 00:17:44.880 --> 00:17:53.759 And that phrase to begin this letter is supposed to be striking to us, considering that he's writing from prison, because Rome sees him as a condemned prisoner. 00:17:53.920 --> 00:17:56.720 Rome sees him as someone who's a dead man walking. 00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:02.160 Rome sees him as someone who is awaiting his own demise, who is waiting for his own death. 00:18:02.319 --> 00:18:03.920 But Paul does not see it that way. 00:18:04.079 --> 00:18:08.240 Paul sees himself as an heir to the promise of eternal life. 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:25.759 This is important because later in the letter he will exhort Timothy to endure suffering with the hope of eternity on the horizon, appealing to his own situation and his own authority to give that exhortation some special weight. 00:18:25.920 --> 00:18:30.400 So the gospel promises life even when this world threatens death. 00:18:30.960 --> 00:18:33.599 That is the hope that the early church hung on to. 00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:36.079 That is the hope that turned this world upside down. 00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:39.119 The first century church did not know about that hope. 00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:41.039 They did not understand the Christians. 00:18:43.359 --> 00:18:45.839 But yet, this is the kind of hope that they had. 00:18:46.079 --> 00:18:47.759 And this is what Paul is testifying here. 00:18:47.839 --> 00:18:50.799 Notice also it says, Paul is an apostle by the will of God. 00:18:51.039 --> 00:18:51.680 See that? 00:18:52.400 --> 00:18:56.000 What that means is that Paul did not self-appoint himself. 00:18:56.400 --> 00:19:05.119 Paul, formerly known as Saul, was basically uh, you know, a Jewish Pharisee that was turned into a terrorist that was killing the early Christians. 00:19:05.440 --> 00:19:08.640 In the book of Acts, that's where we first meet him, named Saul. 00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:11.839 He's this guy that's going around wreaking havoc on the early church. 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:13.359 Everybody's terrified him. 00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:24.480 And God like knocks him off of his horse in Acts chapter 9 on the road to Damascus and says, I'm going to use you to be my witness to the Gentiles. 00:19:25.359 --> 00:19:35.039 To try to illustrate this, I just want to get you to see that Saul starts out as one man and he ends up like a totally different man. 00:19:35.519 --> 00:19:42.079 And the image I want to
